On an even-money bet, a win after a losing streak can recover the earlier losses and leave a small profit—but it does not improve the odds of the next bet or guarantee profit. In roulette, the house edge remains, while the required stakes can grow beyond a player’s bankroll or a casino’s table limit.
How the Martingale system works
In the classic gambling version, a player starts with a stake and doubles it after every loss, usually on an even-money bet such as red or black in roulette. The idea is that the next win pays enough to cover the losses from the sequence and leave a profit equal to the original stake.
- Start: Bet $1 on red.
- After a loss: Bet $2 on red.
- After another loss: Bet $4, then $8, and continue doubling after each loss.
- After a win: The winning even-money wager returns the amount staked as profit, while the stake itself is returned. After accounting for earlier losses, the sequence nets $1.
This recovery arithmetic assumes the player can keep doubling and continue betting until a win. It describes the gambling progression, not the broader mathematical term “martingale.”
How quickly the stakes and potential losses grow
With a $1 starting wager, the stake after n consecutive losses is 2n dollars. The amount already lost over those n wagers is 2n − 1 dollars.

The $8,192 figure is the next stake after 13 consecutive $1-starting wagers have lost; the player would already have staked and lost $8,191. If that recovery wager also loses, the loss increases again and the next required stake doubles. These figures illustrate the progression, not a typical or universal losing streak.
Roulette odds do not improve after losses
Each roulette spin is independent: previous results do not make red or black more likely on the next spin. A run of black results does not mean the wheel owes players a red result. Changing bet size changes how much is at risk, not the pockets on which the wager wins.

For the roulette formats described in a 2018 Significance analysis, the even-money bet odds differ by wheel:

Those percentages apply to the stated wheel formats and even-money bets; roulette variants and rules can differ. The same analysis explains that a progression does not remove the house edge: the casino’s expected share is based on the game’s rules and the amount wagered, not on whether the player raises stakes after losing.

Why a high chance of a small win can hide a large loss
Martingale can make many short sessions end with a small gain because one win may offset several earlier losses. But a losing streak can consume all the accumulated gains and more. The session win rate alone does not show the size of the losses when the sequence fails.
A simple fair-coin example from Scientific American makes the trade-off clear. With $7, a player can place $1, $2, and $4 wagers:

- In 7 of 8 possible outcome sequences, a win arrives before all three wagers lose, producing a net gain of $1.
- In 1 of 8 sequences, all three wagers lose, for a net loss of $7.
The expected profit in this simplified fair-coin game is zero: (7/8 × $1) + (1/8 × −$7) = $0. Roulette is less favorable to the player because its even-money bets carry a house edge.
A 2019 presentation record by Peter Pflaumer, “A Statistical Analysis of the Roulette Martingale System: Examples, Formulas and Simulations with R,” reports a nearly 98% chance of winning after 20 Martingale rounds under the presentation’s assumptions. That is a scenario-specific result, not a general probability for roulette players: the outcome depends on the wheel, bet, stopping rule, bankroll, and table maximum. The record also notes that the comparatively small profit is offset by the possibility of a very large loss.

Why real-world limits break the progression
The theoretical system depends on being able to place every larger wager until a win. In practice, a player has finite money, and a casino table has a maximum stake. Either can stop the sequence before a recovery win. The next wager may be unaffordable, exceed the table limit, or leave too little money to continue.
Flat betting—keeping the stake the same—does not create the same rapidly escalating exposure, although it also does not remove roulette’s house edge. A UNLV repository summary of Pflaumer’s analysis describes Martingale play as riskier than constant-sized betting on simple-chance bets: its greater chance of a short-term positive result comes with potentially much greater losses. There is no single universal risk estimate for every bankroll and table limit.
For historical context, J. Andrew Archer’s 1976 article, “The Odds Meet the Great Martingale,” analyzes the roulette progression and the roles of casino defenses and table limits. Its discussion is tied to the rules considered in that article; it does not establish current casino limits. A 1979 USPS Judicial Officer decision also describes the basic doubling procedure, but is not evidence of current gambling regulations or operating practices.
