Apple announced the successor to the third-generation iPhone SE on February 19, 2025, but it was not called the iPhone SE 4. Apple named it the iPhone 16e, priced it from $599 in the U.S., opened preorders on February 21, and began sales on February 28.
The name changed, but the budget question remained: the iPhone 16e was Apple’s least expensive new iPhone, not a low-cost smartphone in the broader market.

iPhone SE 4 launch date: What actually happened
The device widely rumored as the “iPhone SE 4” launched on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Apple introduced it through a Newsroom announcement rather than a conventional keynote event. Earlier reporting connected the date to a teaser from Apple CEO Tim Cook. (Apple; MacRumors)
The important correction is that “iPhone SE 4” was a prelaunch rumor name. The official product name is iPhone 16e. Apple positioned it as a more affordable member of the iPhone 16 family rather than as a continuation of the SE branding.

Apple announced availability in 59 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates. Local pricing, taxes and launch inventory varied by market.
Price and storage options
The iPhone 16e started at $599 in the United States for 128GB. Apple also offered 256GB and 512GB versions at higher prices. The $599 figure was the unlocked starting price before sales tax; it was not necessarily the final amount a buyer paid in every state or country.
For context, the third-generation iPhone SE launched at $429. That made the iPhone 16e $170 more expensive at its entry point—roughly a 40% increase. The difference matters if “budget” means a lower upfront phone bill rather than simply the cheapest new iPhone in Apple’s lineup. (Associated Press)

Carrier advertisements could make the phone appear cheaper or even free, but those offers generally depended on an eligible trade-in, a qualifying plan, installment billing and remaining with the carrier long enough to receive all bill credits. A carrier credit is not the same as a $599 cash discount.
What the iPhone 16e changed from the iPhone SE 3
| Feature | iPhone SE 3 | iPhone 16e |
|---|---|---|
| Launch price | $429 | $599 |
| Display | 4.7-inch LCD | 6.1-inch OLED |
| Authentication | Touch ID and Home button | Face ID |
| Port | Lightning | USB-C |
| Chip | A15 Bionic | A18 |
| Rear camera | Older single-camera system | 48MP 2-in-1 camera system |
| Modem | Qualcomm modem | Apple C1 |
| Apple Intelligence | Not designed for it | Designed to support it |
This was more than a routine processor upgrade. The iPhone 16e replaced the SE’s compact, button-equipped design with a modern 6.1-inch OLED phone featuring Face ID and a notch-style front. It was available in black and white and included an Action button instead of the traditional mute switch.
Confirmed specifications
- A18 chip: the same generation of processor used in the iPhone 16 family, although the 16e remained a lower-tier model.
- Apple C1 modem: Apple’s first in-house cellular modem.
- 48MP camera: a single rear-camera system with computational cropping and zoom capabilities.
- Video: 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 60 frames per second, plus Spatial Audio recording.
- USB-C: replacing the SE 3’s Lightning connector.
- Apple Intelligence: supported on compatible software, languages and regions.
A 48MP specification does not mean the iPhone 16e matched the regular iPhone 16 or Pro models in camera flexibility. The 16e did not provide the same multi-camera setup, including a separate ultrawide camera, so buyers who frequently photograph landscapes, groups or interiors gave up versatility for a lower price.

Apple also promoted improved battery life, but that wording is an Apple marketing claim rather than an independent endurance measurement. Apple Intelligence availability likewise depended on the iOS version, language and country; compatibility did not mean every feature was available immediately or everywhere.

The iPhone 16e shared important technologies with newer iPhones, but Apple reserved some features for more expensive models. The key confirmed trade-off was the simpler single-camera system. Launch-era technical differences also included the lack of MagSafe, so buyers should not assume that all iPhone 16 accessories or charging features worked in the same way.
Depending on the comparison model and price, buyers could also be giving up display brightness, camera options, wireless features and other higher-end refinements. Those differences should be checked against the exact model and current price rather than inferred from the “e” name alone.

Is the iPhone 16e really a budget phone?
It was a budget iPhone, but not necessarily a budget smartphone. At launch, it was Apple’s least expensive new iPhone and offered a modern OLED display, USB-C, an A18 chip and access to Apple’s ecosystem. That makes it a reasonable entry point for someone committed to iOS.
In the wider phone market, however, $599 is not synonymous with “cheap.” Buyers should compare the iPhone 16e with discounted older iPhones, refurbished iPhone 13–15 models, sale-priced standard iPhone 16 units and Android phones in the same price range. Those alternatives may offer more cameras, a lower price or different hardware priorities.
Who should consider it?
- People who want a new iPhone at the lowest price Apple offered at launch.
- Owners of older iPhones who want Face ID, USB-C and a larger OLED display.
- Buyers who value the Apple ecosystem and long-term processor capability.
- Users who want Apple Intelligence compatibility, subject to software and regional availability.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Anyone seeking the lowest-cost smartphone rather than the least expensive new iPhone.
- People who prefer a compact phone, Touch ID or a physical Home button.
- Photography-focused buyers who need an ultrawide camera or broader lens flexibility.
- Shoppers who can find a discounted standard iPhone with more features for a similar price.
- Buyers whose carrier promotion requires a long contract or expensive qualifying plan.
How to evaluate the real cost
When comparing offers, use the phone’s total cost rather than the advertised monthly payment:

- Compare the result with refurbished and discounted alternatives.
Apple’s launch announcement listed potential U.S. trade-in values of up to $120 for an iPhone 11 and up to $170 for an iPhone 12 through Apple Trade In. It also listed larger carrier-dependent figures, including up to $400 for an iPhone 11 and up to $599 for an iPhone 12. These were maximum promotional credits, subject to device condition, carrier, plan and timing—not universal cash values. Check the Apple Trade In page and carrier terms before relying on an offer.
Bottom line
The rumored iPhone SE 4 did arrive on February 19, 2025—but Apple called it the iPhone 16e. It brought the SE line into the modern iPhone design era with a 6.1-inch OLED screen, Face ID, USB-C, an A18 chip, Apple’s C1 modem and a 48MP camera system.
The main financial catch was the price: $599, compared with $429 for the previous SE. That made the iPhone 16e an affordable entry-level iPhone, not an inexpensive phone by the standards of the entire smartphone market.
