On The Numbers’ worldwide chart for performers in leading roles, Zoe Saldaña ranks first, followed by Scarlett Johansson and Chris Pratt. The figures below are the database totals retrieved in 2026; they change as the underlying box-office data is updated. The chart counts the full gross of a qualifying film for every performer it treats as having a leading role, so it measures the box-office footprint of those films—not an actor’s salary or individual share of the revenue.

What the ranking measures—and what it does not
The Numbers defines this list around films in which a performer had a leading role. It includes ensemble films, animated performances and other voice-only roles. When several actors qualify as leading performers in one movie, the chart credits the film’s full box-office gross to each of them; it does not divide the money into individual shares.
That makes the total a way to compare the worldwide box-office footprint of films associated with performers under one database’s rules. It is not a record of what an actor personally earned, a measure of how much any one performer caused audiences to spend, or a measure of a film studio’s profit. Box-office gross is not the same as production revenue after theaters’ shares, distribution costs or production budgets.

Why “highest-grossing actor” lists can disagree
There is no single ranking unless the source defines which roles and receipts count. The Numbers publishes separate records for leading roles, supporting roles, all acting roles, cameos and other categories. Its broader all-role records include voice performances, cameos and minor supporting appearances, so they can yield a different order from the leading-role list.
For a meaningful comparison, check the criteria alongside the names:
Rank #2
- Role threshold: leading roles only, or also supporting appearances, cameos and voice work.
- Counting rule: whether a qualifying film’s full gross is credited to every performer or counted another way.
- Geography: worldwide receipts or domestic-only box office.
- Measurement: nominal dollars, inflation-adjusted grosses or ticket admissions. These answer different questions.
- Snapshot date: databases update as grosses and records change, so totals and positions are not permanent.
Why the totals are not a measure of earnings or audience size
The chart sums nominal box-office dollars from films released across different eras. A dollar total does not tell you how many tickets were sold: ticket prices and the mix of markets change over time. Nor does a larger gross establish greater profitability, since the chart does not subtract budgets or costs, or greater artistic achievement. The Numbers ranking is useful for comparing cumulative worldwide grosses under its stated convention, not for answering those separate questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How quickly the ranking can change
The totals are time-sensitive. A January 2026 Guardian report, citing The Numbers, said Saldaña’s films had passed $15.46 billion worldwide when she became the top-ranked actor. The chart snapshot used here lists her at $15,937,876,222. The difference illustrates why a ranking should be read with its source, role definition and date rather than treated as a permanent record.
