The Microsoft Rewards punch card discussed in the Reddit post was easy to misunderstand: broad searches often failed, while searches matching a specific intent—such as a named restaurant, movie, product, or flight destination—were more likely to count. The offer expired on February 29, 2024, but its lesson remains useful for anyone evaluating Rewards tasks today.
What the Reddit post was warning about
The February 2024 Microsoft Rewards punch card was not a normal “search anything” promotion. Each task expected a particular kind of search, and the wording was vague enough that many users completed what seemed like reasonable searches without receiving credit.
The original r/MicrosoftRewards post explained the important detail: the Bing searches had to be context-sensitive. For example, searching broadly for “restaurants near me” might not trigger the restaurant task, while searching for the name of a specific nearby restaurant could.
That offer ended on February 29, 2024, so it is no longer an active way to earn points. The useful lesson still applies to similar Rewards activities: read the task literally, start it from the card, and check that each punch registers before moving on.

The four searches that caused confusion
Users in the thread described a card with four types of searches:
| Task type | What users reported working | Why it was confusing |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping | A product search containing a word such as “new,” including examples like “new pants” or “toilet paper” | A generic product search, such as “headphones,” did not work reliably for everyone |
| Movie night | A film title such as The Batman or Barbie | Searching for movies, theaters, or showtimes did not always trigger the punch |
| Restaurant | The name of a specific restaurant, sometimes with a location—for example, “McDonald’s” or “Greek restaurant Athens” | A general query such as “restaurants near me” was not consistently recognized |
| Travel | A flight-style query such as “flight to Italy” | The card’s natural-language wording did not clearly reveal the search format Bing expected |
These examples came from users’ reports, not from a permanent Microsoft formula. They should be treated as troubleshooting clues for that particular card—not as guaranteed searches for a future promotion.
Why a perfectly sensible search could fail
A punch card is a tracking offer layered on top of Bing activity. The search may earn ordinary Rewards points while still failing to satisfy the separate punch-card condition. Microsoft does not publish a universal list of every phrase that qualifies.
In this case, the card appears to have been looking for intent: a named business, a movie title, a shopping-related phrase, or a travel request. That explains why a user could search for a nearby restaurant and still see no progress. The query may have been reasonable to a human but too general for the promotion’s tracking rule.

There was also a second source of frustration: some users reported that the card did not update immediately or worked in one browser but not another. That does not prove that every failed attempt was a technical bug. It means the card’s eligibility logic, account state, region, browser session, and search wording could all matter.
How to handle a Microsoft Rewards punch card
- Open the card from your Rewards dashboard. Sign in at the Microsoft Rewards dashboard and read every task and deadline. Offers vary by country and account.
- Activate the task first. Use the card’s “Start,” “Search,” or equivalent button before entering the query. Do not assume that an unrelated Bing search will be attached to the promotion.
- Match the intent, not just one keyword. If the task asks about a restaurant, search for a specific restaurant. If it asks about travel, use a destination-based flight query. If it asks about a movie, search for a specific film title.
- Use an ordinary, natural query. Avoid repeating meaningless strings or running automated searches. Microsoft says searches generated by bots, macros, or other automated methods may not earn points.
- Wait for the punch to register. Refresh the dashboard or return to the card after each step. If the card still shows incomplete, do not keep spending time or money until you know the activity is tracking.
- Save evidence if the offer matters. Take a screenshot showing the card, deadline, and completed steps. This is useful if you need to contact Rewards Support.
What to do when the card does not count
First check the basics:
- You are signed in to the Microsoft account attached to your Rewards balance.
- The card is still available in your country or region and has not expired.
- You started the activity through the card rather than from an unrelated tab.
- Your device, browser, and Rewards dashboard are using the same account session.
- You have not reached a daily search limit.
- You are not using a VPN, proxy, or location-changing service.
Microsoft’s current support guidance says that earning opportunities and daily limits vary by country or region. It also lists account mismatch, browser synchronization problems, maximum search counters, automated queries, and attempts to earn from another market as reasons activity may not be credited. See Microsoft’s Rewards guidance and official earning guide for the current rules.
If the task remains incomplete, try one normal query that closely matches the wording, refresh once, and then stop. Repeating dozens of searches is usually a poor personal-finance trade: the time cost can exceed the value of the points, and aggressive or artificial activity can create account problems.
The money lesson: value the time, not just the points
Microsoft says Rewards points have no cash value and that it usually takes about 5,000 points to redeem something worth $5, although redemption values and offers vary. That makes a small punch-card bonus worth only a few cents or dollars, depending on the promotion.

Use an hourly-value test. If a card offers 150 points, it is roughly 15 cents at Microsoft’s stated 5,000-points-for-$5 example. If troubleshooting takes 20 minutes, the implied return is less than 50 cents per hour before considering privacy, device use, or the risk of wasting time on an expired offer. A large bonus may justify more effort; a tiny bonus usually does not.
Never buy a game, movie, subscription, or other product solely to complete a punch card unless the purchase already fits your budget and plans. A “bonus” that requires unnecessary spending is a discount only if the underlying purchase is worthwhile without the points.
Important current-account cautions
Rewards availability is regional. Microsoft advises redeeming in the same region where the account was registered and specifically warns against VPN use during redemption. Gift cards can also disappear or go out of stock.
Microsoft’s support pages say points can expire after 12 months without earning activity. Check the current dashboard rather than relying on an old Reddit link, screenshot, or remembered point value. The program has changed repeatedly, and an old punch-card URL may simply redirect to the main Rewards page.

The practical takeaway from the Reddit post is simple: the user was not “stupid.” The promotion was not intuitive. For future cards, treat the wording as a technical requirement, verify the green check or completed status after every step, and abandon the task when the time required is disproportionate to the reward.

Is this Microsoft Rewards punch card still available?
No. The punch card discussed in the Reddit thread ended on February 29, 2024. Similar cards may appear later, but their tasks, points, deadlines, and eligibility can differ by account and region.
What should I do if a Microsoft Rewards punch card does not register?
Try a specific query matching the task’s intent, confirm you started from the card, refresh once, and check your account, region, daily limit, browser session, VPN, and automation settings. If it still fails, contact Microsoft Rewards Support rather than repeating searches indefinitely.
Do the Reddit search examples work for every Rewards user?
No. Microsoft’s official guidance says offers, earning rates, limits, and available rewards vary by country or region. A phrase that worked for one user may not work for another account or a later promotion.

Are Microsoft Rewards punch cards worth doing?
Microsoft says Rewards points have no cash value and gives about 5,000 points for a $5 redemption as a general example. Actual value varies, so do not spend money or significant time solely to complete a small punch card.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The punch card discussed in the Reddit thread was an expired February 2024 offer that required specific, intent-matching Bing searches. Searching for a named restaurant, movie, product, or destination worked better than using broad category searches, but those examples are not guaranteed for current cards.
For any Microsoft Rewards promotion, activate it from the dashboard, use normal searches, avoid VPNs and automation, confirm each punch registers, and compare the points’ real value with the time or money required.
