Samsung Electronics’ preliminary third-quarter 2026 figures were far above a year earlier, but they came in below the consensus estimates cited by market reporters. Memory and storage stocks fell on that gap, not on a collapse in reported demand. The shortfall is modest, the numbers are preliminary, and the reaction is a single session’s repricing of high expectations.
Why the stocks fell
Investors had built up high expectations for Samsung’s memory business, and the preliminary headline numbers landed below what analysts expected. The Yahoo Finance report by Aaron McDade, which cited Visible Alpha estimates, described the result as a consensus miss and said related memory and storage shares declined. The reaction was a repricing against expectations, not a verdict that AI-driven memory demand has peaked.
Samsung’s preliminary figures against consensus
Samsung published its preliminary third-quarter estimates on October 8, 2026. They are provided under K-IFRS before the close of accounts, and Samsung’s Korean release says the company offers them for investor convenience. Final audited results and the full segment breakdown come later. The Visible Alpha figures are the consensus as quoted by the Yahoo Finance report; they were not checked against Visible Alpha directly.
| Measure (consolidated, KRW) | Samsung preliminary Q3 2026 | Visible Alpha consensus, as quoted | Gap (calculated from the two figures) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 195 trillion | 205.26 trillion | About 10.3 trillion below, roughly 5% short |
| Operating profit | 107.40 trillion | 112.73 trillion | About 5.3 trillion below, roughly 4.7% short |
The sales and operating-profit figures sit below consensus by similar margins. Samsung’s release described the preliminary numbers as sharply above the prior-year period. The sources cited here do not give a prior-year figure, so this article does not quote one.

Context: the second quarter and Samsung’s memory outlook
The preliminary third quarter follows a strong second quarter. Samsung reported consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion for Q2 2026, and said its Memory Business also posted record quarterly revenue and operating profit. Measured against Q2, the preliminary Q3 figures imply revenue growth of about 14% and operating-profit growth of about 20%. Those percentages are our calculations from the two Samsung figures.
| Measure (consolidated, KRW) | Q2 2026 (reported) | Q3 2026 (preliminary) | Change (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 171.5 trillion | 195 trillion | About +14% |
| Operating profit | 89.5 trillion | 107.40 trillion | About +20% |
In its July 30, 2026 release, Samsung said the Memory Business addressed AI demand despite limited capacity, with a primary focus on server products. Its official Q2 wording reads: “The Memory Business achieved another record-breaking quarter by proactively addressing AI demand despite limited capacity with a primary focus on server products.” Samsung also said server sales made up a record share of its memory sales mix.

For the second half of 2026, Samsung expected robust server-centred demand, with growth in server DRAM, enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) accelerating. It expected partial demand moderation in mobile and PCs, and it said supply constraints would persist despite production-increase efforts. These are management expectations, not independent forecasts.

A move of this size reflects one session’s reaction to a result that fell short of expectations. It says nothing about whether those companies’ order books or pricing have changed.

The fair reading is that a strong quarter was priced at a level that a slightly weaker preliminary print could not meet. Samsung’s own outlook still described tight supply and strong server demand. The sources support that tension, but they do not establish a causal chain from the preliminary miss to each share move.

Several points limit how far the result can be pushed:
- The release is preliminary. Samsung’s segment-level detail and the final results may differ from the headline estimates.
- The consensus figures are as quoted by one report. A different consensus set would change the size of the gap.
- Samsung’s outlook is management’s view. It is not a third-party forecast of memory prices or volumes.
- The price moves are approximate and come from one report’s description.
