James Howells’ 2025 proposal to buy a landfill and search for a hard drive he says was discarded there never became a reported purchase or excavation. By August 2025, he had stopped pursuing both, according to later coverage. The story is about an inaccessible Bitcoin wallet—not coins buried in rubbish—and the often-repeated $700 million figure is a dated estimate, not a current or guaranteed recovery value.
What happened to the Bitcoin?
James Howells, a computer engineer from Newport, Wales, says a hard drive associated with his Bitcoin wallet was mistakenly thrown away by his then-partner in 2013 and ended up at Docksway landfill. News reports attribute the account to Howells; the disposal circumstances have not been independently established in the sources cited here. The drive’s make and model have not been identified.
Howells has said the wallet held 8,000 Bitcoin. The device itself would not contain physical coins: it would provide access to wallet information needed to control the Bitcoin recorded on the network. Without the necessary credentials or recovery information, finding a drive alone would not automatically prove that its contents remain readable or make the Bitcoin spendable.
Why did he want to buy the landfill?
After seeking permission to search Docksway, Howells turned to a proposed purchase. In February 2025, he said he was considering buying the site as council plans to close it prompted questions about future access. Coverage described a search area smaller than the whole landfill. That was a proposal, not evidence that a sale, excavation, or recovery took place. Sky News reported on the proposed purchase.

The idea faced practical constraints beyond locating one device: landfill waste is extensive, and excavation would involve access, environmental and site-management issues. The Register cited a waste-industry expert’s comparison that about 100,000 tonnes of waste would weigh as much as more than 82 million hard drives weighing 700 grams each. That analogy illustrates scale; it does not estimate the probability of finding this particular drive or establish where it is.
What happened in court?
News reports said a judge dismissed Howells’s case against Newport City Council in January 2025. Coverage described the dispute as involving access to search and compensation; ITV News Wales reported a claimed compensation figure of £495 million. That was a claim amount, not a court award. The underlying judgment is not cited here, so the legal outcome should be understood at the level reported by news outlets. ITV News Wales covered the reported ruling.

Is he still trying to excavate the site?
As of August 2025, The Block reported that Howells was no longer pursuing excavation or buying the landfill and had considered tokenizing a legal claim instead. That later direction was also a reported idea, not proof that a token was issued or that the Bitcoin was recovered. The Block reported the change in approach.
The status of Docksway’s operations or any redevelopment could not be confirmed from an official source here. Closure or capping plans reported in 2025 should not be treated as proof those events were completed.

What does “$700 million in Bitcoin” mean?
It is headline shorthand for a market-dependent valuation of the 8,000 BTC Howells says were in the wallet. Outlets used different dated currency conversions: Sky News used £600 million in its 11 February 2025 headline, while The Irish Times used €750 million. These figures are not interchangeable current appraisals, and neither accounts for whether the drive can be found, read, or used to regain access. The Irish Times used the €750 million headline valuation.
No independently published statistical study establishing the chance of finding or recovering the drive is identified in the cited coverage. A precise recovery probability would require assumptions about its location, the waste’s movement and condition, and the drive’s survival; a dramatic comparison or headline figure cannot supply that probability.

What can Bitcoin holders take from the story?
The useful lesson is about preserving access, not buying a particular device. Keep more than one backup of wallet recovery information, store backups separately, and make sure trusted instructions explain how to use them without exposing credentials. An external hard drive can be one backup medium, but it should not be the only copy. Howells’s reported setup is not evidence that a modern replacement drive could restore his wallet.
