The Wolf of Wall Street: What Leonardo DiCaprio Was Reportedly Paid—and What We Know About His Highest-Paid Roles

Leonardo DiCaprio’s pay for The Wolf of Wall Street has been reported at $25 million upfront, but that figure comes from a 2025 secondary article—not a published contract. The available evidence does not support a definitive ranking of his highest-paid movie roles: public figures mix upfront salaries, later participation and earnings across entire years.

What was DiCaprio reportedly paid for The Wolf of Wall Street?

Acting Magazine reported in 2025 that DiCaprio received $25 million upfront for his role in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film. Treat that as a reported estimate, not a confirmed contract amount: the underlying deal terms have not been established by a public contract disclosure. Acting Magazine’s 2025 report

The distinction matters because “upfront” is not necessarily the same as total compensation. A deal may include participation or other contingent payments, but the available reporting does not establish a verified final total for DiCaprio’s work on this film.

Why there is no reliable ranking of his highest-paid movie roles

Public salary roundups do not consistently measure the same thing. A reported base salary, an upfront fee, later gross participation and total earnings over a multi-year period are different measures. Without contract records and a consistent accounting of backend receipts, they cannot be combined into an audited per-film ranking.

  • Upfront or base salary: reported initial compensation for a role, which may exclude later payments.
  • Participation: compensation tied to a film’s financial performance or receipts; it can change the eventual total.
  • Period earnings: income attributed to an actor over a defined span, potentially covering multiple projects and sources.

These differences make a list of “highest-paid roles” less certain than a list of reported figures. The sources available do not reconcile DiCaprio’s total compensation film by film.

What the other widely cited figures actually measure

Figure What it refers to How to read it
$77 million Forbes’ 2011 estimate of DiCaprio’s earnings over its 2010–2011 measurement period Period-wide earnings, not pay for one film. Forbes, 2011
$2.5 million base salary Celebrity Net Worth’s estimate of DiCaprio’s Titanic base salary; the page says gross participation later increased his total A secondary estimate, not a disclosed contract or a final total. Celebrity Net Worth, accessed 2026
$25 million upfront Acting Magazine’s 2025 report on The Wolf of Wall Street A secondary reported estimate, not a confirmed contract amount. Acting Magazine, 2025

The $77 million Forbes figure can show that DiCaprio ranked as Hollywood’s highest-earning actor for that publication’s stated period; it cannot identify which single role paid him the most. Similarly, the Titanic estimate separates a reported base salary from later gross participation rather than establishing an all-in payday.

Why the film’s box office is not DiCaprio’s pay

TIME reported in 2014 that The Wolf of Wall Street had grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. That is an estimate of the film’s box-office gross, not the amount paid to DiCaprio. A movie’s gross does not reveal an actor’s compensation without the relevant deal terms and accounting. TIME, 2014

The film is Scorsese’s 2013 adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s rise and fall, starring DiCaprio. The Hollywood Reporter
