Console hardware fell much faster in two reported quarters: down 32% in Q2 and 33% in Q3. Those are different measures, however—the annual 7% figure covers Xbox overall, not consoles alone.
What “this year” means—and what fell
Microsoft’s fiscal year 2026 ended June 30, 2026, so the annual comparison is FY26, not calendar 2026. Microsoft’s FY26 Form 10-K reports that Xbox revenue declined by $1.7 billion, or 7%, for the year. The filing excerpt reports an overall Xbox result, combining hardware and content and services; it does not establish a full-year percentage decline for hardware alone. Microsoft FY26 Form 10-K
The “cliff” description is more apt for specific quarterly hardware comparisons than for Xbox’s full-year business. Microsoft reported hardware revenue down 32% in Q2 FY26 and 33% in Q3 FY26, year over year. In both cases, Microsoft attributed the decrease to lower console volume sold. These quarter results should not be presented as the annual hardware decline or as unit-sales percentages. Microsoft Q2 FY26 results Microsoft Q3 FY26 results
Hardware and content revenue tell different stories
| Measure | Reported change | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox overall revenue, FY26 | Down $1.7 billion, or 7%, for the fiscal year, according to Microsoft’s FY26 Form 10-K | Xbox business overall; not a hardware-only figure |
| Xbox hardware revenue, Q2 FY26 | Down 32% year over year, according to Microsoft’s Q2 results | Hardware; Microsoft cited lower console volume sold |
| Xbox hardware revenue, Q3 FY26 | Down 33% year over year, according to Microsoft’s Q3 results | Hardware; Microsoft cited lower console volume sold |
| Xbox content and services revenue, Q4 FY26 | Down 10% year over year, according to Microsoft’s Q4 results | First- and third-party content, Game Pass and other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising, and other cloud services |
The Q4 content-and-services decrease is not a Q4 hardware result. Microsoft’s investor metrics define content and services broadly, so it should not be treated as a proxy for console sales. Nor should Microsoft’s broader More Personal Computing segment revenue be substituted for Xbox revenue: that segment includes other businesses. Microsoft FY26 Q4 earnings release and investor metrics

What Microsoft says was behind the hardware pressure
Microsoft linked the Q2 and Q3 hardware declines to lower console volume sold, but the reported percentages do not quantify units or prove why fewer consoles sold. They also do not establish that pricing, game releases, competition, or component supply independently caused the full-year Xbox revenue decline.
In a June 10, 2026 memo to Team Xbox employees globally, Xbox leaders Asha Sharma and Matt said the company could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy. They also described rising component costs and supply constraints, and said Xbox believed it had been more affected than many peers because of choices made over the previous half decade. That is management’s explanation, not an independently verified breakdown of the annual revenue change.

“We are currently unable to make as many consoles as players want to buy, and we need a new business model and partnerships for hardware as we remain committed to Helix.”
The memo also said the price Xbox paid for console storage components was more than twice the price paid the previous fall and had doubled again, and projected a further increase by the 2027 holiday season. These are Xbox leadership’s statements and projection, not a third-party component-price index. Xbox Wire leadership memo, June 10, 2026

Why the revenue decline does not settle Xbox’s audience outlook
In the same memo, Xbox leadership reported more than 1 billion players and 72 billion hours across console, PC, mobile, and streaming. The figures were company-reported and excluded much of China and some other properties; the memo does not describe them as independently audited audience measures. They cover more than console users, so they do not contradict the reported fall in console hardware revenue or reveal how many consoles were sold.
For readers assessing the business, the useful distinction is between the money Microsoft reports from Xbox overall, the sharper quarterly movement in hardware, and the separate content-and-services stream. The published figures document declines in all three categories mentioned here, but they do not provide a single, fully quantified explanation for the annual result.
