Short answer: The deal was real when Tom’s Guide reported it on March 20, 2026, but it is not confirmed as an active August promotion. The offer was from Verizon and advertised an iPhone 17e and iPhone 17 Pro for free through qualifying monthly bill credits, plus up to $1,200 off an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Checked August 18, 2026: the original article does not establish that those exact terms are still available, so verify the offer in Verizon checkout before switching, adding a line, or paying any fees.
Tom’s Guide’s original article should be treated as a report of a March deal—not proof of a live promotion today.

What the original iPhone 17 deal offered
The March 20 Verizon promotion described in the headline had three headline discounts:
| Model | Advertised March offer | Main qualification described | August status |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | Free | New line and eligible unlimited plan | Not independently confirmed as still active |
| iPhone 17 Pro | Free | New line and selected qualifying plan | Not independently confirmed as still active |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to $1,200 off | New line and eligible data plan | Not independently confirmed as still active |
The “up to” language matters. The maximum Pro Max discount could depend on the exact storage configuration, plan, trade-in, line status, and credit schedule. The original coverage also used slightly inconsistent wording about the iPhone 17 Pro’s plan requirement, so the safest description is: the phone was advertised as free through qualifying monthly bill credits with an eligible Verizon line and plan.

Is Verizon’s sale still live?
Carrier promotions frequently expire, change their eligibility rules, become limited to particular colors or storage capacities, or get replaced without the old headline being updated. A March 20 article’s “happening right now” wording was time-specific; it should not be read as an August 2026 guarantee.
To check the current offer, go to Verizon and select each model separately. Add the desired phone to your cart without completing checkout. The discount should remain visible after you select the line type, plan, storage, color, trade-in option, and financing terms. If the advertised credit disappears at any stage, the headline offer does not apply to that configuration.
Before submitting an order, save the offer details or a screenshot showing:
- the device price and monthly payment;
- the required Verizon plan;
- whether the offer requires a new line, a port-in, an upgrade, or a trade-in;
- the length and amount of the monthly bill credits;
- taxes and activation or upgrade fees;
- the consequences of cancelling service, changing plans, or paying off the phone early;
- the device’s lock policy; and
- storage, color, and geographic availability.
What “free iPhone” really means
A carrier’s “free” phone generally is not free at checkout. You typically finance the device, then receive monthly promotional credits that offset the device payments. You remain responsible for the wireless service and commonly for taxes, activation charges, and other fees.
Those credits usually depend on maintaining the qualifying line and plan for the full promotional period. Cancelling the line, transferring it, switching to an ineligible plan, or otherwise ending the promotion can stop future credits. You may then owe the remaining device balance. Paying off the phone early can also affect future credits, depending on the specific terms.
These are the mechanics readers should expect from a bill-credit promotion, not confirmed August terms for this particular Verizon offer. Read the current offer agreement before ordering.

A “new line” requirement is another major limitation. An existing Verizon customer may not qualify through a normal upgrade, while a new customer may need to port in a number or add a line. Adding a line solely to obtain a discounted phone can cost more than buying the phone outright, especially on a family plan.

As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. buying page listed these starting prices:
| Model | Apple starting price | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | $599 | Unlocked purchase with no Verizon bill-credit commitment |
| iPhone 17 | $799 | Mainstream unlocked option |
| iPhone Air | $999 | Unlocked alternative in Apple’s current lineup |
| iPhone 17 Pro | $1,099 | Unlocked premium option |
See Apple’s official iPhone buying page for current pricing and configurations. Prices and availability can change.
Apple purchases are generally unlocked. Apple also says iPhones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon may remain carrier-locked until paid in full. U.S. iPhone 17-series models purchased from Apple use eSIM rather than a physical SIM tray, so confirm that your carrier supports eSIM if you need to move service. Apple also offers free online Personal Setup sessions for buyers who need help transferring data.
Which iPhone 17 model makes sense?
iPhone 17e: the budget choice
The iPhone 17e starts at $599 and includes a 6.1-inch display, A19 chip, 256GB of base storage, a 48MP Fusion camera system, up to 26 hours of video playback, and a 12MP TrueDepth front camera. It does not include Camera Control.
Choose it if price, storage, and everyday performance matter more than advanced cameras or display features. A carrier “free” offer can make it especially compelling for someone already planning to keep an eligible Verizon line for the entire credit period.

iPhone 17: the mainstream value pick
The $799 iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch display, A19 chip, ProMotion, an Always-On display, Camera Control, a dual 48MP Fusion camera system, and up to 30 hours of video playback.
It is the likely sweet spot for buyers who want the richer display and camera experience but do not need the Pro models’ camera system. Compare its unlocked price with the cost of the Verizon plan rather than assuming the carrier offer is automatically cheaper.
iPhone 17 Pro: the dramatic headline deal
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 and adds an A19 Pro chip, ProMotion and Always-On display, a three-camera 48MP Pro Fusion system, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, and up to 39 hours of video playback.
Because the unlocked price is high, a genuinely qualifying “free after credits” offer sounds particularly attractive. It is also the model for which plan requirements, credit duration, new-line rules, trade-in conditions, and cancellation consequences deserve the closest scrutiny.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: verify the maximum discount
The original article described the 6.9-inch Pro Max as eligible for up to $1,200 off. It did not establish the August configuration, credit duration, or exact eligibility requirements. Do not assume every Pro Max model receives the maximum discount.

The Verizon route may produce the lowest device cost if you:
Rank #4
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- are already planning to remain on an eligible Verizon unlimited plan;
- are adding a genuinely needed line;
- can keep the line active for the full credit period;
- do not need immediate carrier flexibility; and
- have confirmed the exact credit and fee terms in checkout.
In that situation, the phone credits may outweigh the cost of buying the device from Apple.

Apple is usually the cleaner choice if you may switch carriers, travel internationally, want to sell the phone freely, or dislike long bill-credit commitments. It is also worth considering if the Verizon plan required for the promotion costs substantially more than your current plan.
For a fair comparison, calculate:
Total carrier cost = device payments after credits + required service cost + taxes + activation or upgrade fees + trade-in cost or lost resale value
Then compare it with:
Unlocked cost = Apple or retailer purchase price + your existing or alternative wireless plan
The relevant comparison is not “$0 phone versus $1,099 phone.” It is the total cost of maintaining the carrier arrangement over the entire promotional period.
Important situations that can change the math
- Existing Verizon customers: A new-line promotion may not apply to a normal upgrade.
- Switchers: The deal may require porting in a number, not merely opening an account.
- Family plans: The additional monthly line cost can erase the device savings.
- Trade-ins: A cracked, blacklisted, unpaid, or damaged phone may receive reduced value or fail eligibility.
- Early cancellation: Future credits may stop, leaving a device balance due.
- Plan changes: Downgrading can invalidate the promotion.
- International use: A financed or locked phone may be less convenient for travel or another carrier.
- eSIM-only models: Confirm eSIM support before moving from an older physical-SIM phone.
- Inventory: The cheapest configuration may not be available in your preferred color or capacity.
- Upfront charges: “Free” does not mean zero dollars due at checkout.
Bottom line for shoppers
The iPhone 17 sale headline described a real Verizon promotion on March 20, 2026, but the available evidence does not confirm that the same offer was still active on August 18. Treat it as a historical deal until Verizon’s current checkout shows the discount, requirements, and full terms.
If you already want Verizon service and will stay for the full bill-credit period, the offer could be an excellent device deal. If you want flexibility—or would add an expensive line just to obtain a “free” phone—compare the full cost with Apple’s unlocked prices before committing.
