Tim Cook presented Donald Trump with a one-off engraved glass plaque at the White House on August 6, 2025, during an announcement about Apple’s U.S. manufacturing plans. The official transcript records Trump thanking Cook, but it does not establish that Cook gave the gift to win Trump’s favor—or that it changed his view of Apple.
What did Tim Cook give Donald Trump?
Cook presented an engraved glass plaque during an Oval Office event. The White House gallery caption also identifies it as a glass gift and dates the presentation to Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The transcript’s stage direction calls the object a “glass plaque”; “trophy” is a looser description.
Cook described its materials and design this way: “This box was made here in the U.S. in California, and this glass comes off the Corning line, engraved for President Trump. It’s a unique unit of one.” He added, “And the base comes from Utah, and it’s 24-karat gold.” Cook said a former U.S. Marine Corps corporal working at Apple designed it. The transcript does not name the designer or the fabricator.
Trump responded, “Thank you very much. It’s fantastic.” That public reaction documents his response at the event, not his private opinion.

Why was the plaque presented at the event?
The gift was presented during an announcement about Apple’s domestic investment and manufacturing plans. President Trump said Apple would invest $600 billion in the United States over four years. The Associated Press reported that this represented an additional $100 billion beyond Apple’s previously stated plan, raising the announced figure from $500 billion to $600 billion.
The announcement concerned Apple’s American Manufacturing Program and work to expand parts of its supply chain and advanced manufacturing in the United States. The Associated Press reported that Cook’s investment statement covered new and expanded work with 10 companies, including Corning, Coherent, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments, and Broadcom. AP also cautioned that the plan was not a full commitment to make iPhones domestically.

Trump said the plan included a smart-glass production line in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The event linked Corning glass and the planned Kentucky line, but the transcript does not say the plaque was made on that planned line. The $600 billion figure was an announced commitment, not an independently audited total or proof that all the proposed production had been completed.

The available record does not establish Cook’s private motive. The official transcript describes the gift and the exchange, but does not say Cook intended to improve Trump’s opinion of Apple. Nor does Trump’s thanks show that the gift persuaded him or secured a policy outcome.

Axios characterized the plaque as part of a series of lavish gifts to Trump “in an attempt to curry favor,” and reported that such gifts raised ethical and legal concerns. That is Axios’s interpretation of a broader pattern, not proof of Cook’s intention in this case.
In an emailed response quoted by Axios, White House spokesman Davis Ingle said: “Elected leaders and business titans from around the world are traveling to the Oval Office to make historic investments into America because of President Trump’s bold vision,” and, “Often these leaders are eager to share gifts highlighting the exciting work they are doing.” Those remarks are the White House’s explanation, not independent evidence of Cook’s motive.
