World Liberty Financial is a Trump-family-linked crypto venture with two distinct products in the public record: WLFI, described as a governance token, and USD1, a dollar-referenced stablecoin. Its reach has extended beyond tokens into a large corporate financing deal and a proposed national trust bank. Those developments—and reported income from the venture—have prompted conflict-of-interest concerns from lawmakers and advocacy groups, but their claims are not the same as adjudicated findings.
What is World Liberty Financial?
World Liberty Financial is a crypto business associated with the Trump family. A May 2025 letter from Senator Richard Blumenthal quoted the project’s founding materials describing Donald Trump as “Chief Crypto Advocate” and his sons as “Web3 Ambassador(s).” That wording is the committee letter’s account of the founding document; it does not, by itself, establish the full current corporate structure or the family’s complete financial arrangements.
The project’s scope is best understood through its products and corporate activity. WLFI and USD1 serve different purposes, while a 2025 transaction involving ALT5 Sigma tied the venture to a substantial corporate treasury strategy.
How WLFI and USD1 differ
| Product | What it is described as | What the available materials establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| WLFI | A governance token | World Liberty Financial’s trading page presents WLFI conversion to other crypto assets, including USD1 on Ethereum. | The page alone does not establish the token’s voting rights in practice, investment merit, market value, or a right to redemption. |
| USD1 | A stablecoin referenced to the U.S. dollar | The company says it publishes reserve reports monthly and describes them as being for transparency purposes. | A reserve-report statement does not by itself establish that every holder can redeem at par in all circumstances, or independently guarantee safety. |
The company’s trading page says, “Use $WLFI to convert into other cryptocurrencies and vice versa.” That describes a conversion function, not the economic or legal rights attached to WLFI. A governance label should not be taken as proof of a particular level of control or influence without the applicable token terms.

What the reported USD1 reserve figures show—and do not show
Public Citizen’s August 2026 analysis summarized a KPMG independent accountants’ examination dated July 31, 2026. According to Public Citizen, about $4.6 billion of USD1 was outstanding on June 30, 2026, and reserve assets exceeded that amount by $177,000. On those rounded figures, the reported excess was roughly 0.004% of outstanding USD1. This is a narrowly dated comparison relayed by Public Citizen, not a broad guarantee of redemption, liquidity, or the value of USD1 at a later date.
World Liberty Financial says its reserve reports are published monthly. The figures cited above describe the specific June 30 comparison in Public Citizen’s summary; they do not establish the reserve position on October 3, 2026. A reader assessing USD1 should distinguish the company’s reporting statement from the contents and date of a particular reserve report.

How the venture expanded through ALT5 Sigma
In a release filed as an exhibit with the SEC, ALT5 Sigma Corporation announced that a $1.5 billion registered direct offering and concurrent private placement closed on August 12, 2025. The release described approximately $1.5 billion in gross proceeds before fees and expenses, and said World Liberty Financial was the lead investor in the private placement. It also identified Zach Witkoff as incoming board chair and Eric Trump as a director, and described an intended WLFI treasury strategy.
The release said the registered direct offering was made under an effective SEC registration statement. It said the private placement was unregistered and that any resale in the United States would require registration or an applicable exemption. This was a corporate announcement filed with the SEC; it was not SEC approval or endorsement of World Liberty Financial, WLFI, or the proposed treasury strategy.

What Trump’s financial disclosure reported
In June 2026, the Associated Press reported that Donald Trump’s required annual financial disclosure showed more than $500 million from World Liberty Financial crypto products, including governance tokens. AP described the disclosure form as 927 pages long. The reported amount concerns income from the venture’s products; it does not establish the current value of any remaining holdings or provide a complete accounting of related-party interests.
AP separately reported more than $600 million from sales of meme coins through another Trump crypto business. That is a distinct business and should not be combined with World Liberty Financial’s reported proceeds. AP also said the tokens and coins had plunged in value since sales, which is not the same as a calculation of current net worth or losses on any remaining assets.

Does World Liberty have a bank charter?
Axios reported in August 2026 that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave World Liberty Trust Company preliminary approval for a national trust bank charter. Preliminary approval is not evidence that the proposed company has completed all requirements to open or is operating as a bank.
Axios explained that this kind of trust charter would not authorize ordinary checking or savings deposits and would not provide FDIC-insured deposits. The proposed company’s focus would be stablecoin services, including USD1 issuance and redemption. The available account does not establish final approval or the company’s opening status as of October 3, 2026.

Why lawmakers and watchdogs have raised conflict concerns
A May 6, 2025 letter from Senator Richard Blumenthal to Zach Witkoff raised concerns about family financial interests, token sales, foreign investment, and possible influence. The letter cited project-role descriptions and terms it characterized as potential conflicts. It is a lawmaker’s scrutiny, not a judicial or regulatory finding, and selected claims in the letter do not by themselves verify the complete current ownership or revenue-sharing arrangements among the venture, its affiliates, and family entities.
Public Citizen’s August 2026 analysis also argued that the family’s crypto arrangements and international business relationships create conflicts of interest. Its discussion of USD1 reserves and the proposed OCC charter is advocacy analysis, not an OCC conclusion or an adjudicated determination. Readers should keep three categories separate: what the company says about its products, what corporate filings and financial disclosures report, and what lawmakers or advocacy groups argue those facts mean.
What the public record leaves open
The available reporting establishes a growing set of products, corporate ties, reported income, and regulatory activity, but it does not resolve every question a consumer or voter might ask. The complete current beneficial-ownership and revenue-sharing arrangements have not been established in the sources described here. Nor do the cited charter reports establish the final status or opening conditions of World Liberty Trust Company. For USD1, the specific reserve comparison summarized by Public Citizen is dated June 30, 2026; the company’s statement that it publishes monthly reports does not, by itself, establish a later reserve position.
