The costliest modern cars in current published rankings are Rolls-Royce’s La Rose Noire Droptail, at about $30 million, and its Boat Tail, at about $28 million. Both figures are media estimates for bespoke commissions, not manufacturer price lists. The ten-car ranking below orders cars by reported price as of October 8, 2026, and labels the evidence behind each figure. “Only billionaires can afford” is a headline device, not a test of who owns these cars.
How these prices were established
Not every number in car-price reporting carries the same weight. Three kinds of figure appear, and mixing them produces misleading comparisons.

Two rules follow. First, compare like with like: a euro figure and a dollar figure need an exchange rate, and none of the reports below states whether tax is included. Second, carry the publisher and date with every number. The Centodieci figure is the only manufacturer-attributed price here, and it comes second-hand, so check Bugatti’s original announcement before quoting it as Bugatti’s own figure.
The October 2026 top ten
This order follows a list titled Top Most 10, published October 3, 2026. It is a secondary ranking, not an official price list. The ranking labels some amounts as estimates or widely reported figures and does not label every entry individually, so unlabeled entries should be read as ranking figures rather than confirmed prices.

Where the rankings disagree
A May 2026 ranking agrees on the two Rolls-Royce leaders in broad terms but changes the order and the figures below them. It puts the La Rose Noire Droptail at $32 million, and it includes four cars that the October list does not:

In the other direction, the Bugatti Brouillard, F.K.P. Hommage, Gordon Murray S1 LM and Rolls-Royce Project Nightingale appear only in the October list. Some cars sit in both lists with different figures. The Bugatti La Voiture Noire is the largest gap: $13.4 million in October against $18.7 million in May. The Chiron Profilée and Centodieci match, and the Sweptail is close. The mismatch shows that a “top 10” depends on the date, the methodology and which transactions or commissions a publisher admits.

The completed sales: one auction on this list and one historic benchmark
The Gordon Murray S1 LM’s $20.63 million is the only completed auction result in the October table. The ranking treats it as a verifiable record, and CarCody reports the result as dated November 21, 2025. If you cite it, use the auction house’s published result where you can find one, since a secondary report is still a report.
The clearest documented high-price sale in the reporting is not a modern car. CarCody reports that the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for €135 million at a 2022 auction, and attributes the announcement to Mercedes-Benz Group. It is excluded from the ranking because it is historic, but it is a useful benchmark because it is a finished sale rather than a commission estimate.

A manufacturer-sourced example: the Bugatti Tourbillon
Bugatti Newsroom quotes Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac: “The development of the Bugatti Tourbillon was guided at every step by the 115 years of Bugatti history and the words of Ettore Bugatti himself.” The same release says the Tourbillon prototypes were in testing in anticipation of customer deliveries in 2026. No reliable Tourbillon price is established here, so the car does not appear in the ranking.

No reliable figure shows what share of owners of these cars are billionaires, and a car’s price does not establish its owner’s net worth. Commissions are usually confidential, and several entries are one-offs or runs of only a few examples, so the price reflects bespoke work and scarcity as much as anything about the buyer. What the reporting does support is narrower: these are among the costliest modern cars by reported price, and the figures behind them differ in how well they are documented.
