Yes. Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street is based on Jordan Belfort’s 2007 memoir and the real history of Stratton Oakmont, the Long Island brokerage he helped lead. But it is not a documentary: the film’s closing credits say that some characters, incidents, locations and dialogue were fictionalized or invented. The clearest way to separate fact from drama is to distinguish the legal record from Belfort’s retrospective account—and both from the film’s adaptations.

What is the film based on?

Belfort published The Wolf of Wall Street in 2007 as a memoir of his time operating Stratton Oakmont. The 2013 film, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is based on that book. In a 2018 federal court record, the screenplay is described as tracking the memoir’s storyline for the most part.

The real firm at the center of the story was Stratton Oakmont, a Long Island, New York, over-the-counter securities broker-dealer. The court record describes it as infamous and says it faced disciplinary actions and charges involving securities fraud and market manipulation. In a 1999 speech, SEC enforcement director Richard H. Walker also named Jordan Belfort and Daniel Porush of Stratton Oakmont while discussing criminal prosecutions of broker-dealer principals. That establishes the firm’s place in an enforcement context; it does not, by itself, establish every episode the movie depicts.

What is established, and what comes from Belfort’s memoir?

A memoir by a central participant can provide the narrative a film adapts, but it remains that person’s account—especially when it recounts private conversations, motives and dramatic personal episodes. TIME’s 2013 comparison of the film with Belfort’s books and Forbes articles says the movie closely follows the memoir, while cautioning that Belfort glorifies his antics and that parts of his account are debatable. For sensational personal stories, it is more precise to say “Belfort recounts” or “his memoir describes” unless independent corroboration is available.

Keep that distinction separate from what a court or regulator says. For example, Walker’s 1999 SEC speech places Belfort and Porush in a discussion of criminal prosecutions of broker-dealer principals. It is an official source for that limited point, not a substitute for the memoir or a scene-by-scene account of the film.

Why the movie’s characters and scenes are not literal biographies

The film itself signals that it takes dramatic liberties. The court record reproduces its closing-credit disclaimer: “While this story is based on actual events, certain characters, characterizations, incidents, locations and dialogue were fictionalized or invented for purposes of dramatization.” It also notes that some characters use fictional names or are composites.

One example in the court’s account of Greene v. Paramount Pictures Corporation shows why a character should not automatically be read as a one-to-one portrait. Andrew Greene began working at Stratton Oakmont in 1993 and was not a broker. The film’s character Koskoff, by contrast, is hired as a broker when the firm opens in the late 1980s. That difference does not settle every question about the character, but it demonstrates that the film altered biographical details.

How to judge a claim about the “true story”

  • Legal record or regulator: Use these sources for what they specifically document, such as the firm’s identity and the enforcement context.
  • Belfort’s memoir: Treat it as a first-person retrospective account, not independent confirmation of every colorful anecdote.
  • The film: Treat scenes, dialogue and character details as dramatization where the credits or record identify them as fictionalized, combined or invented.

So the film is rooted in a real brokerage and a memoir by its central figure, but those foundations do not make every scene a verified historical event. The adaptation’s own disclaimer—and the documented differences in at least one character’s chronology and job—are reasons to read it as a dramatized account rather than a factual transcript.
