There is no single government table that officially ranks cybersecurity job and salary growth by city. The most defensible comparison combines metropolitan employment, concentration, pay and broader demand signals. Using that approach, the strongest U.S. markets are Washington, D.C.; San Jose; Seattle; New York; San Francisco; Baltimore; Dallas–Fort Worth; Atlanta; Boston; Huntsville; Denver–Boulder; and Colorado Springs.

The figures below use the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) occupation Information Security Analysts (SOC 15-1212) as a consistent benchmark. It does not include every cybersecurity role. CyberSeek’s broader workforce map complements it with modeled supply, demand, postings and career-pathway information. BLS projects this occupation to grow 29% nationally from 2024 through 2034, with about 16,000 openings a year on average; its May 2024 national median wage was $124,910. How this ranking works

This is an editorial composite, not an official federal ranking. The practical unit is a metropolitan area because cybersecurity employers, federal installations, hospitals, contractors and suburbs span city boundaries.

Factor Weight What it captures
Employment volume 25% Information-security-analyst employment and broader CyberSeek demand
Job concentration 20% BLS location quotient (LQ), where 1.0 equals the national concentration
Salary level 20% BLS annual mean wage
Salary growth 15% Comparable BLS wage change over time when available
Demand and growth 15% Current labor-market demand indicators
Resilience 5% Mix of government, defense, finance, health, technology and services employers

The metro numbers in the ranking table are May 2023 BLS estimates, the latest fully comparable figures supplied here. BLS May 2024 metro files are available through its metro-area tables; Colorado requires particular care because of a publication issue noted in that release. Mean wages are not guaranteed offers, exclude self-employed workers and can reflect a small number of senior jobs.

The 12 strongest cybersecurity markets

1. Washington, D.C. metro

Washington has the largest cited analyst workforce (16,630) and a 4.66 LQ, the strongest concentration among large markets. Its $142,150 mean wage reflects federal agencies, intelligence, defense contractors and regulated industries. It is especially suited to cleared professionals, incident responders, threat-intelligence specialists and governance, risk and compliance (GRC) practitioners.

Many jobs require or prefer a clearance, and the market covers Virginia, Maryland and the District, so commuting and contracting cycles matter. Candidates without a clearance should not assume the entire market is equally accessible.

2. San Jose–Silicon Valley

San Jose posted the highest cited mean wage, $170,960, with a 1.98 LQ. Software, cloud, semiconductor and venture-backed employers create deep demand for product security, application security, cloud engineering and security leadership. Housing costs can absorb much of the nominal premium, and technology hiring is cyclical.

3. Seattle

Seattle combined 3,910 jobs, a 1.63 LQ and a $154,600 mean wage. Cloud platforms, retail, aerospace and technology companies support identity, cloud and engineering careers. Housing is expensive and concentration among major technology employers can increase cyclical risk.

4. New York City metro

The metro had 11,660 jobs and a $146,540 mean wage. Banks, insurers, fintech, healthcare, media, retail and consulting provide unusually broad employer choice. Financial employers often value regulatory, risk and business-facing experience. Costs and commuting vary substantially across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

5. San Francisco Bay Area

The BLS series reports 4,520 jobs, a 1.62 LQ and a $157,660 mean wage for the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward area. It is a strong market for product security, cloud and application security, research and startups. It is distinct from the San Jose metro in BLS data, and both housing costs and startup volatility are high.

6. Baltimore

Baltimore had 4,310 jobs, a 2.86 LQ and a $139,830 mean wage. Federal agencies, defense contractors, healthcare systems and universities support operations, incident response and compliance careers. Some opportunities are part of the wider Washington contracting ecosystem, and clearance preferences are common.

7. Dallas–Fort Worth

With 6,450 jobs, Dallas–Fort Worth is one of the largest markets despite a lower $124,630 mean wage. Finance, telecommunications, healthcare, retail, energy, defense and managed services diversify demand. The geographically spread metro offers scale, but a lower average does not guarantee faster pay growth in every specialty.

8. Atlanta

Atlanta reported 4,800 jobs, a 1.47 LQ and a $124,130 mean wage. Payments, financial technology, logistics, telecommunications, healthcare and security-services firms support SOC, cloud and enterprise roles. Traffic, suburban geography and employer differences affect the practical value of an offer.

9. Boston

Boston had 3,920 jobs and a $132,810 mean wage. Biotechnology, healthcare, finance, higher education, defense and technology create varied paths, including research and application security. Housing is costly, and some roles favor degrees or specialized technical backgrounds.

