For a 2025 cryptocurrency watch list, start with Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL), while tracking stablecoins as a separate part of the market. They represent different network purposes: Bitcoin emphasizes monetary settlement and store-of-value use, Ethereum supports a broad application and layer-2 ecosystem, and Solana targets fast, low-cost applications.
This is a research shortlist, not a prediction that any token will rise. The comparisons below use dated 2025 evidence and focus on purpose, application activity, market size, liquidity and risks—not short-term price targets.

How to interpret a 2025 crypto watch list
A useful watch list asks what each network is trying to do, whether people and applications are using it, how easily the asset can be traded, and what could impair that thesis. Transaction speed alone is not an investment ranking: throughput does not prove durable adoption or token value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Network purpose: the economic role the protocol is designed to serve.
- Ecosystem activity: applications, layer-2 networks and on-chain use relevant to that purpose.
- Market size and liquidity: the depth available to buyers and sellers, especially for larger trades.
- Risk: market, custody, technology, operational, cybersecurity and regulatory exposure.
Bitcoin (BTC): the monetary-network benchmark
Why Bitcoin belongs on the list
CME Group describes Bitcoin’s principal use cases as a store of value and a unit of exchange. Its development is decentralized: protocol changes depend on adoption by participants rather than on a central company that can simply push an update. That governance model is important to monitor because it can support resilience while making major changes slower and more contested. CME Group’s March 25, 2025 analysis provides this use-case and governance context.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What the 2025 activity data shows
The same CME analysis reports that Bitcoin’s daily on-chain transactions were generally 400,000–800,000 during much of 2024 and 300,000–500,000 so far in 2025. These are counts of on-chain transactions, not a measure of every economic use of Bitcoin and not a price signal.
What could weaken the case
- Transaction counts can fluctuate without demonstrating lasting demand or token value.
- Decentralized decision-making can make upgrades and scaling changes difficult to coordinate.
- Exposure remains vulnerable to the market, custody, cybersecurity and regulatory risks that apply across crypto assets.
Ethereum (ETH): the application and layer-2 platform
Why Ethereum belongs on the list
Ethereum’s central watch point for 2025 was whether its layer-2 strategy could expand usable blockspace and lower costs while preserving a coherent user experience. Layer-2 networks execute activity away from Ethereum’s base layer and settle back to it, allowing a larger application ecosystem to use Ethereum’s security and liquidity.
The Dencun effect and the remaining user problem
In its December 18, 2024 outlook for 2025, Coinbase Institutional reported that the March 2024 Dencun upgrade’s blob transactions reduced average layer-2 costs by more than 90% and coincided with a 10x increase in Ethereum layer-2 activity. Coinbase also identified rollup interoperability and bridge usability as unresolved challenges. Lower technical costs do not automatically mean a simple or safe user experience.

What could weaken the case
- Moving between rollups can require bridges, different interfaces and decisions about where assets are held.
- Fragmented liquidity and inconsistent user experiences can limit application growth even when fees are lower.
- Layer-2 activity measures ecosystem use, but they do not establish a particular return for ETH.
Solana (SOL): the high-speed application network
Why Solana belongs on the list
CME Group frames Solana around high-speed, low-cost transactions and applications including decentralized finance, non-fungible tokens, gaming and Web3. That makes the network’s application activity and reliability more relevant watch points than a headline throughput number.
Dated size and liquidity comparison
The following figures come from a Solana Trust registration statement filed with the SEC in September 2025, using data as of June 30, 2025. They are a historical snapshot, not current market rankings.
| Asset | Approximate market capitalization | Average daily trading volume | What the figures imply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | US$2.34 trillion | US$42.0 billion | Largest market and deepest volume among these three in the filing |
| Ethereum (ETH) | US$379 billion | US$16.9 billion | Substantially larger and more liquid than SOL in this snapshot |
| Solana (SOL) | US$88 billion | US$4.7 billion | Smaller market and volume; large trades can have greater price impact |
The filing explicitly cautions that Solana’s smaller size and liquidity can make large trades more price-impactful. See the Solana Trust S-1/A for the dated figures and risk disclosures.

What could weaken the case
- Lower liquidity can increase slippage and make volatility more consequential for large orders.
- Application growth depends on reliable network operation and sustained developer and user demand.
- Technology, custody, legal and regulatory risks can affect both the token and the businesses built on the network.
How BTC, ETH and SOL differ
These assets should not be treated as interchangeable. Their different purposes produce different adoption signals and failure modes.
| Watch-list question | Bitcoin | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Store of value and unit of exchange | Base layer for applications and layer-2 settlement | Fast, low-cost application platform |
| Activity to follow | On-chain transaction activity and participant adoption of protocol changes | Layer-2 costs, activity, interoperability and bridge usability | DeFi, NFT, gaming and Web3 use, plus network reliability |
| Liquidity profile in the June 30, 2025 SEC snapshot | Largest of the three | Middle of the three | Smallest of the three, with greater potential price impact for large trades |
| Distinctive risk to examine | Coordination and scaling trade-offs | Rollup fragmentation and bridge complexity | Smaller liquidity and technology or operational dependence |
Market context: why stablecoins matter, but are a different thesis
The Canadian Securities Administrators reported that global crypto market capitalization reached about US$4.4 trillion in October 2025, driven mainly by Bitcoin and stablecoins, before declining later. The figure is retrospective 2025 context rather than a current valuation.
The CSA also reported more than US$300 billion of stablecoin market capitalization—roughly 10% of the total—and said USDT and USDC together represented almost 90% of the stablecoin market. Stablecoins support decentralized-finance activity, derivatives collateral, international settlement and retail transactions. The CSA called them “a critical role in the crypto ecosystem.” Read the CSA’s 2025 Annual Report on Capital Markets.

Market, valuation and liquidity risk
Prices can move sharply, and a smaller or thinner market can make an otherwise ordinary order move the price. The dated SOL figures above illustrate why market capitalization and trading volume belong in a watch list alongside technology claims.

Technology, network and operational risk
Smart contracts, bridges, validators, software updates and infrastructure can fail or be attacked. Faster or cheaper transactions do not eliminate these dependencies.

Custody and private-key risk
The SEC-filed Solana Trust registration statement notes that private keys may be lost, destroyed or compromised through phishing, malware, insider misconduct, security breaches or human error, potentially causing permanent loss of access. A hardware wallet for cryptocurrency can keep keys offline, but it does not remove the need for secure backups, accurate addresses and protection against theft or user error.
Legal and regulatory risk
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 10, 2025 staff statement says crypto disclosures may need to address “price volatility, limited rights of holders, valuation and liquidity risks, technological risks, cybersecurity risks, business, operational, and network risks, and legal and regulatory risks.” Read the complete SEC statement. The statement is guidance about disclosure considerations, not a finding that every token has the same legal status.
Quick Recap
A practical way to monitor the 2025 shortlist
- Define the thesis. Decide whether you are studying monetary use (BTC), application and settlement growth (ETH), or high-speed application activity (SOL).
- Track the matching evidence. Use on-chain activity for Bitcoin, layer-2 cost and interoperability developments for Ethereum, and application activity, reliability and liquidity for Solana.
- Record dates and sources. Keep historical figures tied to their measurement date; do not present the June 30, 2025 SEC snapshot or October 2025 CSA market total as current.
- Stress-test the downside. Consider custody failure, cyberattack, network disruption, illiquidity and regulatory change before treating an observation as a reason to act.
- Separate observation from action. A network can show growing use while its token remains volatile, and a large market can still fall.
