Star Alliance began on May 14, 1997, when Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Thai Airways International, and United Airlines launched a partnership spanning five regions. It was not a merger: each airline kept its own brand and operations while coordinating parts of the journey that could make travel across multiple carriers more connected.
What is Star Alliance?
Star Alliance is a network of separately branded airlines that cooperate so they can offer travelers a broader set of routes and services than any one member could provide alone. The alliance is a coordination framework, not a single airline: a ticket may involve more than one member, but each carrier remains an independent airline.
A 2012 Australian Competition and Consumer Commission regulatory document described Star Alliance as a marketing alliance. It identified coordination such as interlining, codesharing, schedule planning, cooperation at principal hubs to improve connections, reciprocal lounge access, coordinated check-in, and joint marketing. The document also said that members did not share revenue through the alliance. That is a regulator’s description from 2012, not a guarantee that every practice or arrangement is unchanged today.
Who founded Star Alliance, and when did it start?
Star Alliance launched on May 14, 1997, with five founding members:

Star Alliance’s official chronology gives the launch date, and Aegean Airlines’ official 2017 chronology independently names the same five airlines as founders.
How did the alliance grow?
The early history shows a network expanding through member additions rather than one carrier absorbing the others. Selected milestones in the first three years were:

This is an illustrative early sequence, not a complete account of later entrants, departures, airline mergers, or rebrandings. The alliance’s 25th-anniversary statement also shows how it presents its purpose: CEO Jeffrey Goh said in May 2022 that it had united leading global airlines and was focused on keeping the customer at the heart of its work and network. That is the alliance’s own positioning, rather than an independent assessment.
How does Star Alliance work for travelers?
When airlines coordinate, a traveler may be able to connect between members, check in more smoothly, or use certain shared airport services. The experience depends on the itinerary and on the airlines involved; alliance membership does not make every flight, airport, or service identical.

- Connections and schedules: Members coordinate some schedules and hub connections, and may offer interline or codeshare travel. A codeshare flight can be marketed by one carrier and operated by another, so check the operating airline shown in the booking details.
- Frequent-flyer programs: Participating member-airline programs can allow travelers to earn or redeem points across the network. The earning rate, eligible fares, redemption options, and other conditions depend on the specific program and flight.
- Status recognition and airport services: Alliance-level status can bring selected benefits, such as priority services, extra baggage, or lounge access. Eligibility and access depend on status, operating carrier, airport, and current rules.
For a particular trip, confirm the operating carrier, connection details, baggage rules, and loyalty benefits with the airline or frequent-flyer program. The alliance’s flight-search information cautions that schedules can change at short notice.
Which airlines are in Star Alliance?
South African Airways’ current alliance page lists 26 member airlines and describes a network reaching more than 1,150 airports in over 190 countries. Those figures are a page snapshot checked October 8, 2026, not permanent totals:

- Selected status-linked services, including priority handling, additional baggage, or lounge access when eligible.
- Coordinated check-in or other airport arrangements on some multi-carrier journeys.
Before booking, compare the full itinerary and fare conditions, and verify which airline operates each segment. Benefit availability is not universal across every airport, fare, or member combination.
