The evidence shows a lasting imprint on Silicon Valley, especially in company building and venture funding, but it does not establish a current investment total or prove that this loose network controls the region.
What does “PayPal Mafia” mean?
The nickname refers to PayPal founders and early employees who went on to start, lead or finance other technology ventures. Fortune traces its popularization to a 2007 story about former colleagues pursuing new projects after PayPal. The label is journalistic shorthand: there is no formal membership, central organization or basis for treating everyone associated with it as part of a coordinated bloc. Fortune’s 2024 retrospective recounts the label and the alumni network.
The story is about former colleagues and the relationships formed around PayPal, not the company’s present-day leadership. Those are separate subjects.
Which later companies show the alumni network’s reach?
Recognizable company names illustrate the network’s reach, but the alumni associated with them had different roles. A founder, an executive and an investor are not interchangeable, and the label does not mean the network collectively created each company.

Fortune’s retrospective and the National Venture Capital Association’s 2026 yearbook provide company and alumni attributions. These examples establish a visible legacy of company building and leadership; they should not be read as a complete roster or as proof that every named person played the same part.
What does the investment record establish?
VentureBeat counted 1,005 investments by PayPal Mafia members and affiliated venture firms into 646 companies from 1995 through June 2018. The figure combines investments made by individuals and affiliated firms over that historical period; it is not a count of investments by individuals alone, a present-day portfolio total, or evidence of how much those investments caused later companies to grow. VentureBeat’s 2018 analysis is the source for this dated snapshot.
That tally is useful as evidence that capital allocation became one channel of alumni influence. It cannot answer how many investments the network has made since June 2018: the cited analysis ends there, and the available sources do not provide a fresh, independent, comprehensive count.
How does the influence continue?
Company building and financing
Alumni have continued to act as founders, executives and investors, extending relationships formed during PayPal’s early years into later ventures. This is the clearest way to understand the network’s lasting business influence: people carried experience and connections into new companies and investment activity, rather than acting through a single institution.

Relationships and founder-centered ideas
A 2025 article in Socio-Economic Review examines network ties among technology entrepreneurs and the spread of ideas that favor strong founder control of companies. It offers a framework for understanding how relationships and governance ideas can travel through Silicon Valley. It is not a census of all PayPal alumni, nor proof that they coordinate or share one political or corporate program. The journal article is best read as analysis of networks and ideas, not a numerical measure of the group’s reach.
Public participation and current activity
Individual alumni also retain public profiles through investment and participation in technology debates. In a 2025 profile, the Associated Press reported on Reid Hoffman’s continued focus on funding AI companies. That is an example of one alumnus’s activity—not evidence that all members share his priorities or that the network speaks with one voice. The Associated Press profile provides that individual example.

These channels support a careful conclusion: the network’s influence persists through people, capital and ideas, but broad claims about political power or control of Silicon Valley need evidence beyond a set of prominent alumni and selected company links.

PayPal itself is a company; the “PayPal Mafia” is a nickname for former colleagues and their later connections. PayPal’s April 2026 proxy statement says Enrique Lores became president and CEO effective March 1, 2026. That corporate leadership fact does not describe or govern the alumni network. PayPal’s 2026 proxy statement documents the appointment.
