That is a major shortfall against production cost, but it does not establish the movie’s net loss: ticket sales are shared with theaters, and the comparison excludes marketing, distribution and financing costs. The box-office result also does not prove a John Cena-versus-Dwayne Johnson debate caused the outcome; available reporting does not establish that connection.
How much did The Smashing Machine make?
The Numbers lists the A24 feature’s worldwide theatrical gross at $20,409,324: $11,411,388 in the United States and Canada, and $8,997,936 internationally. It records a $50 million production budget and a U.S. wide release date of October 3, 2025. These figures, accessed October 8, 2026, are database estimates rather than audited studio accounts. The Numbers’ film record provides the detailed figures.

The worldwide gross is about 0.41 times the reported production budget. That ratio is useful for showing the theatrical gap, not for calculating a precise loss or what the studio received. Theatrical gross is not the same as distributor revenue: cinemas retain part of ticket sales, while the budget comparison does not include marketing, distribution or financing costs.
Opening weekend and total gross are different measures
The Numbers lists an opening-weekend gross of $5,841,662. The Associated Press reported the result at the time as roughly $6 million and a third-place finish, based on estimates then available. The rounded contemporary report and the database’s more specific figure describe the same opening, but they are not identical measures of precision. The AP’s October 5, 2025 report also noted the contrast between the opening and the film’s strong reviews.

Why did The Smashing Machine flop?
The commercial result is measurable; no single cause is proven. Industry coverage offered several possible explanations, which should be read as analysis rather than a definitive account of why individual moviegoers stayed away.
A difficult fit between a star image and an indie drama
Dwayne Johnson is widely associated with mainstream action and family-franchise films. TheWrap and Variety both discussed the challenge of selling a comparatively gritty, awards-oriented drama to audiences who may expect a different kind of Johnson movie. That positioning is a plausible factor, not proof that the film’s marketing or tone alone drove its turnout. Variety’s opening-weekend analysis considers the audience expectations and word-of-mouth questions; TheWrap’s report covers audience data and the competing weekend.

- Powerful biographical sports drama based on the life of legendary mixed martial artist Mark Kerr.
- Presented on Blu-ray with high-definition picture quality for an immersive viewing experience.
- Region Free Blu-ray compatible with Blu-ray players worldwide.
- Explores the physical and emotional toll of fame, competition, and personal struggle in professional fighting.
- Ideal for fans of combat sports, biographical films, and intense character-driven dramas.
A crowded weekend, including live sports
TheWrap cited PostTrak figures indicating that the opening audience was 69% male and 64% ages 18–35. It also noted competition from professional and college football, MLB playoffs and a UFC pay-per-view. Analyst Shawn Robbins suggested sports may have kept some viewers at home. That is an attributed theory, not a demonstrated causal finding or a measured count of lost ticket sales.
Festival acclaim did not guarantee broad attendance
The Associated Press reported strong reviews and a 15-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, alongside the modest U.S. opening. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes Johnson’s performance as transformative and the film as a gritty biopic that avoids some genre clichés, while noting a possible cost in narrative satisfaction. That is the aggregator’s consensus, not an individual critic’s review. Neither festival attention nor critical praise guarantees mass-market ticket sales. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page carries the consensus.
Rank #3
- The true story of legendary mixed martial arts and UFC fighter Mark Kerr (Dwayne Johnson), whose obsession with greatness made him a legend and nearly cost him everything. A portrait about ambition, sacrifice and the courage to fight for something greater than victory. SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted Scenes, Commentary with director Benny Safdie.
Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian framed a star’s move into independent work as a career choice: major stars can seek to redefine themselves while trying to occupy both commercial and prestige spaces. That context helps explain why Johnson might pursue a role unlike his familiar blockbusters; it does not establish that the career strategy caused this film’s box-office performance. The AP report includes Dergarabedian’s comments.
Is The Smashing Machine based on a true story?
Yes. The 2025 A24 feature dramatizes the life of mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr, with Johnson starring as Kerr and Emily Blunt also starring. Benny Safdie directed the film. A24’s official page describes it as a story about the MMA and UFC fighter. A24’s film page has the official synopsis.
There is also a 2003 HBO documentary called The Smashing Machine, about Kerr’s MMA career in Vale Tudo, the UFC and Pride. It is a separate work from the 2025 feature, despite sharing its title. Seven Bucks Productions’ project page identifies the earlier documentary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did the movie ignite a John Cena debate?
The available reporting does not substantiate a specific John Cena-versus-Johnson debate sparked by this film, nor does it connect Cena, his comments or one of his projects to the box-office result. Cena’s acting career can be discussed separately from Johnson’s shift into a demanding dramatic role, but treating the two careers as a contest with a winner would require evidence beyond the coverage tied to this movie. A box-office comparison, a dramatic-performance judgment and a television or streaming role are different measures and should not be collapsed into one ranking.
