Your state, ZIP code, age, vehicle, driving record, coverage limits, deductibles, mileage and—in states where it is allowed—credit-based insurance score can change the result substantially.
For a useful national starting point, CarInsurance.com’s 2026 comparison names Travelers as the cheapest option for its sample full-coverage policy, at an average of $1,962 per year. GEICO is cheapest in the same study for state-minimum coverage, at $635 per year, and liability-only coverage, at $781 per year. Military-eligible drivers may find the lowest rate with USAA, which averaged $1,628 per year for full coverage.
Those are comparison averages—not quotes. The only reliable way to find your cheapest policy is to compare insurers using the same driver information and identical coverage.

| Driver or coverage profile | Cheapest reported insurer | Average annual rate | Average monthly rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| State-minimum coverage | GEICO | $635 | $53 |
| Liability-only coverage | GEICO | $781 | $65 |
| Full coverage | Travelers | $1,962 | $164 |
| Military-eligible driver with full coverage | USAA | $1,628 | $136 |

| One at-fault accident, full coverage | Travelers | $2,260 | Not reported in the comparison |
| One DUI, full coverage | Travelers | $2,845 | Not reported in the comparison |
The speeding-ticket, accident and DUI figures come from NerdWallet’s 2026 research and use a different sample and methodology. NerdWallet’s table lists Travelers at $2,118 per year after one speeding ticket, $2,260 after one at-fault accident and $2,845 after a DUI. The speeding-ticket figure therefore should not be merged with CarInsurance.com’s $2,801 figure as though the two studies measured identical drivers.
USAA is available only to eligible military members, veterans and their immediate families. Travelers is the cheapest full-coverage insurer in this particular national dataset, not a universal winner.

These figures illustrate why “GEICO is the cheapest” is an incomplete claim. GEICO leads the state-minimum and liability-only columns, while Travelers leads the full-coverage column. A local or regional carrier may beat both in your state.

Why different 2026 studies name different winners
Published rankings are useful for creating a shortlist, but they are not a price list. Insurers and comparison publishers use different:
- Driver ages, driving records and vehicle assumptions
- Coverage limits and deductibles
- Quote samples and collection dates
- Carrier groups and geographic markets
- Definitions of minimum, liability-only and full coverage
For example, Experian’s June 2026 marketplace data names Lemonade as the least expensive source for minimum coverage, at $1,277 per year, and Travelers as the least expensive for full coverage, at $1,799 per year. Experian’s averages were $1,572 for minimum coverage and $2,924 for full coverage. Its figures came from quotes generated through an automotive insurance marketplace, not necessarily issued policy premiums.
That is not automatically a contradiction of CarInsurance.com’s GEICO minimum-coverage result. It is a different marketplace, carrier set, quote sample and methodology. Always label a rate by its source and assumptions instead of combining rankings into one definitive list.
Cheapest car insurance by state
Where you live can matter more than a national ranking. Insurance.com’s 2026 analysis identifies these among the five least expensive states overall:
| State | Average full coverage | Average liability-only | Average state minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vermont | $1,660 | $435 | $392 |
| New Hampshire | $1,689 | $608 | $567 |
| Hawaii | $1,757 | $549 | $477 |
| Ohio | $1,783 | $513 | $475 |
| Maine | Among the five cheapest states | See state table | See state table |
Insurance.com attributes state-level differences to factors such as population density, weather, vehicle theft, uninsured-driver rates and state rating rules. Its full-coverage comparison uses 100/300/100 liability limits and $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles.
Company winners also vary by state. Forbes Advisor’s 2026 full-coverage table lists examples including:

NerdWallet sometimes identifies different state winners, such as American National in Colorado, Donegal in Delaware and Georgia, GEICO in Florida, and Travelers in Connecticut. Regional insurers—including Erie in the states where it operates—can be especially competitive. Compare national and regional companies rather than assuming the largest carrier will be cheapest.
Minimum coverage versus full coverage
Minimum coverage generally means the liability insurance required by state law. It pays for injuries or property damage you cause to other people, up to your policy limits. It normally does not pay to repair your own vehicle after a crash, theft, hail damage or vandalism.
Liability-only coverage is a comparison term that may use higher liability limits than the legal minimum. It still generally excludes collision and comprehensive protection for your own car.
Full coverage is not a standardized legal policy. Comparison sites usually use the phrase for liability insurance combined with:
- Collision coverage: damage to your vehicle from a collision.
- Comprehensive coverage: noncollision losses such as theft, vandalism, hail and falling objects.
A lender or leasing company commonly requires collision and comprehensive coverage on a financed or leased vehicle. That requirement usually comes from the loan or lease contract, not from state law.
A cheaper minimum-liability quote is therefore not a cheaper substitute for a full-coverage quote. It provides substantially less protection.

