Three-Hour TSA Lines: What the Reports Say—and What the $6.1 Billion Estimate Covers

Multi-hour TSA queues were reported at some airports during a March 2026 funding disruption. The separate $6.1 billion estimate covers the broader economic impact of the 2025 shutdown, not losses attributed only to security lines.

Two- to three-hour TSA lines were reported at some U.S. airports during a March 2026 funding disruption, and an industry association later estimated that the October–November 2025 shutdown cost the U.S. economy $6.1 billion. Those figures describe separate episodes: the $6.1 billion estimate is not a measured bill for TSA queues or a loss attributed solely to airlines.

As of October 4, 2026, the available evidence here does not establish current airport-by-airport waits. The most useful way to read the headlines is to separate the reported queue disruption, the staffing mechanism, and the broader shutdown-wide economic estimate.

Where and when were three-hour TSA lines reported?

Airlines for America, an airline trade group, said on March 8, 2026 that TSA lines were two to three hours long at some airports during a funding disruption, with passengers experiencing delays and missed flights. Its statement is evidence of reported disruption, not a nationwide measurement of checkpoint waits. Airlines for America’s March 8 statement

A House hearing document later reported that waits at certain airports exceeded four and a half hours during that March 2026 funding lapse. It said that, as of March 24, TSA had lost around 460 officers since the lapse began, while nationwide checkpoint callouts had risen from 4% before the lapse to 11%; multiple airports were reported above 40% or 50%. These are figures reported in the hearing document for that episode, not current October 2026 staffing or wait-time data. House hearing document, March 25, 2026

The date distinction matters. TSA’s May 20, 2026 statement forecast minimal wait times for the Memorial Day travel period and said it expected to screen 18.3 million passengers and crew from May 21 through May 27. That was an agency forecast for a specific week, not an observed total and not evidence of conditions in October. TSA’s May 20, 2026 statement

What does the $6.1 billion figure actually measure?

The U.S. Travel Association estimated that the October–November 2025 shutdown had a $6.1 billion impact on the U.S. economy. Its March 2026 fact sheet also characterized the estimated daily impact as more than $140 million and said more than 5 million trips were disrupted. These are the association’s estimates for the shutdown, not an audited TSA accounting or a cost calculation isolating checkpoint queues, airlines, or any one part of the travel industry. The same fact sheet reported that TSA screened 906 million passengers in 2025 and that there were eight days that year with more than 3 million passengers screened in one day, which it described as a record. Those figures provide scale for the screening system; they do not show that those passengers faced long lines or quantify financial losses from queues. U.S. Travel Association fact sheet, March 2026

How can staffing shortages at checkpoints affect travel?

TSA testimony describes the operational link: when more officers call out, fewer are available to staff screening lanes, which can lengthen waits. Longer waits can contribute to delayed or missed flights and create wider economic effects. The sequence explains how a staffing disruption can ripple beyond a checkpoint; it does not by itself assign a dollar value to each missed flight or establish the share of a shutdown-wide estimate caused by security lines. Airline-industry statements provide reports of operational disruption and concern, while the association’s economic estimate covers the broader shutdown. Neither should be treated as an independent, queue-only accounting of losses across airlines, hotels, or the travel sector. Airlines for America’s March 8 statement White House release reproducing airline executives’ concerns

What should travelers take from the reports?

  • Waits are location- and date-specific: reports of multi-hour queues in March do not establish that every U.S. airport had such lines, or that the disruption continued into October.
  • A dated forecast is not a live wait-time report. TSA’s May Memorial Day outlook cannot confirm current conditions on October 4, 2026.
  • The $6.1 billion headline figure is a U.S. Travel Association estimate for the October–November 2025 shutdown’s overall economic impact, not a verified loss caused solely by TSA queues.
  • The evidence cited here does not establish a universal recommended airport-arrival buffer or guarantee that an expedited screening program will avoid a staffing-related disruption.

Is the TSA security fee a measure of the cost of long lines?

No. TSA lists a passenger security fee of $5.60 per one-way trip originating at a U.S. airport, capped at $11.20 for a round trip. The fee is collected through air carriers; it is background information, not a calculation of losses from waiting in a checkpoint line. TSA passenger security fee
