Tony Hsieh, the longtime Zappos chief executive who helped build the online shoe retailer into a major e-commerce business, died on November 27, 2020, at age 46. Amazon had acquired Zappos in 2009 in a deal widely reported at $1.2 billion. Hsieh retired as CEO in the summer of 2020, after 20 years with the company.
Who was Tony Hsieh?
Hsieh was an entrepreneur and investor best known for leading Zappos. He joined the company, then called ShoeSite.com, in 1999 and became its CEO. His career at Zappos spanned 20 years, ending with his retirement in summer 2020, according to Reuters and the Associated Press report published by CBS News.
How Zappos became part of Amazon
Amazon announced its acquisition of Zappos on November 2, 2009. Reuters and The Washington Post reported the transaction was valued at $1.2 billion; Amazon’s announcement confirms the acquisition date but does not establish that valuation in the announcement text.
Hsieh did not found Zappos: he joined, invested in and led the company. Amazon’s announcement is available from its US Press Center.

Hsieh also backed efforts to revitalize downtown Las Vegas through the Downtown Project. The Washington Post described it as a $350 million investment program. That figure refers to the Las Vegas initiative, not the Amazon-Zappos transaction. The Washington Post’s obituary covers both his Zappos leadership and the project.
