Buying a watch online means checking two things separately: whether the watch fits how you want to wear and maintain it, and whether the seller’s terms make the purchase acceptable. Compare the exact model and condition, the full price, warranty, delivery, returns, and payment protections before you place the order.
Choose a watch that fits your ownership preferences
Start with how the watch runs and what routine it requires. The Federal Trade Commission’s watch-buying advice distinguishes between a battery-powered watch and one that must be wound daily. That is a useful preference question, not a ranking: neither option is right for everyone. Decide which routine suits you, then check the current manufacturer specifications for the exact model you are considering.
- Movement and routine: Identify whether the watch is battery-powered or requires daily winding, and make sure that matches your preference.
- Model-specific details: Confirm the model number and specifications on the manufacturer’s current product information. Do not assume a listing’s photos or general description cover every variant.
- Water resistance: Treat broad claims such as “waterproof” cautiously. Historical FTC guidance discusses misleading watch claims, but it does not establish current ratings or care instructions for a particular watch. Check the exact model’s current manufacturer specifications and instructions.
The FTC’s watch-buying advice also recommends asking whether a warranty is included, how long it lasts, what parts and repair problems it covers, and how and where the watch can be serviced.
Check the listing and the seller before comparing prices
Verify the exact item and its condition
Read the full description, including fine print, and confirm that the model number, condition, included accessories, and any stated defects match what you intend to buy. For a used or otherwise non-new watch, ask for clear photos of the actual item when possible rather than relying only on stock images. Keep important answers in writing. Photos and marketplace badges can help you evaluate a listing, but they do not prove authenticity.

Assess the seller, not just the star rating
Review ratings and recent buyer comments across available sources, but do not treat a high average score as a guarantee. Look for seller contact information and understand who will handle a problem: the seller, the marketplace, or both. Marketplace protections differ; check the rules for the particular item and seller before relying on them. The FTC’s marketplace guidance outlines these checks.
A very low price for an expensive brand-name watch is a warning sign, not proof that the item is counterfeit or stolen. Compare the listing with other offers and ask the seller questions you can verify. The FTC cautions that a low price on an expensive item might indicate a fake; it does not provide a universal online authentication test. If authenticity is central to your decision, consult the brand’s current guidance or seek an inspection from a qualified professional.

Compare the full cost
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the displayed watch price. Include shipping, handling, taxes, and any other fees. Check the final checkout total before paying; a low item price can be offset by added costs or less favorable return terms. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends reading the full description and fine print as well as accounting for the total cost.
Read the warranty and service terms for this watch
Find the written warranty before purchase and read the terms for the exact watch and seller. Do not assume that a manufacturer’s warranty applies to every seller, or that a seller warranty and manufacturer warranty offer the same coverage. Look for the duration, covered parts and repair problems, exclusions, claim process, and where service is available.

In the United States, the FTC says written warranties for consumer products costing more than $15 must be available before purchase. Its warranty guide explains how sellers and warrantors can make warranty terms available, including online. Availability of terms does not mean every watch has the same warranty or that every repair is covered.
Confirm delivery, returns, and refunds
Check the promised shipping time and delivery method before ordering. Under FTC guidance, a seller must ship as promised; if no shipping time is stated, the seller generally must ship within 30 days. This is a shipping rule, not a guarantee that a package will arrive by a particular date. Review the seller’s stated estimate and any tracking or delivery conditions.

Before paying, locate the return policy and identify:
- How long you have to request a return and when that period starts.
- Who pays return shipping and whether the watch must be returned in its original condition or packaging.
- Whether a restocking fee applies and how refunds are issued.
- Whether sale or clearance items have different terms.
- How marketplace rules interact with the seller’s own policy.
These details matter especially if the watch arrives late, differs from its description, or does not suit you. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance advises buyers to check return shipping, the return period, and restocking fees before ordering.

Pay in a way that preserves recourse
Prefer a credit card or a payment system with buyer protections, and keep the transaction on the marketplace if leaving it would remove those protections. Be wary if a seller insists on gift cards, a wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. Save the listing, seller messages, order confirmation, receipt, and delivery information so you have a record of what was promised and paid.
Online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the FTC in 2022, according to its 2023 consumer alert. That statistic covers FTC scam reports generally; it is not a watch-specific fraud rate and does not estimate the odds that a particular watch listing is fraudulent. The FTC’s online-shopping alert explains steps to take when an order goes wrong.
What to do if the watch does not arrive or is wrong
- Preserve the evidence. Keep the listing, photos, messages, order confirmation, receipt, and any tracking details.
- Contact the seller promptly. Describe the problem clearly and ask for a remedy in writing.
- Use the marketplace process if applicable. Check the specific item’s protection rules and follow the stated dispute steps and deadlines.
- Contact your card issuer about a dispute. If you paid by card and the order does not arrive or is materially different from the listing, ask the issuer about disputing the charge.
FTC guidance recommends contacting the seller or marketplace promptly when an order does not arrive or is wrong. Which remedy is available depends on the payment method, marketplace rules, and the facts of the transaction.
