The Leisure Economy: Can You Get Paid to Play Games?

The leisure economy describes work around games, not automatic pay for playing. See what esports, creator and virtual-world examples from 2018 do—and do not—prove.

Some people do earn money through gaming, but that does not mean ordinary play pays—or that a gaming-related career is a dependable way to make a living. “The leisure economy” is an umbrella for work built around games: competing, creating content, supporting communities, and selling virtual goods. The idea appeared in a 2018 GamesBeat panel account; its examples show possible paths, not typical earnings or a guarantee of work.

What “the leisure economy” means

Dean Takahashi used “the leisure economy” to describe ways people might earn money from activities associated with games. The phrase is broader than being paid simply to play: it includes professional competition, video and livestream production, influencing, modding, cosplay, and work around virtual worlds.

The concept was discussed at GamesBeat Summit 2018 in a panel moderated by Adam Sessler, then cofounder of Spiketrap. The listed panelists were Jon “Neverdie” Jacobs of Neverdie Studios, Gio Hunt of Blizzard Entertainment, Philip Rosedale of High Fidelity, and Craig Donato of Roblox. Their comments describe views and examples from that period, not a current survey of jobs or earnings. Read Takahashi’s GamesBeat article.

Gaming-related work takes different forms

These paths require different work and ways to earn. The 2018 article does not give comparable earnings data, so the categories should not be read as equally accessible or equally likely to support a living.

Path Work performed Possible compensation described or implied What the 2018 account establishes
Esports athlete Compete in organized video-game events and build an audience. Competition prizes and opportunities connected to audiences; the article does not quantify either. Hunt linked growing esports audiences with new ways to make money inside and outside games. No typical income or career odds are given.
Cosplayer Create and present costumes and related work for a game audience. The article names cosplay as a gaming-related activity but does not specify a compensation model. It identifies a possible work type, not evidence of typical paid demand.
Influencer, YouTuber, or livestreamer Make videos or live content, cultivate an audience, and maintain a presence on a platform. Creator or platform revenue is a possible model; the article supplies no terms, rates, or earnings data. These roles are named as examples. A platform’s current eligibility and monetization rules are not established by the 2018 account.
Modder or virtual-world creator Build modifications, experiences, or goods that people use in a game or virtual world. Potentially virtual currency or sales, depending on the platform and its rules. The article points to creator activity and virtual-world commerce, but does not establish a dependable market or transferable assets across games.
Community or platform work Help operate, support, or develop services and communities around games. Could take the form of employment or other platform-related work; the article does not detail roles or pay. Panelists expressed optimism about companies and platforms creating jobs. The account does not document job security or the number of positions.

What the historical examples show—and do not show

Roblox creators

The GamesBeat article reported that Roblox had 50 million players a month at the time. That is a figure reported in 2018, not a current player count. Roblox chief business officer Craig Donato said, “The top creators can now make enough money that they can form teams.” His comment describes leading creators, not typical creator income or the chance that a new participant will earn money.

League of Legends scholarships

The article said 500 students were going to college on League of Legends scholarships. This is a historical statement in the 2018 account; it does not establish a current total, current scholarship availability, or a standard path into paid gaming work.

Virtual worlds and proposed game economies

The article cited Second Life residents buying and selling goods and presented Philip Rosedale’s view that virtual work in places such as Roblox showed a virtual economy was underway. Jacobs argued that blockchain could let assets move between games; this was his belief, not an established feature of games generally. Related GamesBeat reports described ClanPlay’s marketplace plans for rewarding in-game actions with a token and Forte’s ambitions for blockchain game-economy infrastructure. These period examples do not establish that those services are currently available, successful, or a reliable source of player income. GamesBeat’s 2018 report on ClanPlay.

Can gaming pay your bills?

The panel’s optimism is not evidence that most players can make a living from games. Gio Hunt, Blizzard’s executive vice president and executive producer of platform technology and experiences, said, “There are plenty of people who are approaching games as a job, and that’s an economy.” That is a statement about an emerging set of activities, not a measurement of the number of jobs, typical pay, or stability.

  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.

  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Before treating a gaming pursuit as income, distinguish a possibility from a financial plan. The 2018 article does not establish typical earnings, how often creators or competitors are paid, or the likelihood that a newcomer will earn enough to live on. It also does not establish present-day player counts, scholarship totals, or the operating status of the ventures it mentions.

  • Identify the work: competing, producing content, building a community, or creating virtual goods are different jobs with different requirements.
  • Check the actual payment path: prizes, creator revenue, virtual currency, and sales are not interchangeable. Confirm current platform rules and whether earnings can be withdrawn or used outside the platform.
  • Separate audience from income: an audience may create opportunities, but the article gives no conversion rate from viewers or players to reliable pay.
  • Plan around uncertainty: do not assume that enthusiasm, equipment purchases, or time spent playing will lead to paid work.

What career advice follows from the idea?

For a young person interested in games, the practical lesson is to develop a skill that produces value beyond playing: competitive ability, video production, programming or modding, design, communication, or community work. Treat the game as an industry with varied roles, rather than assuming the only route is to become a professional player. The historical examples show that companies and platforms can create opportunities, but they do not prove that those opportunities are common or secure.
