Waymo’s average fare was still higher than Uber’s in Obi’s latest published paired Bay Area comparison, but the gap had narrowed: Waymo averaged $19.69 versus Uber’s $17.47 for rides observed from November 27, 2025, through January 1, 2026. Obi’s newer March–April 2026 update then reported that Waymo’s average trip price rose faster than Uber’s, but it did not disclose exact paired fares. So the evidence supports a narrowing gap in one defined comparison—not a current, universal price rule.
What the Bay Area fare comparison found
Obi, a commercial fare-comparison company, reported these average fares in its San Francisco Bay Area analyses:

The later comparison covered more than 94,000 simulated ride requests in the Bay Area. Between these two snapshots, Waymo’s average fell while Uber’s rose, bringing their average fares closer together. What the newest update says—and what it does not
Obi’s April 21, 2026 update analyzed San Francisco rides from March 1 through April 14. It reported that average trip prices increased 18% for Waymo and 5% for Uber compared with its preceding study period. The article does not publish the corresponding exact average fares, so those percentages alone cannot establish a new dollar gap or an updated Waymo premium over Uber. Obi’s April 2026 update

That faster increase for Waymo means the newest directional evidence does not simply extend the earlier narrowing trend. It also does not prove the gap widened by a particular amount: the public update gives percentage changes, not the paired dollar figures needed to calculate that. Obi also reported daily Tesla Robotaxi average fares ranging from $8.31 to $14.59, a separate illustration of shifting market conditions rather than a Waymo–Uber comparison.
Why the averages are not a live price comparison
Obi’s later-2025/early-2026 analysis drew on simulated requests. Its newer analysis described organic searches in the Obi app, matched identical pickup and destination pairs, and included UberX, Lyft Standard, Waymo, and Tesla Robotaxi. It processed trips longer than 500 meters and shorter than 50 kilometers. Different measures can also point in different directions. A provider’s average trip price is not the same as its price per mile, and the average can shift when the mix of short and long rides changes. Obi said Uber and Lyft’s average price per mile fell slightly in its newer sample because their ride mix included a larger share of longer trips. Do not treat that as evidence that their average fare fell.
Why your Waymo and Uber quotes can differ
- Demand and timing: Waymo says prices may be higher during busy periods, including nights and weekends. Uber says California fares can reflect supply and demand. Waymo’s rider FAQ and Uber’s U.S. pricing page
- Route and ride type: A quote is specific to the trip and service selected. For a fair comparison, use the same pickup, destination, approximate departure time, and comparable ride category.
- How the displayed fare can change: Waymo says the price is shown before booking, is based on the most direct route, and changes if a rider adds stops. Uber’s U.S. page says that for California rides other than Uber Pool, the displayed price is an estimate; the final fare is based on actual time and distance plus applicable taxes, fees, tolls, surcharges, and supply and demand. Uber notes that its page may not apply in every city, region, or country and may change.
- Pickup time: The lower fare may not be the better choice if the wait is substantially longer. Compare the quoted pickup ETA as well as the fare.
How to compare the cost of a specific ride
- Enter the same origin and destination in both apps.
- Check at roughly the same time and choose comparable ride types.
- Compare the displayed fares and pickup ETAs before booking.
- For a California Uber ride, remember that the displayed amount may be an estimate rather than the final fare; account for any stops or route changes that affect the trip.
A study average cannot tell you what either app will charge for one ride today. The two live quotes are the relevant comparison for your trip, while the pickup ETA helps put a small fare difference in context.

What to take from the price trend
- The strongest published paired figures show a smaller Waymo average premium over Uber in the later-2025/early-2026 Bay Area sample than in Obi’s April 2025 snapshot.
- The April 2026 update reports a faster rise in Waymo’s average trip price than Uber’s, but not exact fares to calculate the new gap.
- Neither result establishes that Waymo is cheaper, or more expensive by a fixed percentage, for every route, time, or market.
