But you may be able to use a particular app without paying directly through Google Play Pass, Family Library, rewards credit, an official promotion, or a free/open-source replacement.
The key is to distinguish free ownership from free access. The methods below are authorized, safer than cracked APKs, and realistic about their limitations.

What “free” means on Android
When someone says they want a paid app for free, they may mean one of five different things:
- Free forever: The app costs nothing, though it may use ads, donations, or optional purchases.
- Included access: A subscription such as Play Pass covers the app while the subscription remains active.
- Shared access: An eligible family member shares a purchase through Google Play Family Library.
- Credit-funded access: Rewards, gift cards, points, or existing Play balance pay for the purchase.
- Temporary access: A trial, promotion, or eligible refund allows short-term use, but not permanent ownership.
These distinctions matter because a free download is not necessarily a free license, and installing an APK outside Google Play does not make paid software lawfully free.
#1 Best Overall
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
1. Use Google Play Pass
Google Play Pass provides access to a changing catalog of more than 1,000 apps and games, generally without ads or in-app purchases. It does not include every paid app on Google Play, and availability varies by country and account. Google’s Play Pass support page lists the current terms and catalog rules.
How to check
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Play Pass.
- Select Get started and review the trial or subscription terms.
- On the specific app’s listing, look for the Play Pass logo before installing.
Best for: Someone who wants several premium apps or games, especially a household that can share the subscription.
Watch out for: Play Pass is a subscription, not permanent ownership. The catalog can change. If an app leaves the catalog, it may eventually require an individual purchase. When the subscription ends, paid apps may require payment and free apps may show ads or restore in-app purchases. A trial may also renew automatically unless canceled under its stated terms.
Recommended Free Tools
Search for the exact app before subscribing. A paid Play Store listing is not proof that Play Pass includes it.
2. Use Google Play Family Library
Google Play Family Library lets a family manager share eligible purchased apps and games with up to five family members. Members generally must live in the same country as the family manager, and developers can exclude apps from sharing. Google’s Family Library requirements explain the current eligibility rules.

Family manager setup
- Open Google Play and tap the profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Family.
- Select Sign up for Family Library.
- Invite actual household or family members.
- On the purchased app’s details page, enable Family Library if that option appears.
Look for the Family Library icon or wording such as Eligible for Family Library. In-app purchases generally are not shared, so Family Library may give you the app without unlocking its premium features.
Access can end if the purchaser removes the item, a member leaves the family group, or the purchase no longer qualifies. Do not buy, rent, or share Google accounts with strangers. Besides creating security and recovery problems, account sharing is not the same as authorized Family Library sharing.
3. Pay with Google Opinion Rewards or Play credit
You can sometimes buy an app without paying out of pocket by using an existing Google Play balance, gift card, legitimate promotional code, redeemed Play Points, or credit earned through Google Opinion Rewards.
With Opinion Rewards, you install the official app, complete profile questions, answer surveys when they arrive, and receive Google Play credit when a survey pays. Google does not promise a fixed number of surveys or a fixed reward amount. Availability varies by country and account, and some setup surveys do not pay. Google’s Opinion Rewards support page has the current details.
- Install Google Opinion Rewards from Google Play.
- Complete the profile information honestly.
- Answer available surveys.
- Wait for credit to appear in your Google Play balance.
- Use the balance to purchase the app normally from Google Play.
The credit is not cash, and there is no guarantee you will earn enough for a particular app. In the United States, qualifying Google Play Points can also be exchanged for Play credit. Google says U.S. Play Points cannot be bought, transferred to another account, or converted to cash, and they expire one year after the last time you earned or used them. Check Google’s U.S. Play Points rules; other countries may have different terms.

