What “top-rated” means in these 2025 picks
Different publications used different selection criteria, so their labels should not be read as a shared scorecard. TODAY’s Shop TODAY roundup, updated August 12, 2025, says its editors interviewed 11 dermatologists about ingredients and routine practices, asked dermatologists and editors for product favorites, and reviewed bestselling products with mostly positive verified customer reviews. Vogue’s 2025 routine and moisturizer guides provide category recommendations and expert framing. None of these lists establishes a clinical winner across the market, and the named products have not been shown here in an independent head-to-head trial.

How to choose for your concern and routine
For fine lines or uneven tone
A retinoid may be worth considering if those are your concerns. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says retinoids can help with mild fine lines and wrinkles and mild pigmentation irregularities, as well as mild acne. It describes increased surface-cell turnover and collagen stimulation as relevant effects, while noting that irritation can occur. For dryness or a simpler routine
Choose a moisturizer for how your skin feels and what texture you will use. Vogue’s guide says dry skin may suit richer emollient creams, while oily skin may prefer lightweight, non-comedogenic or gel formulations. A moisturizer’s job in this shortlist is hydration; it is not interchangeable with a retinoid treatment or sunscreen.
For daily UV protection
Consider sunscreen by its label, feel on your skin and how practical it is to reapply. TODAY’s roundup emphasizes daily use and reapplication. A formula you can use consistently is a more practical choice than one whose finish or texture makes you avoid it.

How to introduce a retinoid more cautiously
- Start with a low-intensity formula. AAD advises starting with the least intense retinoid formula you can find. The percentage of retinol is not required to appear on over-the-counter labels, so label information may not let you compare strengths directly.
- Begin every other night. AAD recommends using it every other night at first, then gradually building up as tolerated. If irritation becomes a problem, do not push through simply to follow a faster schedule.
- Use sun protection during the day. AAD advises daytime sun protection when using retinoids. Vogue’s general routine framing is to protect skin in the morning and use targeted actives at night, alongside gentle cleansing and moisture.
- Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. AAD says retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. For personal medical questions, consult a qualified clinician.
What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
These are useful starting points for comparing product roles and editorial favorites, but “top-rated” is not a clinical conclusion. TODAY combines dermatologist interviews, editor selections and customer-review screening; Healthline explains factors used for its serum picks; Vogue offers expert-informed category guidance. Their methods and categories differ, and customer reviews or an editorial award do not establish that a product will work for a particular reader.
Before choosing, match the product to your concern, skin type and tolerance, then consider texture, routine timing and price. A retinoid, a moisturizer and sunscreen do different jobs, so comparing them as if they were competing versions of one product obscures the most useful choice.
