Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) issued termination notices to about 55 teaching staff and nearly 60 non-teaching employees on June 28, 2024, citing delayed funding for their salaries. Two days later, the institute withdrew the notices after Tata Education Trust (TET) committed to releasing funds. The episode concerned contractual employees on TET-funded projects—not all TISS staff—and the available reports do not establish how long the employees remained in their jobs afterward.
What happened at TISS?
On June 28, 2024, TISS issued notices to about 55 teachers and close to 60 non-teaching employees at its Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati campuses. The affected workers were employed on contracts for projects funded by TET. The notices said their services would end on June 30 unless approval or grant funding arrived. The Indian Express reported the notices and their stated funding condition.
On June 30, TISS withdrew the notices after TET committed to releasing funds. The Indian Express reported that the TISS administration confirmed a sanction of Rs 4.79 crore. The institute asked the employees to continue working and said salaries would be released after it received the support grant. The withdrawal reversed the immediate termination decision; it does not, by itself, establish when every salary was paid or what happened to each employee later. The Indian Express reported the withdrawal and funding commitment.
Which employees were affected?
The notices applied to contractual project staff whose salaries depended on TET funding. They did not announce the dismissal of all TISS employees. The contemporaneous coverage distinguished these workers from permanent faculty paid through UGC-supported posts.

The distinction matters: the notices reflected a funding problem affecting specific projects and contracts, rather than a confirmed institute-wide layoff. The reported total was about 55 teaching staff plus close to 60 non-teaching employees, across four campuses.
Why did TISS issue the notices?
TISS administration said it had pursued continuation of the grant and a funding decision for the preceding six months but had received no response or update before issuing the notices. That is the institute’s account of its dealings with the funder, not an independently audited account of the process. The immediate explanation given for the notices was that grant funds for salaries had not been released. The Indian Express reported the administration’s explanation.

A July 2 explainer reported that some faculty members linked the delay to changes in TISS’s governance structure. The administration rejected a connection between the new regulations and the termination episode. The reports therefore document competing explanations, not proof that governance changes caused the funding delay. The Indian Express’s explainer describes those positions.
What the reported figures do—and do not—show
The funding figures provide context for the dispute, but they should not be read as a current budget or staffing snapshot.

- Rs 4.79 crore: the amount the TISS administration said TET had sanctioned after committing to release funds, as reported on June 30, 2024. The report does not establish the timing or duration of all disbursements.
- Around Rs 75 lakh per month: a TISS official’s estimate of the monthly salary requirement for staff on Tata Trust projects, as reported in the July 2 explainer. It was an attributed estimate, not an audited expenditure figure or a current funding need.
- UGC-sanctioned positions: TISS’s 2022–23 annual report listed 181 sanctioned positions, of which 164 were filled, according to the 2024 explainer. It also reported 162 of 252 administrative positions filled. These are annual-report figures, not current headcounts.
The explainer said a committee would identify necessary UGC-approved posts and that the institute intended to recruit through advertised processes. Those were plans reported at the time; they do not establish that the affected project staff were later absorbed into permanent posts or that recruitment took place.

The June 30 withdrawal meant the notices issued two days earlier were rescinded after TET’s funding commitment, and TISS asked the employees to continue working. The cited 2024 reports do not establish how long that support lasted, when every salary was paid, or the affected employees’ later employment status. TISS’s archive lists the June 30 contract-termination update and later notices, but the index alone does not resolve those individual outcomes. TISS’s archive index is a record of posted notices, not evidence of what ultimately happened to each worker.
