The U.S. Mint’s 2026 $1 Coins Feature Steve Jobs and the Cray-1—Separately

Steve Jobs and the Cray-1 appear on separate 2026 American Innovation $1 coins. Here are the designs, release details and what collectors should check before buying.

Yes—but the headline needs a distinction: the U.S. Mint’s 2026 American Innovation $1 program features Steve Jobs on California’s coin and the Cray-1 supercomputer on Wisconsin’s coin. They are separate $1 coins, not a joint design. Their announced roll-and-bag sale dates have passed, though availability varies by product.

What the 2026 coin program includes

The American Innovation $1 Coin Program began in 2018 under Public Law 115-197. It recognizes innovations and innovators associated with the 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories. State or territorial officials and subject-matter experts help develop design concepts; the Treasury secretary selects the final designs. The Mint announced the four 2026 designs on October 15, 2025.

State 2026 reverse subject
Iowa Dr. Norman Borlaug
Wisconsin Cray-1 Supercomputer
California Steve Jobs
Minnesota Mobile Refrigeration

The Mint’s 2026 design announcement describes the state designs. The California and Wisconsin subjects represent different parts of computing history: Jobs’s consumer-facing technology and product design, and the Cray-1’s role in high-performance computing.

What the Steve Jobs coin looks like

California’s reverse shows a young Steve Jobs seated before a Northern California landscape, with oak-covered rolling hills behind him. It bears the inscriptions “STEVE JOBS,” “MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL,” “CALIFORNIA” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The Mint frames the landscape as a connection between Jobs’s technology vision and Northern California’s natural environment. The Jobs design is on the reverse, or tails side, as confirmed on the California rolls-and-bags product page.

The coin honors Jobs as an innovator; it is not an Apple-issued product and does not carry Apple branding. The inscription is part of the coin’s design, not a claim that the Mint is issuing an Apple coin.

What the Cray-1 coin looks like

Wisconsin’s reverse depicts a stylized aerial view of the Cray-1. Its circular form suggests a “C,” connecting the shape to Cray-1 and to the word “computer.” The inscriptions include “CRAY-1 SUPERCOMPUTER,” “WISCONSIN” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The Mint identifies the Cray-1 as a system from Cray Research and describes it as a major part of Wisconsin’s technology history and a machine that dominated the supercomputer market during the 1970s and 1980s. More broadly, it was a landmark system and a leading supercomputer of its era—not a modern Cray product.

  • ⭐ PHILADELPHIA MINT — All 2026 President Donald J. Trump $1 coins were struck exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint and do not carry a mint mark. Each coin bears the designer’s “JFM” initials, and rolls may contain a randomly inserted July 4th Privy Mark coin.
  • 🇺🇸 AMERICA’S 250TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE — This historic, one-year-only 2026 $1 coin commemorates the United States Semiquincentennial, celebrating 250 years of American independence from 1776 to 2026.
  • 🦅 HISTORIC TRUMP $1 DESIGN — Features President Donald J. Trump on the obverse and the Presidential Seal on the reverse.
  • 🏛️ ORIGINAL MINT-ISSUED OFFICIAL BANK ROLLS – Obtained directly from the Mint distribution stream and delivered in original unopened Offical Bank Rolls.

The shared obverse and $1 denomination

Both coins use the program’s common obverse: a profile of the Statue of Liberty, “$1,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and a gear-shaped privy mark associated with industry and innovation. The Jobs and Cray-1 designs are on the reverses. The Mint’s American Innovation media kit identifies the obverse features.

These are official U.S. coins with a $1 denomination. That face value is not the same as a collector product’s retail price or its later resale value.

Release dates and product availability

The year does not have one release date for every coin format. The announced sale dates below apply to rolls and bags:

Coin Rolls-and-bags sale began Source
Wisconsin Cray-1 April 7, 2026, at noon EDT Mint-distributed release
California Steve Jobs May 12, 2026, at noon EDT Mint-distributed release

Proofs, uncirculated coins, reverse-proof sets and other products can have different schedules, mint marks and inventory status. A past sale date does not establish that a product is still in stock, permanently sold out or available at its original price. Check the Mint’s American Innovation program page for current listings and product status.

2026 S U.S. Mint 10-Coin Silver Proof Set from the San Francisco Mint - 1776-2026 Semiquincentennial Dated Coins Uncirculated
  • 10-coin collection with S mint mark - Every coin struck at the historic San Francisco Mint
  • 99.9% fine silver - Half dollar, all five quarters, and dime struck in premium silver
  • Lincoln Penny - Numismatic Exclusive - The U.S. Mint officially ended circulating penny production in Fall 2025; this Silver Proof Set is one of the only ways to obtain a 2026 Lincoln cent
  • Two clear plastic lenses - Five Semiquincentennial Quarters in one lens; remaining coins in the second
  • Images are stock photos and represent the product you will receive.

Are they commemorative coins or ordinary change?

They are commemorative in the everyday sense that they honor people and innovations, but formally they belong to the American Innovation $1 Coin Program—not the Mint’s separate commemorative coin program. The latter has its own authorizations and products; the Mint lists the 2026 FIFA World Cup program there, with clad half dollars, silver dollars and gold $5 coins. See the Mint’s commemorative coins page.

The American Innovation coins have legal tender denomination of $1, but the program is primarily numismatic. The Mint sells collector formats such as rolls, bags, proof and uncirculated coins, and reverse-proof sets. A $1 face value does not mean these products will be common in everyday cash transactions, nor does it mean a collector item is worth exactly $1 in the market.

How to buy without confusing the product

  1. Start with the U.S. Mint. Check the official program listing and the specific product page. A listing or reminder option does not guarantee that a product is currently available.
  2. Confirm what is being sold. Distinguish a single coin from a roll, bag or multi-coin set, and check whether the package contains California, Wisconsin or both. Do not assume a proof or reverse-proof set includes both designs without checking its contents.
  3. Check the finish and mint mark. Verify whether the item is proof, uncirculated or another finish, and whether the stated mint mark is Philadelphia, Denver or San Francisco where applicable.
  4. Compare total cost and packaging. Collector products can cost more than their coins’ face value because of their format and presentation. Include shipping and any seller premium in the comparison; original Mint packaging may matter to some collectors.
  5. If shopping secondhand, verify the listing. Confirm quantity, condition, mint mark, packaging, seller terms and whether the coin is raw or professionally graded. Compare the asking price with the Mint’s product information rather than treating a resale listing as a measure of value.

Professional grading is available through services such as PCGS, but grading and encapsulation add cost and are not automatically worthwhile for an inexpensive raw coin. A coin’s condition, any notable error and collector demand affect whether that option makes sense.

What determines collector value?

There is no basis here for calling the coins rare or promising that they will appreciate. A particular coin’s market price can depend on demand, condition, finish, mint mark, packaging and supply. The Mint’s retail price for a set is not the value of one coin, and a seller’s asking price is not proof of what buyers will pay.

For a purchase, decide whether the goal is collecting, gifting, Apple-related memorabilia or technology history. Buying because the subject is popular does not make a coin a reliable investment; resale prices can change, and premiums paid for rolls, bags or sets may not be recovered.

Why the two designs mark different computing stories

The Wisconsin coin points to an era when high-performance computers helped advance scientific and technical work. The California coin turns to Jobs’s influence on consumer technology and the design of products that brought computing closer to everyday users. Their inclusion on separate state coins reflects the program’s state-by-state format, rather than a claim that one machine or company represents the entire history of computing.
