Allen & Atherton: What the “Top 10 UK Accounting Company” Claim Means

Allen & Atherton appeared at number three in a ten-company list published by TechTimes on March 6, 2023. That placement describes the article’s own list; it does not establish that Allen & Atherton is currently one of the UK’s top ten accounting firms under an independent ranking.

What “Top 10” means in this case

The exact headline, “Top 10 UK Accounting Company Allen & Atherton,” matches a TechTimes article published on March 6, 2023. TechTimes placed Allen & Atherton third in its list of ten UK accounting companies. The article does not, by that placement alone, establish a current industry ranking or explain a ranking methodology. Read the TechTimes article.

That distinction matters because a list position is not the same as a measured ranking based on a stated metric such as revenue, fee income, or number of partners. ICAEW describes the UK accountancy market as spanning the Big Four, mid-tier firms, and thousands of smaller firms and sole practitioners; it also points readers to annual surveys and professional directories for researching firms. ICAEW’s overview of the UK accountancy sector and its guide to firm surveys provide context, but neither establishes Allen & Atherton’s current standing.

What is known about Allen & Atherton

Allen & Atherton’s LinkedIn company profile describes its specialisms as tax planning and accounting services, identifies Aldgate, England as its headquarters, and displays a company-size range of 2–10 employees. These are profile details, not independently audited facts, and the employee range should not be read as a verified headcount. View the LinkedIn company profile.

TechTimes describes the business as UK-based with a global presence. Its article also attributes this statement to Simon Thomas of Allen & Atherton: “We have a global reach and access to the best tax barristers and lawyers. If you need to take urgent tax advice, we can be reached 24 hours a day.” That quotation reflects what the article reported in 2023; it does not independently confirm the firm’s current reach, access to advisers, or availability commitment.

How to check an accountant before engaging them

A listicle placing a firm in a top ten is not a substitute for checking whether its qualifications and services fit your needs. ICAEW advises people seeking an accountant to check qualifications and experience and provides a directory to search for chartered accountants and firms. Search ICAEW’s directory. A search for the firm in this directory did not establish an Allen & Atherton registration or credential, so verify any claimed membership or authorisation directly with the relevant professional body.

Rank #3
  • Confirm the legal identity. Ask for the firm’s full registered name and company number, then check official company records. The information available here does not verify Allen & Atherton’s Companies House identity.
  • Check the people doing the work. Ask who will advise you, what qualifications and relevant experience they hold, and which professional body—if any—oversees their work.
  • Clarify the service and terms. Get the work’s scope, fees, deadlines, responsibility for filings, and arrangements for urgent advice in writing. Do not assume the 24-hour statement attributed in the 2023 article is a current service guarantee.
  • Assess fit rather than headline rank. Compare firms on relevant services, client and sector experience, location, verifiable credentials, and published measures such as fee income or partner numbers where reliable surveys report them. ICAEW’s firm-survey guide points to resources for that kind of comparison.
