The Real Reason to Buy a Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2026: Software Support—at the Right Price

The S23 Ultra still has meaningful update life, but its likely Android 17 endpoint and roughly 2028 security window make price the deciding factor.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra still has meaningful software support left, but it is not a long-term-support bargain at any price. Samsung promised the S23 series four Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The phone launched on Android 13; Samsung’s unlocked U.S. firmware record shows Android 16, so Android 17 is the likely final major upgrade under that policy. Security support is expected to extend roughly into 2028, though Samsung has not published a universal final-patch date for every model and region.

For a 2026 buyer, that makes the S23 Ultra a sensible choice when its S Pen, 10x optical zoom and large high-resolution screen matter—and its price is clearly below newer alternatives. If a newer Galaxy costs the same or less, the newer phone’s longer remaining support may be the better financial decision.

What software does the Galaxy S23 Ultra have now?

Samsung’s firmware record for the unlocked U.S. model SM-S918U1 lists Android 16, One UI 8.5 and a June 5, 2026 Android security patch. That is evidence for this specific firmware channel, not proof that every S23 Ultra worldwide received the same build or patch on the same date. Carrier models and international variants can receive updates on different schedules. Samsung’s U.S. unlocked firmware record identifies the build and its release information.

An international SM-S918B firmware example lists Android 16 with One UI 8.0, illustrating that software versions can differ by model and market. Check your own device at Settings → About phone → Software information. Look at the Android version, One UI version and Android security update date; check the Google Play system update separately. Samsung’s international firmware record is specific to that model and channel.

How many major Android updates remain?

Samsung’s S23-era commitment is four OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The S23 Ultra launched with Android 13 and One UI 5.1. Three major Android generations—14, 15 and 16—have followed in the support path reflected in the current U.S. firmware record.

Support detail S23 Ultra status
Launch software Android 13 / One UI 5.1
Promised major OS upgrades Four, under Samsung’s S23-generation policy
Major upgrades accounted for Android 14, Android 15 and Android 16
Expected final major Android version Android 17, inferred from the four-upgrade commitment; Samsung’s cited policy announcement is not a device-specific final-version confirmation
Security-update commitment Five years; Samsung does not state a universal final patch date for each S23 model and region

Samsung announced the four-generation OS policy for eligible Galaxy devices, and its S23 Ultra specification sheet states four OS updates and five years of security updates. The arithmetic makes Android 17 the expected final major version; treat that as an inference from the policy and Android 13 launch, not as a separately confirmed device-specific announcement. Samsung’s OS-upgrade announcement and S23 Ultra specification sheet.

How long should security updates last?

The five-year security policy points to support into roughly 2028, given the phone’s February 2023 launch. That is a policy-based expectation, not a guarantee of a particular final patch date. Samsung’s security scope explains that eligible devices can follow monthly, quarterly or biannual schedules; it does not mean every S23 Ultra is guaranteed monthly patches until support ends. Check the current model-specific schedule on Samsung’s security-update scope page.

  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.

Keep the three update categories distinct. Android upgrades change the underlying platform; One UI releases add or revise Samsung’s interface and features; security patches address known vulnerabilities. They may arrive together or separately. Being eligible for security support does not promise a new Android version, a monthly patch cadence, unchanged app compatibility for five years, or healthy battery life.

What does “still supported” mean for everyday use?

Updates can reduce exposure to known Android and Samsung vulnerabilities, help preserve compatibility with newer apps, and make the phone easier to resell while it remains within its support window. Those benefits matter for banking apps, password managers and work accounts, but updates do not make a device invulnerable. Account security, app choices, carrier configuration and whether the software has been modified also affect risk.

Support is not feature parity with a newer Galaxy. The S23 Ultra may receive security fixes, bug fixes, One UI improvements and selected Samsung or Galaxy AI features. It should not be assumed to receive every feature introduced on newer hardware. Processor capabilities, camera components, language, region and account eligibility can limit what is available; a new interface release is not a promise that every new feature will appear on this model.

