The Data Science Interview Book by Dip Ranjan Chatterjee is a free online resource for reviewing data science interview topics. Its own About page makes the limit clear: it is a revision aid for readers who already know the material, not a comprehensive textbook. Use it to organize and refresh your preparation, then study deeper sources and practise solving problems when you need more than a refresher.
What is The Data Science Interview Book?
It is a web-based book intended to help readers review material for data science interviews. The project describes the online version as free and a work in progress, with additions and updates planned monthly. Its guidance is direct: “In short, don’t use this as textbook, use it as a revision note.” Read the book’s About page.
That distinction matters if you are starting from scratch. A short review resource can help you recall definitions, frameworks, and common approaches, but it should not be treated as proof that you can explain a concept, write code, or solve an unfamiliar problem under interview conditions.
What subjects does it cover?
A February 8, 2024 KDnuggets introduction describes the book as covering statistics, model building, machine-learning algorithms, Python, SQL, analytical thinking, and quick-reference cheatsheets. Its reported topic examples include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems#1 Best Overall
- Statistics: probability, distributions, the central limit theorem, Bayesian and frequentist reasoning, hypothesis testing, and A/B testing.
- Modeling and machine learning: preprocessing, model selection, hyperparameter optimization, regression, classification, clustering, tree models, ensembles, time series, and anomaly detection.
- Technical skills: Python fundamentals and coding questions, plus SQL topics such as joins and window functions.
- Analytical thinking: business scenarios and questions that ask you to reason from a practical problem.
- Cheatsheets: quick references for NumPy, Pandas, SQL, statistics, regular expressions, Git, Power BI, Python, Keras, and R.
KDnuggets also says the book includes questions from companies such as Google, DoorDash, and Airbnb. That is the article’s description; it does not independently verify the provenance or current relevance of every question. See KDnuggets’ February 8, 2024 introduction for its overview.
How to use it in interview preparation
- Check the section’s current state. KDnuggets notes that a warning symbol marks sections that are unfinished and subject to change. Treat those pages as evolving material, not a complete reference.
- Use it to find and refresh topics. Work through the areas relevant to the role you want, and note concepts you cannot explain clearly without looking them up.
- Verify gaps with deeper instruction. If a topic is unfamiliar, confusing, or important to the role, use a fuller textbook, course, documentation, or other substantial learning resource rather than relying on a revision note.
- Practise applying the knowledge. For each reviewed concept, try explaining it aloud, writing the relevant code or SQL, or working through a new problem. Recognition while reading is not the same as being able to produce a sound answer.
Free online review or a paid print practice book?
Ace the Data Science Interview is a separate title, not another name for the free online book. Its official site describes a print book with worked interview questions. The choice depends on whether you need broad review or a structured set of solved problems.
| Resource | Cost and format | Emphasis | Depth and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Data Science Interview Book | Free web-based book, according to its About page | Broad topic review across statistics, modeling, machine learning, Python, SQL, analytical thinking, and reference sheets, as described by KDnuggets | The project calls it a revision note and work in progress; some sections may be unfinished or change |
| Ace the Data Science Interview | Paid print title; its official site says there is no ebook, Kindle version, or PDF download | Practice through 201 questions with full solutions, across 11 chapters | The official site lists 301 pages; it is a distinct companion option for readers seeking worked questions |
The print-book details come from the official Ace the Data Science Interview site. It also says that some questions can be solved on DataLemur, but the information here does not establish any referral or affiliate arrangement. Neither resource’s description establishes that using it will secure an interview or job.
