Forbes’s September 2026 snapshots also estimated Magic Johnson at $1.6 billion and LeBron James at $1.4 billion. These are publisher estimates, not audited personal balance sheets, and they do not establish a reliable, comparable top ten across all basketball players worldwide.
Who is the richest basketball player in the world?
Michael Jordan ranks first among these dated estimates. Forbes’s real-time net-worth snapshot on September 10, 2026, valued him at $4.3 billion. The same publisher’s snapshots put Magic Johnson at $1.6 billion on September 12, 2026, and LeBron James at $1.4 billion on September 12, 2026. Each value is a point-in-time estimate and can change.
| Rank among the profiles with dated estimates | Player | Publisher estimate and date | Wealth context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Michael Jordan | $4.3 billion — Forbes, September 10, 2026 | Forbes says his playing-career salary totaled $90 million and he earned $2.4 billion pre-tax from corporate partners including Nike, Hanes, and Gatorade. He sold his majority ownership in the Charlotte Hornets in 2023 and reportedly retained a minority stake. Forbes profile |
| 2 | Magic Johnson | $1.6 billion — Forbes, September 12, 2026 | Forbes says he earned around $40 million as a Lakers player and built wealth through joint ventures involving movie theaters, Starbucks franchises, real estate, and healthcare. It identifies his 60% stake in EquiTrust as the majority source of his fortune. Forbes profile |
| 3 | LeBron James | $1.4 billion — Forbes, September 12, 2026 | Forbes calls him the first active NBA player to become a billionaire and estimates more than $1 billion in pre-tax off-court earnings from business ventures and endorsements. It notes equity in brands he works with, including Beats by Dre. Forbes profile |
This is a ranking of the three players for whom the cited source supplies a dated September 2026 estimate, not a complete ten-player list. The available figures do not support a defensible, consistently measured top ten worldwide. Publishing seven additional names as if their estimates were directly comparable would imply a certainty the evidence does not establish.
Why a reliable top-ten ranking is difficult
“Basketball players” has a broad scope
A worldwide list could include active and retired players from leagues outside the NBA. A list limited to NBA players answers a narrower question. It also needs a clear rule about deceased players: an estate’s wealth is not automatically equivalent to the personal net worth of a living athlete. Without stated inclusion rules and comparable valuations, “in the world” can suggest broader coverage than a list actually provides.

Different publishers use different estimates
Third-party rankings disagree on figures and ordering. WhoEarns says its figures are estimates unless marked verified and draws on public reporting; its basketball rankings are therefore not interchangeable with Forbes’s individual real-time profiles. Nubia Magazine describes an approach that considers salaries, endorsements, business holdings, real estate, and investments, but a stated estimation method is not the same as audited disclosure. Its 2026 top-ten ranking should be read as a separate publisher’s estimate, not merged with Forbes figures into one uniform table.
Net worth is not the same as salary or career earnings
Net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a particular time. Salary and career earnings measure income, usually before taxes and other expenses. Cumulative gross earnings do not reveal how much remains after taxes, spending, debt, or investment gains and losses.

SalarySport’s active NBA career-earnings page ranks contract value or amounts paid to current players. It can help answer an earnings question, but it does not establish those players’ current net worth. A 2026–27 season figure is also season-sensitive; it should not be placed alongside a billionaire net-worth estimate without labeling the different measures.
How Jordan, Johnson, and James built fortunes beyond playing
Michael Jordan: partnerships and ownership
Forbes’s figures show why Jordan’s fortune cannot be inferred from his NBA salary alone: the publisher reports $90 million in playing-career salary versus $2.4 billion in pre-tax earnings from corporate partners. His former majority ownership of the Charlotte Hornets and reported remaining minority stake add an ownership dimension, though the profile does not make the entire fortune a simple total of publicly disclosed holdings.

Magic Johnson: business ventures and EquiTrust
Johnson’s reported Lakers salary was around $40 million, while Forbes points to ventures across several industries and says his 60% EquiTrust stake is the majority source of his fortune. The contrast illustrates how a retired player’s net worth can depend far more on business interests than on playing income.
LeBron James: endorsements, ventures, and equity
Forbes estimates James has earned more than $1 billion pre-tax off court through endorsements and business ventures. Taking equity in brands he works with, such as Beats by Dre, means his wealth-building sources include ownership as well as endorsement income. His estimate also highlights why “active player” and “salary ranking” are not synonyms for “richest.”

Does “highest paid NBA player” mean richest?
No. “Highest paid” normally asks about income during a specified period, such as a season or year. “Richest” asks about estimated wealth at a point in time. A player can lead a salary list without having the largest net worth, while a retired player can rank among the wealthiest through endorsements, business ownership, and investments accumulated over many years.
For a useful comparison, check the measure, publisher, date, player status, and competition scope attached to each figure. Forbes’s September 2026 snapshots support the ordering of Jordan, Johnson, and James among the three profiles cited here; they do not by themselves verify a global top ten.
