The 2023 Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture gives a plausible, but limited, basis for reading Frédérique Constant as reaching higher in the luxury-watch market. Its new in-house movement and scarce precious-metal editions point upward; the standard steel model, launched below US$5,000, kept the watch comparatively accessible. One release can suggest a direction, but it does not establish a brand-wide strategy.
What makes this watch notable?
Frédérique Constant introduced the Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture in 2023, its 35th-anniversary year. The watch uses the FC-735, described by the brand as its 31st Manufacture calibre and its first movement to combine a big date, moon phase and power-reserve indication on one dial. The stated power reserve is 50 hours. Frédérique Constant’s launch announcement presents the model as a complicated addition to its classic collection.
The practical detail is how the functions are set. The date, moon phase and power-reserve indication, as well as winding and time setting, are operated through the crown at 3 o’clock. The brand says the movement needs no pushers, correctors or styluses. That arrangement gives a complicated display a relatively straightforward interface, although the launch material does not establish how easy the controls are to use in practice.
How the launch editions differed
The 2023 announcement listed four versions: two steel watches with blue or silver dials, a rose-gold edition limited to 350 pieces, and a platinum edition limited to 35 pieces with a meteorite dial. Time+Tide reported 3 ATM water resistance for the precious-metal versions; the official steel specification lists 5 ATM. The brand’s announcement and Time+Tide’s launch coverage describe the editions and their distinguishing materials.

What the official US prices show now
The official US product pages display different prices for two steel references. The listed specifications are also reference-specific, so the amounts should not be treated as one universal price for every FC-735 or as proof of why prices changed since launch.

Does the FC-735 signal an upmarket move?
Time+Tide framed the release as a sign of the brand going upmarket. That interpretation is understandable: the FC-735 was a newly introduced in-house calibre, and the collection included tightly limited platinum and rose-gold editions at 2023 launch prices far above the steel version. Those choices place part of the line in a more exclusive price and materials bracket.
There is counterevidence to a simple “luxury leap” reading. The steel watches were standard-collection models launched at US$4,995, with restrained classic styling and the same core complications. The crown-operated controls also make the complication set less dependent on extra hardware. The release therefore suggests an effort to reach both an accessible luxury audience and buyers seeking rarer, more expensive materials—not a wholesale repositioning demonstrated by sales, market share or a broader portfolio analysis.

- This Classics Carrée is now being released featuring a quartz movement and a triple calendar
- Day/Date, Moon Phase, Hours, Minutes, Seconds
- Gold-Tone Stainless Steel
- Anti-Reflective Sapphire Crystal
- 30M Water Resistant
For a buyer, the useful distinction is between the watch’s technical proposition and its status proposition. The FC-735’s combination of indications and 50-hour reserve describes the movement; the limited platinum and rose-gold runs describe scarcity and materials. Neither alone establishes resale performance or value for money, and the cited launch coverage does not provide evidence on either.