4. Wait for official sales, giveaways, or promotions
Developers and Google sometimes temporarily reduce an app’s price or make it available at no charge. This is the only route in this list that may provide a specific paid app as a normal purchase for $0, but it is title-specific and timing is not guaranteed.
- Open the app’s official Google Play listing.
- Add it to your Play wishlist.
- Check periodically for a price reduction or free promotion.
- Look for announcements on the developer’s verified website, newsletter, or official social accounts.
- Confirm the final price inside Google Play before completing the transaction.
Google’s 2026 Play updates describe wishlist sale alerts and promotional programs, but offers can vary by region, account, date, and app.
Check whether “free” applies to the app itself or only an in-app item. Also verify whether the deal requires a subscription, a payment method, new-user eligibility, or a limited redemption period. A free download may still contain subscriptions or in-app purchases.
Use Google Play or the developer’s clearly authenticated website—not an anonymous page that uses fake download buttons or redirects you to an APK mirror.
5. Choose a free or open-source alternative
If you need a function rather than one specific brand-name app, a free or open-source alternative may be the most durable solution. F-Droid is a repository for free and open-source Android software distributed under the developers’ respective licenses. It is not a source for pirated versions of commercial Play Store apps.

Search by purpose—such as note-taking, file management, podcast playback, media playback, calendars, password management, document viewing, image editing, or privacy tools—rather than searching for an unauthorized copy of the paid app.
Using F-Droid carefully
- Visit the official F-Droid website.
- Download the F-Droid client from that source.
- Allow installation from that source only when Android requests it; menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Review the alternative’s permissions, last update, license, and source-code links.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled.
- After installation, revoke the source’s permission to install unknown apps if you no longer need it.
Open-source alternatives may have fewer features, less polished interfaces, slower updates, or no access to proprietary account infrastructure. Check compatibility individually rather than assuming exact feature parity.
Refunds and trials are not permanent free access
Use a refund when a purchase was accidental or the app does not work as advertised—not as a loophole. Google says a refund request within 48 hours may be possible depending on the circumstances. After that, you generally need to contact the developer. A paid app or game can generally be returned only once.
When Google grants the refund, the app is uninstalled and access is removed. Start with Google’s current refund policy if you have a genuine problem.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why cracked and modded APKs are not a safe answer
Cracked or “modded” APKs commonly claim to unlock premium features, remove licensing checks, or provide paid apps for free. They should not be treated as legitimate alternatives.

- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
Unauthorized APKs can contain modified code, malware, spyware, ransomware, credential-stealing components, intrusive advertising SDKs, or hidden permissions. They can also break updates, corrupt cloud data, expose Google or banking credentials, and cause you to lose in-app purchases. Research on modified Android-app markets has documented altered apps being redistributed and premium features being unlocked; that does not mean every APK from every source is malicious, but it demonstrates why anonymous modified-app markets are high risk. See the ModZoo research.
Google’s Google Play Terms prohibit modifying Play content to disguise its ownership or source. Android also warns that apps from unknown sources can be harmful. Google’s Android download guidance recommends Google Play and describes Play Protect checks for potentially harmful apps.
Sideloading itself is not automatically piracy: installing a legitimate free or open-source APK from its developer can be authorized. But sideloading does not create a paid license or bypass a developer’s entitlement system. Never disable Play Protect to install a premium APK, and do not install patched apps, key generators, stolen accounts, or tools designed to bypass in-app purchases.
Which option fits your situation?
| Your situation | Best option | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You want many premium apps or games | Play Pass | Recurring subscription and changing catalog |
| A household member already bought the app | Family Library | Eligibility and family-group restrictions |
| You have time but little spare cash | Opinion Rewards | Unpredictable surveys and small rewards |
| You want one specific app | Official sale or promotion | No guarantee of timing |
| You want a permanent no-cost solution | Free/open-source alternative | May lack proprietary features |
| You want to test before committing | Eligible refund process | Access ends after a refund |
A simple verification rule
For a free or discounted Android app, use one of three sources: Google Play, the developer’s verified website, or a reputable open-source repository such as F-Droid. If a page promises “premium unlocked,” asks you to disable security protections, requests a strange account login, or hides the final seller and price, leave it.
