Rob Walton is the richest person associated with an NFL ownership group in the available 2026 estimates. Forbes put his net worth at $132.4 billion on September 15, 2026. That is a personal-wealth estimate, not the value of the Denver Broncos—and Walton transferred the team’s controlling ownership to Greg Penner in 2023.
Richest NFL owners: a dated comparison
The table below reproduces SportsLook’s comparison of Forbes real-time net-worth estimates dated August 9, 2026. It is useful as a snapshot, not as a synchronized ranking for October 8: newer individual Forbes profiles show that some figures have changed.
| Rank in August 9 comparison | Owner or family | NFL team | Estimated net worth | Estimate scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rob Walton and family | Denver Broncos | $133.4 billion | Family estimate |
| 2 | Hunt family | Kansas City Chiefs | $24.8 billion | Family estimate |
| 3 | Stan Kroenke | Los Angeles Rams | $24.3 billion | Individual estimate |
| 4 | David Tepper | Carolina Panthers | $23.7 billion | Individual estimate |
| 5 | Jerry Jones and family | Dallas Cowboys | $19.0 billion | Family estimate |

Why the exact order can change
Net-worth estimates are time-sensitive, and this dated comparison should not be presented as an exact current league-wide ranking. Forbes’ individual profile for David Tepper showed $28.5 billion as of September 11, 2026, compared with $23.7 billion in the August 9 comparison. Forbes’ Rob Walton profile showed $132.4 billion as of September 15, 2026, rather than the table’s August estimate of $133.4 billion. The reviewed sources do not supply one comprehensive, same-date NFL-owner ranking for October 8, 2026.

There is also a scope difference in the Hunt figures. SportsLook’s table puts the Hunt family at $24.8 billion; Forbes’ September 11 profile describes Clark Hunt and his three siblings as Chiefs owners and lists “Clark Hunt & family” at $2 billion. Those estimates appear to use different scope or methodology, so they should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.
Rob Walton’s wealth and the Broncos’ control
Walton’s fortune makes him the clearest answer to “Who is the richest NFL owner?” in these sources, but his connection to the Broncos needs a distinction: Forbes says he transferred controlling ownership to his son-in-law Greg Penner in 2023. Calling Walton the richest person associated with the Broncos ownership group is more precise than implying that he remains the team’s controlling owner.

Personal net worth is not a team’s value
An owner’s estimated personal wealth and a franchise valuation measure different things. Forbes defines its team valuations as enterprise values—equity plus net debt—based on historical transactions and future league and team economics. Its 2026 NFL valuation article puts the Dallas Cowboys at $17 billion and the average NFL team at $9.5 billion. Those are team-value estimates, not Jerry Jones’ personal net worth; the article’s revenue and operating-income estimates refer to the 2025 season.
A transaction price is not automatically an owner’s wealth, either. Forbes reported that a group of Bay Area families bought approximately 6% of the 49ers in May 2025 at a reported franchise valuation above $8.5 billion, while the York family retained control. A minority stake can add investors without changing who controls a team.
Why the Packers do not fit a standard owner ranking
The Green Bay Packers are owned through Green Bay Packers, Inc., a public-shareholder arrangement that predates current NFL ownership rules. Athlon Sports reported more than 538,000 shareholders in 2026. No single shareholder is the conventional controlling owner to rank alongside Walton, Kroenke, or Jones, so the Packers should be excluded from an ordinary individual-owner list.

In September 2025, the Associated Press reported that Julia Koch’s family had agreed to buy a 10% noncontrolling stake in the New York Giants, subject to NFL approval at the time of the report. The Mara and Tisch families were to remain majority owners. That deal illustrates why a wealthy investor’s connection to a team does not by itself establish a place in a ranking of controlling owners—or prove a comparable personal net-worth estimate.
