A degree is usually not required, but the job is physically demanding and can expose workers to serious hazards. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $47,120 for construction laborers; local pay, duties, training and safety requirements vary by employer, project and location.
What does a construction laborer do?
Laborers help keep construction work moving through site preparation, material handling, cleanup and support for craft workers. The exact mix changes with the project and its phase: a worker on a road crew may do different tasks from one on a building site.
- Prepare and clean work areas, remove debris and help clear hazards.
- Load, unload and move building materials and equipment.
- Dig trenches, backfill holes and compact soil.
- Build or dismantle bracing, scaffolding and other temporary structures as assigned.
- Use hand and power tools, and assist electricians, plumbers, masons, carpenters and other tradesworkers.
Some road and infrastructure crews also use pavement breakers, jackhammers, earth tampers or surveying equipment, and may develop traffic-control skills. Specialized work such as handling explosives or operating hydraulic boring equipment requires additional training. A general laborer is not necessarily the same as a helper assigned to one craft: BLS groups laborers and helpers in some wage and outlook statistics, but the roles can differ.
How to become a construction laborer
A formal degree is usually not the entry gate. Some employers prefer a high school diploma or equivalent, and math or career-and-technical classes can help with measuring and construction tasks. In BLS’s 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey, 82.0% of construction laborers had no minimum education requirement, 11.4% required prior experience, and 84.2% required on-the-job training. Those national survey figures describe the occupation, not a guarantee that a particular employer will hire without credentials.

Learn on the job or through an apprenticeship
Many new laborers learn by shadowing experienced workers and doing tasks under guidance. Apprenticeships sponsored by unions or trade associations can combine paid work with technical instruction. Availability, eligibility, duration and any costs depend on the specific program and location; check directly with a local union, trade association or training provider.
Check the employer’s entry requirements
Employers may require a driver’s license, safety training or credentials for particular tasks. Rigging or scaffolding certifications, for example, can support progression when relevant to the work. Requirements vary, so ask what documentation, training and equipment are expected before accepting a position. Do not assume that one general safety course authorizes every job or task.
Build practical skills
Communication and teamwork matter on a coordinated jobsite. Basic math helps with measuring; mechanical ability is useful around tools and equipment. Physical stamina and strength are important, but the work also calls for attention to instructions, hazards and changing site conditions.
What the work demands day to day
Construction labor is physical. Tasks can involve lifting and carrying heavy materials, standing for long periods, reaching, crouching, kneeling and working in low postures. The BLS 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey estimates construction laborers spent 89.2% of the workday standing, on average.

Work is often outdoors and may take place in varied weather, at heights or in confined spaces. Many positions are full time, but schedules differ. Highway and bridge work can require night shifts, while weather can make work seasonal in some regions. Consider the commute, schedule and physical demands alongside the posted pay when evaluating a job.
Construction safety: hazards, training and PPE
Construction work carries real risks. BLS says laborers have one of the highest injury and illness rates among occupations; common scenarios include slips, falls and contact with objects or equipment. OSHA identifies hazards including falls, unguarded machinery, heavy equipment, electrocution, silica dust and asbestos. The controls and training needed depend on the task and site.
Follow site controls, not just a gear checklist
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is one part of a hazard-based safety program, not a substitute for controlling hazards. OSHA’s construction PPE rule requiring properly fitting equipment took effect January 13, 2025. Where PPE is required, OSHA says workers must be trained on when it is needed, what type is necessary, how to wear and adjust it, its limitations and its care. The employer and jobsite determine the specific equipment. Ask for instruction and follow site rules rather than assuming a generic gear list is enough.

Take falls and excavation hazards seriously
Falls can result from unprotected sides and openings, improperly built scaffolds, protruding rebar or ladder misuse. For excavations, OSHA states: “The primary hazard of trenching and excavation work is employee injury from a cave-in.” Protection depends on soil and site conditions, and safe work also involves access and exit, underground utilities, water accumulation, hazardous atmospheres, equipment, falling loads and nearby traffic. A competent person should inspect excavations as required. Follow the site’s direction, report changing conditions and never treat a simplified depth rule as permission to enter a trench.
Plan for heat exposure
OSHA recommends reducing heat exposure through work practices or engineering controls. Measures can include scheduling work during cooler periods, reducing unnecessary exertion, providing water, using buddy systems and planning for emergencies. Protective gear alone is not a heat plan; follow the employer’s procedures and report signs of heat illness.

Industry and occupation subtype affect pay; so do local labor markets and the job’s schedule and conditions. For a location-specific estimate, use BLS state and area wage data and compare it with the actual job offer. Confirm whether quoted compensation is hourly or annual, what hours are expected, and how overtime and benefits are handled.
What is the job outlook for construction laborers?
BLS projects employment for construction laborers and helpers to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3% growth projected for all occupations. It projects about 137,000 openings per year on average for the combined laborer-and-helper group over that period. Many openings are expected because workers transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force, including through retirement; the number is not a promise of openings in every location. BLS links demand for laborers to construction activity and infrastructure repair or replacement.

Experience can lead to more specialized work, site oversight or supervision. Some workers become self-employed. Helpers may move toward a skilled trade after gaining experience and completing the required training or credentials; BLS gives an electrician’s helper entering an electrician apprenticeship as one example. The route depends on the trade, employer and local requirements.
If you are comparing construction careers, weigh the daily tasks and opportunities to specialize, required credentials and training, physical demands and hazards, local wages, schedule and seasonality, and likely advancement route. National median pay alone cannot tell you which job is the better fit for your circumstances.
