Check that the child’s Zip Oyster photocard can be managed in your account
A parent or guardian applies for an 11–15 Zip Oyster photocard on the child’s behalf using a TfL web account. TfL’s 11–15 Zip Oyster photocard guidance explains the application route, while its online account terms describe Auto top-up for Oyster cards generally. Those public pages do not explicitly settle eligibility and account-linking for every child photocard.
Sign in to your TfL Oyster account and check the card’s available management options. If Auto top-up is not offered for the child’s photocard, or you cannot tell whether the right card is linked, contact TfL to confirm before proceeding. The exact labels and click-by-click path in the signed-in account are not established in TfL’s public guidance.
Set up Auto top-up for an eligible card
- Sign in: Open the TfL Oyster account that manages the child’s photocard and select the relevant card.
- Choose the amount: If the account offers Auto top-up for that card, select £10, £20 or £40. TfL says the chosen amount is added when the pay-as-you-go balance is below £20 as the card is touched in to start a journey.
- Assign a payment card: Choose the debit or credit card to be charged. Under TfL’s terms, Auto top-up uses a Continuous Payment Authority. This is not a fixed monthly subscription; payment is taken when an Auto top-up is added.
- Activate the instruction: Wait at least 30 minutes after placing the order, then use the Oyster card to touch in on a TfL yellow reader as part of a journey. Do this within four days of the order.
TfL lists eligible yellow readers at London bus, Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail services within the pay-as-you-go area, as well as tram stops and River Bus piers. If you miss the four-day window, the instruction expires and you need to set it up again.

If the card is new, or you change the setting later
New card ordered with Auto top-up
TfL says a newly ordered Oyster card with Auto top-up arrives with the feature already set up. This guidance does not explicitly confirm whether the same process applies to every newly issued Zip photocard, so check the order details or ask TfL if the child’s card is involved.
Amending or cancelling Auto top-up
A change or cancellation is not applied to the physical card immediately. TfL says the update takes effect when the card is touched in on a journey within four days; until then, the existing setting remains on the card. Follow any activation instructions shown when you request the change.

Keep payments and the card account in good order
- Monitor emails from TfL about Auto top-up payments and keep the assigned payment details current.
- If a payment fails, follow TfL’s instructions promptly. TfL says the card may be stopped if the failed payment is not corrected within two days of TfL contacting the account holder.
- Report a lost or stolen card to TfL promptly. Auto top-up can continue until the loss is reported, and the account holder remains liable for payments taken before the report.
