The Portland Trail Blazers sale is complete. The NBA approved a group led by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon on March 30, 2026, and the estate’s transaction counsel reported that the group completed its acquisition the next day. The reviewed announcements do not disclose a final purchase price or each investor’s ownership share.
Who bought the Trail Blazers?
A buyer group led by Tom Dundon acquired a majority ownership position in the Trail Blazers. The NBA said Dundon would serve as the team’s Governor. The completion notice identified the ownership group as Rip City Rising, but did not publish a full investor roster or individual stakes.
The NBA announced its Board of Governors’ approval on March 30, 2026 (NBA announcement). On March 31, Latham & Watkins, which represented the estate, reported that the acquisition had closed (transaction counsel’s completion notice).
What was included in the sale?
The completion notice says Rip City Rising acquired majority ownership positions in three entities: the Trail Blazers, the Rip City Remix, and Rip City Management. Rip City Management operates Moda Center and the Rose Quarter campus. The announcement describes majority positions; it does not provide exact percentages.

How much did the group pay?
The NBA approval announcement and the completion notice do not state a final transaction price. In August 2025, The Associated Press reported that ESPN had reported a $4 billion figure, while noting that Dundon had not disclosed terms to AP. That was an attributed report during the tentative-agreement stage, not a price confirmed in the later approval or closing announcements (AP report, August 13, 2025).
How the sale moved from proposal to completion
- May 13, 2025: the estate opened a sale process. The Trail Blazers said the estate had hired Allen & Company and Hogan Lovells to lead the process, with a final purchase agreement requiring NBA Board of Governors approval. The team described the sale as consistent with Paul Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct estate proceeds to philanthropy (team announcement via NBA.com and the Associated Press).
- August 13, 2025: a tentative agreement was reported. AP reported an agreement with a group led by Dundon and named Portland-based Collective Global co-founder Sheel Tyle and Blue Owl Capital co-president Marc Zahr among the group. At that point, league ratification was still needed.
- March 30, 2026: the NBA approved the sale. The league announced the Board of Governors’ approval and said Dundon would become the Trail Blazers’ Governor.
- March 31, 2026: the acquisition was reported complete. Estate counsel said Rip City Rising had completed its acquisition of majority positions in the team and the two related entities described above.
Why was Paul Allen’s estate selling the team?
Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder and former Trail Blazers owner, died in 2018. His sister, Jody Allen, served as trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust and chair of the team when the sale process was announced. The Trail Blazers’ statement said the sale was “consistent with Allen’s directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct all estate proceeds to philanthropy.” This was the estate’s stated rationale, not a disclosure of how or when charitable distributions would be made.

The May 2025 announcement said the process did not affect the estate’s interest in the Seattle Seahawks or its interest in the Seattle Sounders. Those holdings were not part of this Trail Blazers transaction.

The official NBA approval and completion announcements cited here do not make an express relocation commitment. AP’s August 2025 report said the buyer group planned to keep the team in Portland at the tentative-agreement stage. That dated report should not be treated as a new guarantee in the absence of a later explicit commitment in the cited official announcements.
