It was a competition car with 1985 Lombard RAC Rally history, not a road-going Sport quattro. This is the leading result in the reviewed records, not a proven worldwide all-time record across every auction and private sale.
What is the most expensive Audi ever sold?
RM Sotheby’s reported a sold price of £1,805,000 for the 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 known as RE10 at its London auction in 2022. The auction record identifies the car by chassis number WAUZZZ85ZGA905010 and Audi Sport internal number RE10. The page gives a final sold figure but does not separately state the hammer price or how fees were treated. RM Sotheby’s lot listing and its sale coverage document the result.
“Most expensive” needs a boundary: this is the strongest result in the RM Sotheby’s records reviewed for this article, not an exhaustive ranking of all auction houses, historic transactions, or private deals. Why RE10 commanded the leading documented result
Works rally history
RM Sotheby’s says RE10 was driven by Hannu Mikkola and co-driver Arnie Hertz at the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally. The Audi led before an engine problem forced it to retire. The car was later used for testing and training for the 1986 Rallye de Portugal and underwent a documented restoration. RM Sotheby’s catalog provides the provenance details.

Scarcity, with the auction house’s qualification
The same catalog states that 20 S1 E2s were built, that 15 are believed to exist, and that four were in private hands when the lot was catalogued. The survival figure is explicitly an estimate, not a definitive census.
Rally cars and road-going Sport quattros are different categories
The S1 E2 was competition machinery. The road-going Sport quattro results in the table are substantial in their own right, but they are not direct like-for-like comparisons with RE10. Their sale prices reflect distinct specifications, provenance, condition, and auction dates. The 2024 Monaco S1 E2 is a useful contrast: it had a separate history, including entry in the 1986 Rallye de Portugal by Walter Röhrl and appearances at the 1989 and 1990 Race of Champions, yet its €635,000 result cannot establish that any single provenance feature predicts value. How to compare headline Audi auction prices
- Keep currencies separate. The results are reported in pounds, dollars, and euros. Comparing their relative value requires an exchange rate and a specific conversion date; no such conversion is made here.
- Check what the figure represents. Use completed sold results rather than estimates or unsold lots. For RE10, the auction page reports the final sold figure without separately identifying hammer price or fee treatment.
- Compare the kind of car. A road-going homologation model, a works-history rally car, and a development prototype have different specifications and collector contexts.
- Read the provenance and condition details. Competition history, restoration, modifications, preservation, service records, and sale venue can all distinguish one example from another. A headline price alone does not isolate the value of any one factor.
What the 2026 prototype result does—and does not—show
RM Sotheby’s reported a $280,000 sale for a 1986 Audi 5000 CS Quattro speed-record development prototype at Monterey in 2026. The auction house explicitly cautions that the car was not the actual record-setting vehicle. Its participation in the program should not be confused with holding the record itself. The listing states that distinction.
