RM Sotheby’s reported $123,603,435 in sales for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Collection in 2025. Because those sales occurred across multiple auctions and concerned a museum collection, the amount should not be presented as one event’s proceeds or as a private collector’s total net worth in cars.

A record sale for a single car
RM Sotheby’s and Mercedes-Benz reported that a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for €135 million in 2022. The car came from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection. Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Källenius described it as the highest price ever paid for a vehicle in the company’s account of the sale. That record is a benchmark for one exceptional car, not evidence of the aggregate value of any collection.
What would make a top-ten ranking reliable?
A meaningful ranking would need valuations that refer to the same date and currency, identify the vehicles included, and use a comparable appraisal method. It would also need to separate private holdings from museum collections and cars assembled for auction. Without those details, a list may repeat striking numbers but cannot show that one collection is truly worth more than another.
