Use this 41-item college packing list as a starting point, not a shopping mandate. Your residence hall, room layout, climate, and campus rules determine what you actually need. Check what your school supplies, confirm your bed size, and coordinate shared items before buying. Duke Student Affairs advises, “When in doubt, pack light—you can always add items once you settle in.”
How to read this list: “Essential” means a practical day-one basic for most students. “Check first” means confirm the room setup or campus policy before purchasing. “Optional” means useful for some students or rooms, but easy to add later. The 41 entries are an editorial checklist, not an official or universal requirement; SIU University Housing says its own list items are “suggested, not required.”
What to check before you shop
- Room provisions: Check the assigned residence hall’s furniture, amenities, and included appliances. SIU asks students to verify what is furnished; Cincinnati advises checking the assigned community’s bed size and provisions. SIU’s packing list and Cincinnati’s packing list are examples of campus-specific guidance.
- Mattress size: Twin XL is common, but not universal. Rochester recommends Twin XL sheets, Oregon says most beds are Twin XL while directing students to their room assignment for the exact size, and Cincinnati notes that some rooms use full beds. Confirm your assigned mattress before ordering a sheet set. See Rochester’s list, Oregon’s list, and Cincinnati’s list.
- Appliances and electrical items: Read your current residence hall rules before buying a mini-fridge, microwave, power strip, or other appliance. Rules differ by campus and may cover capacity, certification, or prohibited heating elements. Duke’s guidance permits UL-approved power strips but advises against extension cords and prohibits several open-heat appliances. Oregon’s rules include limits and prohibitions for specific appliances.
- Roommates and dimensions: Ask roommates who is bringing shared items, and measure before buying organizers or bulky equipment. Cincinnati recommends coordinating shared purchases. A school’s current housing page is the authority for your room, not another campus’s list.
The 41-item college packing list
Bedding
- Sheets sized to your assigned bed — Essential. Confirm whether your room has Twin XL, full, or another size before ordering. Twin XL sheet sets are common on college lists, but not universal.
- Pillow — Essential. Bring one that suits how you sleep.
- Pillowcase — Essential. Pack at least one that fits your pillow.
- Comforter or blanket — Essential. Choose weight appropriate to your climate and preferences.
- Mattress pad — Optional. Consider one for comfort after confirming the mattress dimensions and whether one is already provided.
Bathroom and personal care
- Bath towels — Essential. Bring enough to use while others are drying or in the wash.
- Washcloths — Essential. Pack the number you normally use.
- Shower shoes — Essential for shared bathrooms. They may be unnecessary if your room has a private bathroom.
- Shower caddy — Check first. Useful for carrying toiletries to a communal bathroom; less useful if you have convenient private storage.
- Everyday toiletries — Essential. Pack the personal-care products you use regularly, such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and deodorant.
Laundry and cleaning
- Laundry hamper or bag — Essential. Choose a format that fits your room and is easy to carry to the laundry area.
- Laundry detergent — Essential. Bring a type that works for your laundry needs and any machines you expect to use.
- Basic room-cleaning supplies — Essential. Bring a small, practical set suited to your housing arrangement; the needs of a shared suite may differ from those of a traditional hall room.
- Stain remover — Optional. Bring it if you already use it, or wait until you need it.
Study materials and electronics
- Laptop — Essential for students whose coursework requires one. Check course or program requirements if you are unsure which device is suitable.
- Laptop charger — Essential. Pack the charger for your device.
- Phone charger — Essential. Bring the correct cable and power adapter.
- Course-specific materials — Check first. Wait for course instructions where books, supplies, or specialized equipment may vary.
- Core stationery — Essential. Start with the writing and note-taking supplies you actually use.
- Headphones — Optional. Helpful for study or calls in a shared space.
- Power strip — Check first. Use only a model and setup permitted by your residence hall. Duke, for example, permits UL-approved power strips and advises against extension cords; that policy does not establish what another campus allows. Check Duke’s example guidance and your own hall’s current rules.
Clothing and weather
- Everyday clothing — Essential. Pack a manageable rotation suited to the season and your laundry routine.
- Weather-appropriate outerwear — Essential. Consider the climate where you will study, not just the weather at home.
- Everyday shoes — Essential. Bring comfortable footwear for routine campus walking.
- Weather-specific shoes — Check first. Add rain, snow, or other specialty footwear if local conditions and your needs warrant it.
- Presentable outfit — Optional. Useful if you expect interviews, presentations, events, or other occasions that call for one.
Food and room basics
- Reusable water bottle — Essential. A bottle you already use is usually enough.
- Reusable cup — Optional. Bring one if it suits your routine.
- Unbreakable plate — Check first. A small set can be useful if your room setup and food plans call for it.
- Unbreakable bowl — Check first. Bring one only if you expect to use it.
- Reusable utensils — Check first. A compact set may be useful for snacks or meals in your room.
- Food-storage containers — Optional. Check available space and your meal plans before packing a stack.
- Storage or closet organizer — Check first. Measure the room and check what storage is already provided before buying.
Personal administration and preparedness
- Student ID — Essential when issued. Bring it if you have received it before move-in.
- Government ID — Essential as appropriate. Bring identification you use for travel or necessary tasks.
- Important personal documents — Check first. Bring documents you know you will need; keep them secure and avoid packing unnecessary originals.
- Basic first-aid supplies — Essential. A small kit can cover routine minor needs; follow any relevant medical guidance you have.
- Flashlight — Optional. Useful if you want a backup light source.
- Batteries — Check first. Bring only the types needed for items you are actually packing.
Personal touches
- Photos or small decorations — Optional. Choose a few meaningful items rather than packing a full room’s worth.
- Wall-hanging supplies — Check first. Verify what adhesives or hanging methods your residence hall allows; fire-safety and wall-damage rules may apply.
What not to bring until you have checked
- Prohibited or uncertain appliances: Open-heat appliances and other restricted equipment can be disallowed. Check the current rules for your assigned building rather than assuming a policy from another school applies.
- A mini-fridge or microwave bought on assumption: Campus rules may set capacity limits, restrict appliance types, or provide a rental option. For example, Rochester lists a 4.5-cubic-foot maximum mini-fridge and a small microwave subject to local rules; Oregon lists a 4.6-cubic-foot maximum; SIU lists a 4.2-cubic-foot limit for its residence halls. These are school-specific examples, not general allowances. Verify current rules with your own housing office: Rochester, Oregon, and SIU.
- Extension cords or an unverified power strip: Electrical rules vary. Duke advises against extension cords and allows UL-approved power strips, but follow your own campus policy. Duke’s list is an example, not a universal rule.
- Bulky decor, organizers, and duplicate shared items: Wait until you have room measurements and have talked with your roommate.
- Every item on any published checklist: SIU explicitly notes that its list is suggested, not required. Decide based on your own room and routine.
How to avoid overpacking and unnecessary spending
- Start with your assigned room information. Confirm furniture, bed size, bathroom arrangement, and what is already supplied.
- Sort purchases into three groups. Pack day-one essentials, defer check-first items until you verify policies and dimensions, and leave optional items at home unless you know you want them.
- Coordinate with your roommate. Agree on shared supplies and who will bring each one before either of you buys duplicates.
- Pack for the first stretch, not every imagined situation. You can add items after you see the room and learn your routine. Duke Student Affairs offers the practical rule: “When in doubt, pack light—you can always add items once you settle in.”
Housing policies and provisions can change, so use your assigned residence hall’s current guidance for final decisions. SIU’s packing list, for example, identifies itself as updated July 29, 2026; other campuses maintain their own lists and rules.
