Powerball Jackpot: What a $700 Million Winner Could Take Home

A $700 million Powerball jackpot is not a $700 million check. The cash option is lower, both advertised figures are pre-tax, and the current October 3, 2026 estimate is $440 million annuity or $181.3 million cash.

A $700 million Powerball jackpot does not mean a winner receives $700 million in cash. The advertised jackpot is the estimated annuity total, while the winner can instead take a smaller lump-sum cash option; both figures are before taxes. There is also a date issue: USA Mega’s page for the October 3, 2026 drawing displays a current estimate of $440 million annuity or $181.3 million cash, not $700 million. The original drawing date behind the $700 million figure is not established here, so there is no supported cash or take-home estimate for that specific jackpot.

What the $700 million headline does—and does not—tell you

Powerball’s advertised jackpot is the annuity headline, not a promise of a $700 million check. A jackpot winner chooses between a series of payments based on the advertised annuity amount and a one-time cash payment, which is lower. The advertised figures are pre-tax estimates.

The $700 million amount in the headline cannot be matched to the current drawing estimate in the available figures. USA Mega’s page for the Saturday, October 3, 2026 drawing lists $440 million for the annuity and $181.3 million for the cash option. Those are secondary estimates for that drawing, not a recalculation of a separate $700 million jackpot. Because the date and source for the $700 million figure are not established, it would be misleading to use the $181.3 million figure—or invent a cash equivalent—as its payout.

Cash option vs. annuity

Choice How it is paid What the advertised figure means
Cash option One lump sum A lower, pre-tax cash value. Powerball says it is generally the amount needed in the jackpot pool on drawing day to fund the estimated annuity.
Annuity 30 payments over 29 years The advertised jackpot total, before taxes. It consists of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

Powerball notes that advertised jackpot and cash values are estimates until ticket sales close. The annuity amount also remains an estimate until the Multi-State Lottery Association receives bids to purchase securities. See Powerball’s official FAQ for the payout description and estimate qualifications.

How taxes affect a winner’s take-home amount

The IRS requires 24% federal income tax withholding on qualifying gambling winnings, including lottery winnings above the applicable threshold. That is an amount withheld up front, not a guarantee that the winner’s total federal tax will be 24%. The winner reports gambling winnings on Form W-2G when withholding applies, and reports the withheld tax on Form 1040. See the IRS guidance on gambling income and withholding.

A final net estimate also depends on the chosen payout, the winner’s personal tax circumstances, and the state and local tax rules that apply. State treatment is not uniform, so adding a single state-tax percentage to every jackpot would be inaccurate. USA Mega’s 2026 calculator illustrates differences with state-specific examples, including California and New York, but those are estimates under the page’s assumptions, not an individualized tax determination.

What a useful estimate needs

To estimate what a particular winner could keep, first identify the drawing and its official cash and annuity values, then establish the payout choice and the winner’s tax jurisdiction and circumstances. Without those details, the defensible answer is that the advertised jackpot is pre-tax and the actual take-home amount varies—not a universal dollar figure.
