The World’s 4 Most Expensive Private Jets—and Their Reported Owners

Katadata’s 2021 ranking puts an A380 attributed to Alwaleed bin Talal first at $502 million—but delivery and price estimates make any definitive ranking uncertain.

The highest figure in a widely repeated four-jet ranking is $502 million for an Airbus A380 attributed to Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal. But that A380’s delivery is disputed: one account says it changed hands before completion, while another says it was never delivered. The ranking is therefore best read as a list of reported estimates and attributions—not a definitive ranking of completed aircraft currently owned and operated by these people.

The four jets in Katadata’s 2021 ranking

Katadata’s 2021 list, which it says is based on information from privatejetcharter.com, names these four aircraft and figures. Katadata also discloses that its page is an AI-generated translation. The dollar amounts are the list’s reported estimates or prices; they are not a standardized set of verified sale prices.

Rank in the list Aircraft and reported attribution Reported figure (USD) What the figure represents—and what is known
1 Airbus A380, attributed to Alwaleed bin Talal $502 million Katadata’s reported figure for the A380. Sotheby’s says the aircraft changed hands before completion; Luxe Digital says it was never delivered. Neither account establishes that Alwaleed owns or operates a completed A380.
2 Airbus A340-300, attributed to Alisher Usmanov $400 million Katadata’s estimate. A 2012 Moscow Times report republishing Bloomberg reporting says Usmanov acquired an A340 and quotes an industry editor on how cabin outfitting could raise the cost; it does not verify a final total.
3 Boeing 747-8 VIP, attributed to Hong Kong businessman Joseph Lau $367 million Katadata’s figure. LegalClarity describes it as a total estimate that distinguishes the aircraft’s airframe price from the estimated interior buildout; the reviewed material does not establish a verified transaction price.
4 Boeing 747-430, attributed to Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah $323 million Katadata’s 2021 estimate. A later secondary overview gives a wider reported investment range, reinforcing that the figure should not be treated as a confirmed sale price.

Why lists disagree about the most expensive private jet

Some rankings count the A380 commission; others do not

The A380’s place at the top depends on whether a ranking counts an aircraft reported as commissioned or attributed to a person even though it was not delivered as a completed jet. Katadata includes it. Luxe Digital excludes it on the grounds that it was never delivered, and instead describes Alwaleed’s Boeing 747-400 as worth an estimated $500 million. With that rule, the A380 does not take first place; the ranking changes according to what each list counts.

An airframe price is not the same as a finished VIP aircraft

These private jets are based on large commercial aircraft that can be extensively reconfigured. The cost of the airframe and the cost of a bespoke cabin are separate components, so a published total may reflect an estimate of both rather than a purchase price for a standard aircraft. Air Charter Service notes that the 747-8 VIP’s initial price excludes luxury fittings added after purchase.

  • Detailed Aircraft Toy: Die-cast metal Private Jet aircraft featuring detailed design and real markings.
  • Runway Section Included: Includes a flexible rubber runway section that can be used with other RUNWAY24 sets.
  • Build Your Own Airport: Combine runway sections from different RUNWAY24 sets to create your own airport setup.
  • Military Aviation Design: Features a military aviation-style aircraft with realistic markings for imaginative play and collecting.
  • Ages 3+: Designed for ages 3 and up, making it a fun addition to aircraft collections and imaginative play.

The distinction is illustrated by the A340 reporting. The Moscow Times’ 2012 article, republishing Bloomberg reporting, gives a 2001 catalog price of $238 million and quotes Oleg Panteleyev, identified as an Aviaport.ru editor: “The plane’s 2001 catalog price was $238 million, though the final cost could swell to $500 million depending on how it’s decorated and outfitted.” That is a reported industry estimate of a possible finished cost, not confirmation of what Usmanov ultimately paid.

The figures are not a standardized market ranking

The cited lists do not establish a common valuation method, a consistent treatment of cabin completion, or verified sale prices for all four aircraft. Nor do the reviewed ranking and ownership accounts establish current registry or beneficial ownership for every jet. The names in the table are therefore reported attributions, not confirmation of present ownership.

How to read a private-jet price list

  • Check what is being counted. A commission, an aircraft that changed hands before completion, and a delivered aircraft in private operation are not equivalent entries.
  • Check the price basis. Look for whether the amount refers to the airframe, a catalog price, a completed cabin, or an overall estimate.
  • Check the evidence and date. A contemporary report of an acquisition, a later editorial estimate, and a current ownership record answer different questions.
  • Check the attribution. A name repeated in a ranking does not by itself prove current registry or beneficial ownership.
