India’s biggest stories of 2025 ranged from a military response to a terror attack and major elections to deadly crowd incidents, an aviation disaster, trade tensions and winter air pollution. This is an editorial shortlist, not an official ranking: it weighs national reach, human impact, political or economic consequences, and how long each story remained in public discussion. The order is a way to follow the year, not a claim that one event mattered more than another.
1. Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor
The April 22 attack in Pahalgam was followed by India’s military operation across the night of May 6–7. The Ministry of Defence described Operation Sindoor as a response to the attack and said it was carried out in a “focused, measured and non-escalatory manner.” That wording is the government’s characterization; descriptions of targets, results and intent should likewise be attributed to official statements rather than treated as independently established facts.
Together, the attack and response made security and India’s relations with Pakistan central to the year’s news. They also kept the consequences of cross-border escalation in view well after the initial events.
2. Maha Kumbh crowd crush
A crowd crush at the Maha Kumbh gathering in Prayagraj on January 29 became one of 2025’s most consequential public-safety stories. The year-end coverage reported fatalities and injuries and a subsequent state inquiry. Because a precise toll should come from an official casualty record, this roundup does not give a number.
#1 Best Overall
The incident put crowd planning and emergency response at a vast religious gathering under scrutiny. An inquiry is important context, but its existence alone does not establish the cause of the crush or assign responsibility.
3. New Delhi railway station crowd crush
On February 15, a crowd crush at New Delhi railway station was reported to have killed 18 people amid heavy travel during the Maha Kumbh period. The toll is reported in the year-end roundup; it should not be mistaken for a verified finding about what caused the incident.
The event raised concerns about crowd management at a major transport hub during a peak travel period. Establishing the precise sequence of events and any operational failures requires evidence from the relevant authorities and investigations.
Rank #2
4. Air India Flight AI-171 crash
Air India Flight AI-171 crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released a preliminary report containing factual information on July 12, 2025. A preliminary report is not a final determination of cause.

In a progress statement issued in June 2026, the AAIB still described the investigation as ongoing. Until a final report establishes otherwise, claims about why the aircraft crashed should be treated as unconfirmed. The disaster was also a major test of how carefully officials, airlines and media communicate while an aviation investigation is under way.
5. Delhi and Bihar assembly elections
Assembly elections in Delhi and Bihar were among the year’s defining political events. The Election Commission of India (ECI) lists 2025 results for both in its statistical-report index. For the most reliable picture of the outcomes, consult the Commission’s constituency results and final statistical reports rather than relying on early headlines.
Bihar’s turnout figures illustrate why the date and status of an election statistic matter. An ECI press note first reported turnout of 66.91%, described as the highest since 1951; a later ECI note reported 67.13% after updates. The two figures reflect different reporting points, so 66.91% should not be presented as the final figure.
6. Crowd disasters at public events in Karur and Bengaluru
Later in the year, deadly crowd incidents in Karur and Bengaluru added to the public-safety story. The year-end roundup reported inquiries, but the incidents should be treated separately: a finding about one venue, event or crowd cannot be assumed to explain another.

Rank #4
7. Red Fort-area blast and investigation
A deadly car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort in November became a major security story. The year-end roundup identifies the blast, but a casualty figure or account of the investigation should be included only when confirmed by police or government sources.
In a developing investigation, early claims can outrun verified facts. Speculative explanations or alleged connections should not be repeated as established findings.
8. Trade, tariffs and foreign-policy recalibration
Trade and diplomacy were another defining thread of 2025. The Indian Express’s year-end synthesis describes a year shaped by US tariff pressure, trade agreements and diplomatic outreach. These developments matter beyond foreign policy: tariffs and trade terms can affect the conditions under which businesses sell, source and compete, with consequences that may reach workers and consumers.
The practical significance depends on the details of each agreement. Its status, legal commitments, implementation dates and affected sectors should be checked against the agreement text; a negotiation, announcement or political commitment is not automatically an implemented policy.

Severe air pollution in Delhi-NCR returned to the year-end news during December, alongside reported restrictions. Air-quality figures need their geography, pollutant or index, date and source attached; the available year-end account does not establish a specific reading to quote here.
A separate Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change review reported that 103 cities recorded lower PM10 levels in 2024–25 than in 2017–18. That is a ministry-reported comparison across a national programme and those periods; it does not negate a severe winter episode in Delhi-NCR. The ministry also reported that India had 96 Ramsar sites in 2025, with 11 additions during that year, a separate conservation milestone rather than a measure of urban air quality.
10. IndiGo’s December flight disruption
IndiGo faced widespread cancellations and passenger disruption in December, according to the year-end roundup. The coverage linked the disruption to crew availability, duty-time rules and winter conditions, and reported a regulatory response.

Those factors should not be collapsed into a single proven cause: the reporting does not establish that any one of them alone explains the disruption. For passengers, the immediate story was disrupted travel; for the wider aviation system, it raised questions about staffing, scheduling and compliance with operating rules.
Why these ten stories matter together
These events show how different kinds of risk shaped India’s year: security and diplomacy, safety at crowded gatherings and transport hubs, political change, international trade, aviation reliability and environmental conditions. The shortlist is deliberately selective. A year-end list weighted more heavily toward sport, science, technology or culture could reasonably include different stories, and the ten topics could be ordered differently.
