The Evolution of Bitcoin: A History of the Network and BTC

Bitcoin began as a proposal for electronic payments between people without a financial institution processing each transfer. Its network launched in 2009 and has since evolved through open-source development, participant-led decisions, a major fork, scheduled changes to new-coin issuance and new investment products. Those developments are related, but they are not the same: Bitcoin is the network, bitcoin (BTC) is its native asset, and access to BTC as an investment does not mean it is widely used to pay for everyday goods.

What is the history of Bitcoin?

Bitcoin’s history is the story of a payment-system proposal becoming a public network whose rules are maintained through software and participation rather than a central operator. Its original purpose is clearest in the white paper, Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, published in 2008 under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Nakamoto wrote: “Commerce on the Internet has come to rely almost exclusively on financial institutions serving as trusted third parties to process electronic payments.” The paper proposed a way for parties to send payments directly to one another.

The name Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudonym. The cited primary and institutional sources do not establish the creator’s real-world identity, so claims that identify a particular person or group go beyond what they establish.

When did Bitcoin start?

The white paper appeared in 2008; Bitcoin’s protocol software and network followed in 2009. That distinction matters: the paper set out the design, while the software made it possible for participants to run the system. Bitcoin refers to the network and protocol; bitcoin, commonly abbreviated BTC, is the digital asset transferred and issued under those rules.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How does the Bitcoin network work?

Bitcoin records transfers in blocks linked to earlier blocks, forming a public transaction history. Miners use computational work to propose blocks, and the protocol rewards successful block production with newly issued bitcoin according to its issuance schedule. Wallet software manages cryptographic keys: control of the private key associated with funds allows a user to authorize a transfer.

A public address is not, by itself, a verified real-world identity. But transactions and addresses are publicly inspectable, so activity may be analyzed and connected to people using outside information. Bitcoin is therefore better described as pseudonymous than anonymous.

Who controls Bitcoin, and how does it change?

Bitcoin’s software is open source. Developers can propose changes, but writing or publishing a change does not make it binding on the network: participants decide which software and rules to run. No company, developer, or single authority can unilaterally make a change effective for every participant.

That process can preserve different choices rather than produce one universal upgrade. If participants adopt incompatible software rules, the network can split into separate networks. This is an important part of Bitcoin’s history: technical disagreements can have lasting consequences for which asset and network people use.

What happened when Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin?

On August 1, 2017, incompatible changes adopted by a group of participants resulted in a fork and the creation of the Bitcoin Cash network and asset. Bitcoin Cash is not a renamed version of BTC or simply an update that every Bitcoin participant adopted. It is a separate network with a separate asset. The split illustrates how participant-led governance can leave competing versions in operation when agreement on rules is not reached.

How does Bitcoin’s issuance schedule work?

Bitcoin’s protocol reduces the block reward by half every 210,000 blocks. In an iShares Bitcoin Trust filing published in 2026, reporting data through December 31, 2025, the reward was 3.125 BTC per block and approximately 19.9 million BTC had been mined by that reporting date. The filing describes a stated maximum supply of 21 million BTC. It estimates the next halving around mid-2028 and the supply limit around 2140; those are schedule estimates, not market forecasts.

The halving changes how many new BTC are issued as block rewards. It does not set BTC’s market price or guarantee a particular price movement.

What changed in 2024: investment access, not the Bitcoin protocol?

On January 10, 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved rule changes permitting the listing and trading of shares in a number of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). SEC Chair Gary Gensler said: “The Commission approved the listing and trading of a number of spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) shares today.” He also made clear that the action was not an endorsement of bitcoin.

These products created a regulated U.S. investment route to exposure to bitcoin. They did not change Bitcoin’s protocol, establish that BTC is safe, or demonstrate that consumers commonly use it to pay for goods and services. Buying an ETP share is also distinct from holding BTC directly: the product provides investment exposure, while direct control of BTC depends on control of the relevant private keys.

Has Bitcoin become everyday money?

Bitcoin can be used for peer-to-peer transfers, and some merchants accept it. However, the iShares Bitcoin Trust filing for the year ended December 31, 2025, says bitcoin “has not yet been widely adopted as an accepted form of payment for most goods and services.” That assessment is distinct from the growth of trading or investment products. The cited sources do not establish a robust current global statistic for everyday payment adoption.

What should someone understand before using or holding BTC?

  • Price risk: BTC’s market value can fluctuate substantially; ownership does not guarantee purchasing power or a return. Bitcoin.org, a project information site, warns that owners can unpredictably gain or lose money.
  • Privacy: The public transaction record can reveal patterns, and address activity may be linked to identities through outside information. A public address is not automatically a person’s name, but Bitcoin transactions are not private in the same way as cash.
  • Keys and custody: With direct key control, the holder can authorize transfers, but losing the keys can mean losing access. If BTC is held through an exchange or custodian, the provider controls the keys and the customer’s records may reflect a claim on the provider rather than an on-chain balance controlled by the customer. These arrangements differ in control and recovery.
  • Transfer mistakes: The Federal Register describes direct on-chain transfers as generally irreversible once sent. A mistaken address or lost key can therefore have serious consequences.
  • Local rules: Legal and tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and can change. Bitcoin.org notes that legal status varies; a general account of Bitcoin’s history is not a substitute for checking applicable local rules.