What determines your personal rate?
Insurers use their own underwriting models, so the same driver can receive very different quotes. Common rating factors include:
- State, city and ZIP code
- Age and driving experience
- Vehicle make, model, age and repair costs
- Annual mileage and whether the car is used for commuting or business
- Tickets, accidents and claims
- Liability limits and deductibles
- Credit-based insurance score, where state law permits its use
- Telematics or usage-based-insurance data
A credit-based insurance score is not the same as a standard consumer credit score. The NAIC says many insurers use these insurance-risk scores where permitted, and FICO estimates that approximately 95% of auto insurers use them in states that allow the practice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsage-based insurance may measure mileage, driving time, location, rapid acceleration, hard braking and hard cornering through an app, device or built-in vehicle system. It can reduce premiums for some low-mileage or safer drivers, but read the program’s tracking rules and understand whether poor driving data can increase your price.
How to find your cheapest policy
- Decide on coverage first. Choose liability limits, uninsured/underinsured-motorist limits, medical coverage, collision and comprehensive deductibles, rental reimbursement and roadside assistance before requesting quotes.
- Use identical information. Enter the same address, drivers, vehicles, annual mileage, claims and coverage selections with every insurer. The NAIC warns that incorrect application details and mismatched coverage can make quote comparisons misleading.
- Compare at least three companies. CarInsurance.com recommends getting at least three quotes. The difference between insurers can exceed $500 annually even for minimum-liability coverage.
- Include regional carriers. A state-specific insurer can be cheaper than the companies appearing in national rankings.
- Check discounts separately. Ask whether the quote includes bundling, multi-vehicle, safe-driver, defensive-driving, good-student, paid-in-full or telematics discounts.
- Compare the declarations pages. Before switching, check the final premium, limits, deductibles, exclusions, covered drivers, vehicle information and effective date.
- Confirm licensing. Use your state insurance department to verify that the insurer and agent are licensed to sell coverage in your state.
Common mistakes when comparing cheap car insurance
Choosing the lowest legal limit automatically
State minimums can leave you responsible for damage above your policy limits and generally do not protect your own vehicle. A slightly higher liability limit may provide a better balance between price and financial protection.
Calling “full coverage” a guaranteed package
Full coverage can mean different things in different comparisons. Check whether the quote includes collision, comprehensive, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and uninsured-motorist coverage.
Comparing monthly payments instead of total cost
A monthly payment may include installment fees. Compare the six-month or 12-month policy total, then check whether paying in full changes the price.

Copying a published average as a personal estimate
National averages describe assumed drivers. They do not account for your ZIP code, vehicle, record or insurer-specific eligibility. Also check units carefully: NerdWallet’s 2026 page contains apparent annual/monthly label reversals in some prose, while its accompanying table gives the intended figures.
Canceling before the new policy starts
Do not end the old policy until the replacement coverage is bound and you have confirmed its effective date. A lapse can create legal and financial problems and may increase future premiums.
For comparison guidance, the NAIC consumer auto-insurance guide and its auto-insurance comparison worksheet provide useful checklists.
FAQ
What is the cheapest car insurance company in 2026?
It depends on the driver and coverage. In CarInsurance.com’s national averages, GEICO is cheapest for state-minimum and liability-only coverage, while Travelers is cheapest for full coverage. USAA has the lowest full-coverage average for eligible military members, veterans and immediate family members.
Is GEICO still the cheapest car insurance?
GEICO is the cheapest in one 2026 national comparison for state-minimum and liability-only coverage, but not for full coverage. Travelers leads that comparison for full coverage, and regional insurers or other companies may be cheaper in your state.
How can I get the cheapest car insurance quote?
Compare at least three national and regional insurers using the same drivers, vehicles, liability limits, deductibles and optional coverages. Then check discounts, usage-based insurance, the final declarations page and the insurer’s licensing before switching.
Is minimum car insurance enough?
Minimum coverage may satisfy state law, but it generally pays only for liability claims against you and not repairs to your own vehicle. It can also leave you personally responsible for costs above the policy limits, so it is not the same as full protection.
The Bottom Line
For 2026 national averages, start with GEICO for minimum or liability-only coverage, Travelers for full coverage, and USAA if you qualify. Treat those results as shortlists, not promises. Request comparable quotes from at least three insurers—including regional carriers—because your state, ZIP code, vehicle and driving history may make a different company the cheapest.
