How to choose an SEO agency for your business
The right shortlist depends on the work you need, not on an ordinal position in a roundup. A local business seeking local visibility, an ecommerce company working on category and product pages, and a technology firm with technical SEO needs may need different teams. Compare providers against your specific goals and constraints.
1. Match the agency’s experience to your work
Ask for a case study involving a similar sector and business model. Find out what the agency delivered and what the client team contributed. A result from a different market, site type, or business model may not tell you much about what to expect.

2. Check the proposed team’s capabilities
SEO can involve technical work, content, digital PR, local or international search, and ecommerce. Ask who will actually work on your account and whether their skills match the problem in your brief. A broad service list is less useful than a clear explanation of the relevant expertise.
3. Agree on outcomes and measurement
Ask how the work will connect to an agreed business outcome, such as qualified leads or revenue. Clarify the baseline, what will be reported, and how the agency distinguishes its contribution from other changes—such as seasonality, paid campaigns, or site updates made by your own team.

4. Understand the method and its risks
Ask the agency to explain its planned changes and link-acquisition methods in plain language. Google Search Central says, “There are no secrets here that’ll automatically rank your site first in Google (sorry!).” Google identifies creating links primarily to manipulate rankings as link spam and gives buying or selling links for ranking purposes as an example. That policy does not mean all link building is spam; ask what methods are proposed and why.
5. Make the working arrangement explicit
Before signing, establish who carries out the work, who owns content and accounts, what input your team must provide, how often you will communicate, and how changes to scope are handled. Unclear responsibilities can make it difficult to assess delivery or keep a project moving.

6. Compare the full commercial commitment
Compare the scope, deliverables, fees, contract length, exit terms, and internal resources each proposal requires. Do not assume that the agency listed first is the best choice for your needs or budget.
How important is local SEO for businesses?
It matters when customers search for a nearby provider or a service in a particular place. If local visibility is a priority, ask agencies about relevant local-search experience and how they will measure progress against your business goals. A location in the 2024 list alone does not establish that an agency specializes in local SEO.
Specialist categories can help you frame a shortlist: a March 23, 2026 eComOne roundup distinguishes areas such as ecommerce, technical SEO, digital PR, hospitality and travel, legal and property, recruitment, and B2B SaaS. This illustrates the value of matching expertise to the brief; it is not neutral evidence of agency quality, because eComOne is an agency and ranks itself first. See eComOne’s roundup for its stated categories.

Google Search Central says changes may take a few hours to several months to be reflected in search results and suggests waiting a few weeks to assess whether changes helped. That range is not a promised schedule for a particular campaign. Be wary of guarantees of a fixed ranking, first place, or instant results. Google’s SEO Starter Guide also advises creating useful, unique, current, people-first content.
