The standalone Zelle app stopped sending and receiving money on April 1, 2025. Zelle itself remains available through participating banks’ and credit unions’ mobile apps and online banking. If you already used Zelle through your financial institution, you did not need to do anything because the standalone app was discontinued. If you used only the standalone app, check whether your bank or credit union participates and enroll through its digital banking service.
What happened to the Zelle app?
Zelle phased out enrollment and payments in its standalone app. In its October 31, 2024 announcement, the company said most customers used Zelle through their financial institution, so it was changing the standalone app. Zelle’s FAQ says standalone-app users could no longer send or receive money starting April 1, 2025. Zelle’s transition FAQ explains the change.
The app’s payment functions ended; the Zelle service did not. Customers can still use Zelle through participating banks’ and credit unions’ mobile apps and online banking. The change did not require existing bank-app users to download a replacement Zelle app or take action.
How to keep using Zelle
- Check whether your institution participates. Search for your bank or credit union in Zelle’s enrollment directory. Zelle’s contact page listed over 2,400 banking and credit union apps offering the service when accessed October 8, 2026; availability can change.
- Enroll through your financial institution. If it appears in the directory, open its official mobile app or online banking and follow the Zelle enrollment instructions. The directory directs customers to their institution to complete enrollment.
- Ask if it is not listed. Check the directory again later or contact your bank or credit union to ask whether it offers Zelle. The network says it continues to grow. You do not need to switch institutions just because the standalone app ended.
How Zelle transfers work—and what to check
Zelle lets customers send money to or receive money from people they know and trust using a recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number. Both parties need eligible U.S. checking or savings accounts. Transfers typically arrive within minutes when the recipient is already enrolled, but that is not a guarantee that every payment will be immediate. See Zelle’s service overview.

Zelle describes payments as direct transfers between bank accounts. Enrollment through an institution does not establish universal fees, transfer limits, processing times, or remedies: those details can depend on the financial institution and account. Zelle’s contact page reports that 99.40% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money, based on a Q1 2026 survey of financial institutions. That survey result is not a promise that a particular account is fee-free.
Who to contact if something goes wrong
If you have trouble enrolling in Zelle or making a payment inside your bank or credit union’s app, contact that institution. Zelle directs customers to call the number on the back of their debit card for help with institution-based Zelle access. Zelle’s contact page provides its support guidance.

Why Zelle made the change
In its October 31, 2024 announcement, Zelle said more than 2,200 financial institutions were on its network, nearly half a trillion dollars moved through Zelle in the first half of 2024—up 28% year over year—and about 2% of transactions took place on the standalone app. Those figures describe the network and usage at the time of the announcement, not current totals. Zelle’s stated rationale was that the vast majority of people used the service through online banking. Read the October 2024 announcement.