Why the S23 Ultra’s hardware still makes its support useful

Continued updates matter because this is still capable flagship hardware, rather than a phone whose basic performance already undermines its remaining life. Samsung lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, a 200MP main camera, 3x and 10x optical telephoto cameras, a 5,000mAh battery, 45W wired charging, an integrated S Pen, IP68 rating and Samsung DeX support. Regional versions can differ, so check the exact model before buying. Samsung’s S23 Ultra specification sheet.

Those features give the S23 Ultra a distinctive case against newer standard Galaxy models: the integrated pen, long-range optical zoom, expansive high-resolution display and DeX may matter more to a particular buyer than having the newest generation. They do not make the S23 Ultra a better value at every price, and its remaining support is shorter than the runway on newer flagship generations.

Compare remaining support with the actual price

Compare what the phone costs today with how long you expect to keep it, rather than dividing its price by the original support promise. Samsung’s U.S. Certified Re-Newed store showed the S23 Ultra at $659 for 256GB and $739 for 512GB in a captured listing, while a Certified Re-Newed Galaxy S25 appeared at $599. The S25 and S25 Ultra observed prices were captured on Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed comparison page. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document gives the S26 Ultra reference price. Prices, configurations and availability change; these figures show why checking current alternatives is essential, not what a buyer will necessarily pay today.

At those captured prices, the S23 Ultra did not automatically win on software value: a newer S25 appeared for less. A standard newer model may have a longer support runway per dollar, while it may not replace the S23 Ultra’s S Pen, long zoom, large screen or battery capacity. The right comparison depends on which features you will actually use and whether the condition and warranty of the specific unit justify its asking price.

When does buying the S23 Ultra make sense?

Buy it when Ultra hardware is the point

  • You specifically want the integrated S Pen, 10x optical zoom, QHD+ display, DeX or the Ultra camera system.
  • The price is clearly below a newer Galaxy with materially longer support, for the storage and condition you need.
  • You expect a roughly two-year ownership cycle and are comfortable with Android 17 being the likely final major Android update.
  • The unit is unlocked, clean and undamaged, has a healthy battery, and comes with a meaningful return period or warranty.

Prefer a newer Galaxy when longevity is the point

  • The S23 Ultra is close in price to a newer S24, S25 or S26 option.
  • You expect to keep the phone into 2030 or later, or want the longest available support runway.
  • You need newer AI, modem, camera-processing or connectivity features.
  • Battery replacement, screen repair or uncertainty about a used device erases the S23 Ultra’s price advantage.
  • The unit is imported or carrier-tied and you cannot confirm update timing, compatibility or warranty coverage.

Samsung’s later flagship policy is longer than the S23-era four-OS-upgrade and five-year security commitment; consult Samsung’s current security-update scope for eligibility and cadence rather than treating the S23 Ultra as equivalent to a newer Galaxy for longevity. The older phone is most compelling when its particular hardware solves a real need and the discount is large enough to account for its shorter remaining support.

What to check before buying a used or refurbished S23 Ultra

A phone launched in 2023 may have significant battery wear by 2026. Software support cannot compensate for poor battery life or a damaged screen. For a marketplace purchase, a low price can also conceal a carrier lock, financing balance, altered components or software problems.

  • Confirm the exact model number, region, carrier or CSC, and carrier-unlock status.
  • Check Android version, One UI version, Android security patch date and Google Play system update date in Settings.
  • Ask for battery-health information where available and test charging and port function.
  • Inspect the display for burn-in or damage, the camera glass and lenses, and the phone for signs of swelling or impact damage.
  • Confirm the S Pen is included and works; verify the IMEI and that the device is not financing-locked or reported lost.
  • Ask whether the screen or battery is genuine and whether water resistance can still be relied on; repairs can affect it.
  • Look for an unlocked bootloader or modified software, which can affect security and update behavior.
  • Read the return, warranty and refurbishment terms. Certified renewal can offer more predictable recourse than a private sale, but does not make a price competitive by itself.

Samsung’s captured Certified Re-Newed S23 Ultra listing said a charger was not included. Check the live listing’s package contents and terms rather than assuming accessories or coverage. A lower price from a private seller may compensate for weaker recourse, but only if you are willing to accept the additional condition and compatibility risk.
