Clive Christian calls its jeweled No. 1 Passant Guardant the world’s most expensive perfume, but lists its price as “Price on request”—so the brand claim is not a confirmed current worldwide ranking or proof that a bottle is in stock. Its fragrance is No. 1 Sandalwood. For a clear public-price comparison, Baccarat’s US catalogue lists Rouge 540 Extrait at up to $985 for 200 ml. Those are very different kinds of purchases: one is a quote-only jeweled presentation, the other a listed perfume in several sizes.
What makes a perfume one of the most expensive?
A price ranking can be misleading unless it distinguishes the perfume from its presentation. A high total may reflect the fragrance, a scarce edition, a crystal flacon, precious-metal details, gemstones, or included services. The sources below describe some of those features, but do not say how much each contributes to the price.
- Publicly priced perfume: A brand catalogue displays a price and bottle size, making the listed price easy to compare within that region and at that time.
- Quote-only presentation: A brand asks buyers to request a price. The cost may be exceptional, but without a current quote it cannot be ranked against public prices.
- Historical limited edition: A documented past price can explain a perfume’s reputation, but it is not a current offer.
Clive Christian No. 1 Passant Guardant: a current brand claim, price on request
Clive Christian’s official page describes No. 1 Passant Guardant as “officially recognised as the world’s most expensive perfume.” The same page says “Price on request,” rather than giving a public price. That supports describing it as the brand’s current named candidate, not stating that it is independently verified as the world’s most expensive perfume available for purchase today. Clive Christian’s Passant Guardant page is the route to request a quote.
The page identifies the perfume inside as No. 1 Sandalwood. The presentation is a crystal bottle with handcrafted 24-carat gold latticework and more than 2,000 individually set flawless white diamonds, according to the brand. Clive Christian describes the inspiration this way: “I WAS INSPIRED TO CREATE AN ICONIC BOTTLE AS PRECIOUS AS A CROWN JEWEL.” The source does not break out the value of the fragrance versus the bottle or its materials.

The brand’s US perfume catalogue shows an active catalogue of 42 perfumes, with collections, concentration filters, and bottle volumes. A catalogue does not establish that each product is in stock in every region, and it does not provide a public Passant Guardant price.
Why the famous $205,000 figure is not a current Passant Guardant price
The widely repeated $205,000 amount belongs to a different Clive Christian presentation: No. 1 Imperial Majesty. Guinness World Records says that in November 2005, ten 500 ml bottles were priced at £115,000 each, then equivalent to US$205,000. The price included delivery in a Bentley. Guinness describes the bottle as a Baccarat crystal flacon with a five-carat white diamond and an 18-carat gold collar. Guinness’s record page documents that historical edition; it does not establish a current quote for Passant Guardant.

Guinness also gives £1,317 (then US$2,355) for 30 ml of standard No. 1 in the historical context of its record page. That is not a current price. The standard fragrance, Imperial Majesty limited edition, and Passant Guardant jeweled presentation are distinct products and should not be collapsed into one price claim. Guinness notes that records can change daily and updates may not appear online immediately, another reason not to present its historical figure as a definitive current world ranking.

These are public catalogue prices, not direct equivalents to a quote-only collector presentation with thousands of diamonds. Baccarat’s US fragrance catalogue is the source for these listed products and prices. A product absent from that catalogue extract should not be treated as available today solely because it appears on a third-party list of expensive perfumes.

How to check a high-priced perfume before buying
- Confirm the exact edition. Match the product name and presentation: standard No. 1, the historical Imperial Majesty edition, and Passant Guardant do not share one price or purchase status.
- Ask for the current quote and availability. For Passant Guardant, the brand page gives no public price; request the amount and confirm whether a bottle can currently be supplied.
- Compare like with like. Check bottle volume and concentration as well as price. A total for 200 ml of a publicly listed fragrance is not directly comparable with a quote for an elaborate jeweled flacon.
- Verify the seller and listing details. Check seller authorization, bottle size, concentration, and whether the offer is for the perfume itself or a collector presentation. The cited sources do not verify a current Amazon offer or any particular third-party seller.
- Check region and date. Catalogue prices can differ by country and change over time; the Baccarat figures here are from the US catalogue as observed on 8 October 2026.
