Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates’ divorce was finalized on August 2, 2021. The court did not decide how to divide their property or award spousal support: the couple said they had agreed on asset division, and the final order directed them to follow a private separation contract whose terms were not filed publicly. That helps explain why the case did not require a public financial trial. It does not show that the divorce was emotionally easy, and it does not reveal how much either person received.
Why the divorce did not produce a public property ruling
The couple filed for divorce in May 2021 after 27 years of marriage. At the time, they said they had reached an agreement on dividing their marital assets. Reuters reported that the King County Superior Court finalized the divorce on August 2, 2021, but did not disclose the agreement’s terms or enter judgments for money, property, or spousal support. Instead, the final order directed them to comply with their separation contract, which was not filed with the court. Reuters’ report on the final order describes what the public record did—and did not—decide.
In practical terms, the court’s order is not a public accounting of the couple’s wealth or a ruling that specifies who received which assets. The available reporting supports the narrower conclusion that the couple reached a private arrangement and the court ordered them to follow it.
How much did Melinda French Gates receive in the divorce?
The cited public record does not establish a total or itemized amount. Because the separation contract was not filed and the final order contained no property or support award, a precise figure for French Gates’s divorce settlement cannot be responsibly stated from these sources.

That means the $12.5 billion figure reported later should not be treated as the disclosed value of the 2021 property division. It concerns a separate philanthropic arrangement announced in 2024.
What changed in the Gates Foundation relationship
The original contingency plan
After the divorce, Bill and Melinda Gates initially continued working together at the foundation. In a 2021 interview, foundation CEO Mark Suzman said they expected to keep working together, but had agreed that if either felt unable to do so after two years, French Gates would step down as co-chair and trustee and receive personal resources from Bill for her own philanthropy. Suzman’s foundation interview describes that contingency.

French Gates’s 2024 departure and philanthropic agreement
In May 2024, French Gates resigned as co-chair. The Associated Press reported that she and Bill Gates had reached a $12.5 billion agreement for her future philanthropic work focused on women and families. The foundation said Bill would provide the money personally, rather than drawing it from the foundation’s endowment. The AP report on her resignation and the agreement makes that distinction explicit.
The foundation’s leadership page lists French Gates as co-chair from 2000 to 2024. She continues philanthropy and impact investing through Pivotal, according to the foundation. The foundation’s leadership page records the co-chair dates, while its Pivotal page describes her continuing work.

Personal wealth, philanthropic commitments, and the foundation endowment are different things
Three figures or pools of money are easy to conflate, but they refer to different things:
- The private 2021 separation agreement: Its asset-division terms were not disclosed in the cited court reporting.
- The 2024 $12.5 billion agreement: AP reported this amount for French Gates’s future philanthropy focused on women and families; the foundation said Bill would supply it personally, outside the endowment.
- The foundation’s charitable endowment: The Gates Foundation says its endowment is held by the separate Gates Foundation Trust. Its program work and investment decisions are separated, and Cascade Asset Management Company manages the endowment. The foundation’s financial information and investment-management explanation describe that structure.
The foundation also reports that Bill and Melinda Gates’s combined giving to it totaled US$60.2 billion by the end of 2024. That is a cumulative foundation-giving figure, not their net worth, the value of the endowment, or the amount of the divorce settlement. The foundation’s financial information provides the giving total.
