Boeing’s current target is to deliver its first 777-9 in 2027, but that date remains a forecast, not a confirmed delivery. Certification flight testing is still under way, and Boeing has not announced that the aircraft has received type certification.
When is the Boeing 777X expected to be delivered?
Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 results say the company continues to anticipate the first 777X delivery in 2027. The target is for the 777-9, the first variant scheduled to enter service. Boeing’s August 2026 update on natural-icing tests likewise said it was working toward completing certification tasks in 2026 and a first delivery in 2027.
That schedule has moved: Boeing’s 2025 annual report says the company reassessed the timing needed to complete FAA certification flight testing in the third quarter of 2025 and delayed the first 777-9 delivery to 2027. The present date is therefore Boeing’s latest stated forecast, not a guarantee that delivery will happen during that year.
Emirates’ expected first delivery
Emirates president Tim Clark told Reuters in June 2026 that the airline expected its first 777X in May or June 2027, while adding, “Anything can go wrong … but it’s in good shape.” That is a customer’s expectation, not a confirmed handover date. At the November 2025 Dubai Airshow, Emirates chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said the airline looked forward to its first 777-9 deliveries “starting from the second quarter of 2027.” The announcement brought Emirates’ 777-9 order total to 270.

What is the status of 777-9 certification?
Boeing said in its second-quarter 2026 results that the 777X program had received FAA approval to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization 4B. Testing is continuing; approval to begin that phase is not the same as completed testing or type certification.
In a July 2026 update, Boeing reported that the 777-9 test fleet had completed more than 4,800 flight hours and roughly 1,700 flights, with 50% of planned certification testing complete. In August, Boeing described natural-icing work as part of the ongoing effort. These are Boeing-reported test-program figures and milestones, not evidence that the FAA has certified the aircraft.

The FAA’s general certification explanation says its process has multiple phases, beginning with familiarization and ending when the agency issues type and production certificates. That description is not a 777X-specific status report, but it helps explain why a flight-test milestone does not by itself authorize customer deliveries.
Why has the 777X been delayed?
Boeing’s 2025 annual report cites the time needed to complete FAA certification flight testing and continued production challenges. The company slowed its production-rate plans to address those challenges, which increased estimated production and change-incorporation costs.

The financial impact Boeing reported
The Boeing Company recorded an incremental reach-forward loss of $4,899 million during 2025, according to its annual report. This is a program accounting loss; it should not be read as a single cash payment of that amount.

Does the 2027 date apply to every 777X?
No. The 2027 forecast is for the 777-9. Boeing’s annual report gives later timing for the other variants:
| Variant | Boeing’s stated delivery timing | Boeing-listed design specifications |
|---|---|---|
| 777-9 | First delivery anticipated in 2027 | 375–450 seats in a two-class layout; range up to 8,000 nautical miles; GE9X engines |
| 777-8 Freighter | First delivery expected approximately two years after the first 777-9 delivery | Not stated in the cited annual-report schedule; Boeing’s product specifications list the 777-8 passenger variant separately |
| 777-8 passenger | First delivery not expected before 2030 | 350–425 seats; range up to 9,500 nautical miles |
The seat and range figures are Boeing design specifications, not independently verified in-service performance. The annual report’s timing for the freighter is relative to the first 777-9 delivery, so it does not establish a fixed calendar year.

What to watch for next
The schedule depends on completing certification work and moving through the remaining FAA process, as well as Boeing’s ability to address production challenges. A new Boeing earnings report, an FAA certification milestone, or an updated airline delivery schedule could change the outlook. Until one of those establishes a firmer event, 2027 should be treated as the current target rather than a guaranteed date.