10. Huntsville

Huntsville’s 1,340 jobs carry a 4.61 LQ, the highest concentration in this group, and a $117,080 mean wage. Defense, aerospace and federal contractors create mission-focused work. The market is smaller and clearance-heavy, but concentration and comparatively lower living costs can appeal to clearance-eligible candidates.

11. Denver–Boulder

Denver recorded 3,400 jobs, a 1.85 LQ and a $127,320 mean wage; Boulder’s mean was $142,670 with a 2.17 LQ. Cloud, software, aerospace and startups support technical careers. Combining the two areas is useful for readers but not a strict single-MSA comparison. Validate Colorado figures against the current BLS file.

12. Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs had 1,130 jobs, a 3.17 LQ and a $127,270 mean wage. Military, aerospace and secure mission systems make it attractive for cleared professionals. The employer base and total volume are smaller than in Denver, Dallas, Atlanta or Washington.

Which market fits your specialty?

  • Cleared government and defense: Washington, Baltimore, Huntsville, Colorado Springs and parts of Denver.
  • Cloud, product and application security: San Jose, San Francisco, Seattle and Boston.
  • Finance, risk and compliance: New York, Atlanta, Washington, Dallas and Boston.
  • Large-volume enterprise careers: Washington, New York, Dallas and Atlanta.
  • Concentrated smaller markets: Huntsville and Colorado Springs.

Typical roles include SOC analyst, incident responder, threat hunter, security engineer, cloud-security engineer, application-security engineer, identity specialist, GRC analyst, penetration tester, digital-forensics examiner, architect, manager and CISO-track positions. The BLS benchmark should not be presented as the salary for all of them.

Salary, cost and career-growth trade-offs

San Jose, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Boston and Washington offer high nominal wages, but housing, taxes, insurance and commuting can reduce purchasing power. Conversely, Huntsville, Colorado Springs and other smaller markets may offer stronger concentration or lower expenses without matching coastal pay. A real purchasing-power ranking requires a separate, cited cost-of-living dataset; these figures do not provide one.

“Salary growth” can mean nominal wage change, inflation-adjusted growth, progression from analyst to engineer or manager, or purchasing-power growth. BLS wage changes are the most defensible published comparison, but changes in employer mix, seniority and survey methods do not equal a raise for the typical worker.

Entry-level, certification and remote-work realities

A large market is not automatically beginner-friendly. Check for junior SOC roles, internships, apprenticeships, acceptance of adjacent IT experience, local training pipelines and realistic certification requirements. Security+ and ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity can support an entry path, but neither replaces hands-on work or an employer’s degree, clearance or role-specific requirements.

Remote and hybrid work blur city comparisons: a resident can work for an out-of-state employer, while a remote posting attracts national competition. Local offices still matter for networking, internships and employer density.

Strong alternatives just outside the top 12

  • Des Moines: $161,870 mean wage, 860 jobs and a 2.24 LQ; compelling pay and concentration, but limited depth.
  • Richmond: 2.21 LQ and $115,790 mean wage; a credible finance, government and enterprise alternative.
  • Albuquerque: 2.05 LQ and $126,350 mean wage; specialized federal and research work with a smaller market.
  • Charlotte: 2,400 jobs, 1.71 LQ and $135,720 in May 2022; refresh with current data before ranking.
  • Phoenix: 3,560 jobs and $101,930 in May 2020; reconsider only with updated demand evidence.

How to choose among the finalists

  1. Decide whether you want clearance-dependent, commercial technology or mixed enterprise work.
  2. Match your specialty to the employer mix rather than chasing the highest mean wage.
  3. Compare actual openings for your experience level, not just total occupation employment.
  4. Subtract housing, taxes, transportation and insurance from realistic offers.
  5. Use CyberSeek, employer career pages and local professional communities to verify current demand.
  6. Recheck BLS release dates and metro definitions before relocating; rankings can change as data is revised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which metro has the most cybersecurity analyst jobs?

Washington–Arlington–Alexandria had 16,630 Information Security Analyst jobs in the cited May 2023 BLS data.

Do cybersecurity jobs require a security clearance?

Not generally, but many roles in Washington, Baltimore, Huntsville, Colorado Springs and defense-heavy parts of Denver require or prefer one.

Is a certification enough to get hired?

Usually not by itself. Certifications can demonstrate baseline knowledge, while employers may also require practical experience, a degree, clearance or role-specific skills.

The Bottom Line

Choose Washington or New York for scale, San Jose or Seattle for high-paid technology work, Huntsville or Colorado Springs for concentrated cleared careers, and Dallas, Atlanta or Boston for diversified enterprise markets. Treat every wage as a dated metro average and test it against living costs and your actual specialty.
