They help an organization inform, persuade, or remind a target audience about an offer. The right choice depends on the goal, audience, offer, and channels available; businesses often combine the methods rather than rely on just one.
What promotion means
Promotion is the communications element of marketing: the ways an organization shares information about its products, services, or ideas with a target audience. A promotional mix is the combination of methods selected to do that. In Introduction to Business, section 12.5, OpenStax describes the mix as including advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, public relations, social media, and e-commerce. The four methods in this guide are a useful classic framework, not an exhaustive list of modern channels.

What are the four methods of promotion?
| Method | How it communicates | Typical planning role | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advertising | Paid, nonpersonal message from an identified sponsor | Share information or build awareness with an audience | Paid outdoor, broadcast, print, or digital advertisements |
| Sales promotion | Incentive or activity intended to stimulate buying | Encourage a near-term buying response | Coupons, samples, displays, demonstrations, shows, and exhibitions |
| Public relations (PR) | Programs connecting organizational goals with public interest | Seek public understanding and acceptance | Communications and relationship-building programs |
| Personal selling | Direct, individualized communication with a prospective buyer | Explain an offer and respond to questions in a conversation | A salesperson discussing a product with an individual buyer |
Advertising
Advertising is paid, nonpersonal promotion by an identified sponsor. It can present a message to an audience through formats such as outdoor placements, broadcast and printed materials, or digital ads. Unlike personal selling, it is not a one-to-one conversation; unlike sales promotion, it is not defined by a temporary buying incentive. These differences describe the methods, not how effective any particular campaign will be. OpenStax covers advertising formats in Introduction to Business, section 12.5.
Sales promotion
Sales promotion refers to activities designed to stimulate buying, apart from advertising, personal selling, and PR in this framework. Coupons and samples are familiar examples; displays, demonstrations, shows, and exhibitions can also serve this role. It is often used to prompt a short-term response, but an incentive does not by itself establish that sales will be profitable or that customers will remain loyal. See OpenStax’s overview of the promotion mix.

Public relations (PR)
PR is a communications and relationship function that links an organization’s goals with public interest and seeks public understanding and acceptance. That is broader than buying an advertisement placement: PR concerns how an organization communicates and relates to its publics. It should not be reduced to earned media; PR does not guarantee coverage, and the method is not defined by every activity being unpaid. OpenStax explains the role in Principles of Marketing, section 13.1.
Personal selling
Personal selling is direct, individualized communication between a seller and a prospective buyer. The seller can explain an offer in response to the buyer’s questions, making a conversation useful when a product is complex, customizable, or relatively high-priced. That is a potential fit, not a universal rule about results or costs. OpenStax discusses personal selling in Principles of Marketing, section 13.1.

How to choose a promotion method
Start with the communication task rather than assuming one method is always best. The distinctions below are planning guides: each method may contribute to more than one goal, and no single method guarantees a particular outcome.
- For a paid message to a broad audience: consider advertising when the offer can be communicated without an individual sales conversation.
- For a near-term buying prompt: consider a sales promotion such as a coupon, sample, or demonstration, while assessing whether the incentive supports the organization’s goals.
- For public understanding and acceptance: consider PR programs that connect organizational aims with public interest.
- For individualized explanation: consider personal selling when prospective buyers may need answers or a tailored conversation about the offer.
Then check whether the method fits the target audience, the offer, and the channels the organization can use. Many plans combine methods so that a buyer may encounter an advertisement, receive an explanation from a salesperson, or see an incentive without receiving contradictory claims.

Why promotion methods need coordination
Integrated marketing communications (IMC) means coordinating promotional activities to create a consistent, unified, customer-focused message. OpenStax describes this approach in Introduction to Business, section 12.5. A product’s central promise should remain coherent across an advertisement, a salesperson’s explanation, a blog or social post, a coupon, or other communications. The channels can do different jobs, but they should not leave the audience with conflicting descriptions of the offer.
The four methods are therefore best understood as complementary tools, not exclusive alternatives. Social media, e-commerce, and other delivery channels may also appear in a contemporary promotional mix; they expand how promotion reaches people without changing the basic distinction among advertising, sales promotion, PR, and personal selling.
